Dreams that can never be made a reality

Does anyone else have this, where they really want something but for practical reasons it just wont happen

Mine at the moment is owning a horse. I know fuck all about horses, but I really really really want one.

To put this into perspective I live in a second floor flat and the horse would have to live on the balcony (which shows how little I know about horses)

I have other dreams like going to Disney World and while it will be tough its not impossible but owning a horse is,

My mum bought a horse when she retired. He lived on a livery farm and brought her great joy!

Pinkarsedfly · 26/06/2019 04:27

Spending the entire winter at the Four Seasons Punta Mita resort in Mexico.

Walking away from EVERYONE and starting again from scratch completely on my own in a tiny cottage by the sea. I only get this desire occasionally, but when I do the pull is strong and the fantasy becomes very detailed.

@PeachPotato I have no idea what one of these are

He lived on a livery farm

I have this alot, I have a very very rich friend and in my dreams they will buy me my house in Scotland. In reality they are not rich, just made a shit ton of sacrifices to now own their own home morgage free, but to me that is being fucking rich

Build my own house and live on my own.
Not going to happen, Lotto win excepted. But nice to dream.I spend some times in my head designing this house.

Mine is a mansion with an indoor swimming pool and a helicopter pad, due to my new obbession with horses, I have had to add a stable and a new house for someone to look after them

Another one is to live in a fantastic apartment in Greenwich Village, NYC, or in a brownstone.

I’d raise the necessary funds by writing a blockbusting bestseller and selling the film rights.

I sometimes dream that I live in NYC. It feels meant to be Wink

Pipandmum · 26/06/2019 08:15

Goes along with kids being told ‘if you work hard enough you can achieve anything’. Even my 14 year old knows that’s not true!
I dream of building my own house too (guess that’s why all those tv programs are so popular). But actually I’d really love a huge penthouse with huge terrace in Chelsea on one hand or a lovely little house (with lovely little garden) also in Chelsea. Just short of about £5m or so.

VenusClapTrap · 26/06/2019 08:40

I want to marry Morten Harket. But I’m married, he’s married, and he would have to still have the face and body he had in 1985.

I also fear he’s actually a bit of a knob in real life, sadly, and not the person he is in my head.

Fortheloveofscience · 26/06/2019 08:46

See I wouldn’t put “building your own house” and “owning a horse” into the same category. Plenty of very normal people have horses, it’s a minority that keep them on their own land. There are commercial setups called ‘livery yards’ where you rent out a stable, space in a field and somewhere to keep your stuff. How much you pay depends on how naice the place is you choose, but it doesn’t have to break the bank.

You’d need to learn how to look after one and how to ride (if this is something that interests you) but if it genuinely is a life goal and you’d be willing to reduce spend on other things to free up some cash then there are plenty of adult beginners around.

Ferfeckssake · 26/06/2019 09:42

pinkarsedarsedfly I actually did live in NYC in a brownstone in the 80s. ! If I wanted to live in it now , I would have to have at least $6,000,000.Shock

BiscuitDrama · 26/06/2019 09:44

I don’t think he is a knob, Venus , just a bit shy.

(May have thought about this a bit much.)

Pinkarsedfly · 26/06/2019 10:37

Ferfecksake was it as cool as I imagine?

avalanching · 26/06/2019 10:44

I don't think that's a dream that can't have reality? To me a dream that doesn't have reality is something like wishing someone was alive or not having a certain condition etc. Your dream could absolutely come true, with time. I'm one of those insufferable people who think if you want something you go out and attain it, come up with a financial plan, earn more money, rent land elsewhere, buy a different property, or start with riding lessons etc etc. Yours is a totally attainable dream if you put your mind to it, wouldn't happen over night but you can work towards it. I know lots of people who have horses but not in their gardens! My parents rent some cheap land elsewhere, it's quite a commitment though.

Bedsidedrawer · 26/06/2019 10:45

I think the problem is that our generation were raised to dream unrealistic dreams and that we could have anything/change the world. I see so much depression and disappointment and mid-life crisis now because those expectations aren't fulfilled. It's why people fall into infidelity, drinking too much etc
Firstly anyone who has achieved these so called dreams - riches, fame, talent etc has made massive sacrifices elsewhere in their lives.
Secondly I think it's okay to be good enough and have mediocre dreams.
My only dream was to have a successful family after a shit childhood. I've achieved that and I'm happy.

MephistophelesApprentice · 26/06/2019 10:55

There's a man I know who retired from our office. He and his wife have worked in educational administration roles all their lives, never manager level, always frontline. They own a small, but delightful cottage in a very pretty part of a particularly green and leafy suburb. I've seen pictures of his cosy house and small but lovely garden. I was talking to him about what he's going to do after working and he talked about growing marrows in his allotment, sitting in the garden with his wife with a book and a bottle of wine, doing the same around a stove in winter, going on sailing holidays around the Aegean sea.

Personally I'd do things a little differently. I'd want something more herbal than wine, more fungal than marrows and I'd rather do driving holidays in the US than sailing. But whenever I think about it I want to cry; They can do all these things because they've chosen to be childfree, but my partner wants a child and I've a promise to keep. So I'll be lucky to see a retirement flat in a shitty part of town; Lucky if I still have a partner; Lucky if I get to own a car.

IhaveALooBrush · 26/06/2019 11:01

I'm not going to win Strictly because I'm not famous and I never will be.

I guess writing a bestselling series of novels that get turned into films and make me a bundle it is then.

EssentialHummus · 26/06/2019 11:08

To put this into perspective I live in a second floor flat and the horse would have to live on the balcony

I have such a strong mental picture of this and am now giggling into my coffee imagining this horse OP Grin.

I think if this stays a dream long(ish) term you can find a way to make it/a version of it happen.

EssentialHummus · 26/06/2019 11:09

(Not on your balcony though)

Sobeyondthehills · 26/06/2019 12:20

Its been a dream on and off for a good 30 years, but I love the idea of owning a horse, just not the reality, I don't have the passion for it, just a love for the idea.

Although the horse would be fine on my balcony, he would have to fight for space with the cat, but other than that he would be fine

I used to want to be a famous flamenco dancer 💃🏻

Squirrel26 · 26/06/2019 12:32

I shared a flat in London with a friend for about 5 years when we were younger. Every few weeks I would ask her if I could have a pony and she always said ‘no’. Spoilsport.

Now we don’t live together any more but we both live in the country. She has room for a pony but still refuses to have one. I don’t have room, but I do have a pony on loan who lives down the road. If you really want it, it’s just a matter of time. Grin

Anerak · 26/06/2019 12:35

Being a ballet dancer. Stopped dancing properly when I was 15 so cannot possibly happen the way I imagine it. Still fun escapism

amusedbush · 26/06/2019 13:04

I want to be so rich I can just split my time between London, Paris and New York doing Cool Things.

Alas I'm on £25k and live in the east end of Glasgow.

SilverNewMoon · 26/06/2019 13:09

I would love to have one of those beautiful country houses, but it will never happen without winning the lottery
