I’ve decided to start listening to podcasts as I work, drive, walk the dog etc. and saw a thread yesterday about some true crime ones - Casefile, They Walk among us, and others.
Those look good, but I’d like some more recommendations, too.
I’m interested in... anything really: history, science, nature, current affairs, comedy, mysteries, crime, scary stuff.

Which podcasts do you like?
Thanks 🙂

I like Answer Me This.

AnnaNimmity · 26/06/2019 07:13

Probably a silly question, but Where do you download podcasts? Is there an app?

Ragwort · 26/06/2019 07:16

Glad you asked that Anna as I was just about to, can someone please explain, in simple language, how to listen to a podcast on an iPhone.

Interested in this thread?

Use the Podcast app on the iPhone to download podcasts. There are other apps like Stitcher that you can use that also work on android.

I've really enjoyed:

  • Untold: The Daniel Morgan Murder
  • Intrigue
  • Serial
  • This American Life
  • Ear Hustle (about life in San Quentin prison)
  • The Adoption (a R4 podcast) - really superb
  • Today in Focus (a daily Guardian podcast focussing on 2 news items)
  • The Longest Shortest Time (parenting podcast)

I'm sure there are more. I love podcasts!

Charlieiscool · 26/06/2019 07:40

Ear Hustle is fantastic. It’s from San Quentin prison and honestly, it’s fascinating.

DonkeyHohtay · 26/06/2019 07:42

There are so many good ones.

Currently liking:

  • The Lady Vanished (Australian but with Kent links)
  • Death in Ice Valley
  • The Doorstep Murder
  • Blackout (drama, not documentary style)
  • Locked Up Abroad
  • Help I Sexted my Boss
  • The Dropout
  • Bear Brook
DonPablo · 26/06/2019 07:45

Have you watched chernobyl? Because there's a podcast for every episode and it's brilliant! The creator/writer of the show talks about how much was real, what was fictionalised, why they did certain things and its fascinating.

DonkeyHohtay · 26/06/2019 07:48

OK in simple terms how to listen to a podcast on an iphone:

look for the podcasts app on your phone. It's purple, looks like a person with two circles on it. or ((i)) Click on it.

At the bottom of the page, tap on "browse". There you'll see podcasts sorted, by category, so click on "new and noteworthy" or scroll to see other categories. "top shows" is the Podcast charts so you can see what's popular currently. Or click on the search function to look for a specific name, or topic.

When you find something you like the look of, tap "subscribe" or click the little + sign next to an episode name. It will then download to your phone.

Then play it in the same way as music, or listen through headphones.

DonkeyHohtay · 26/06/2019 07:51

Oh and podcasts are free. You don't pay to download them. But most, apart from BBC ones, have advertising. If it's an American podcast, the advertising will be entirely irrelevant. as you're listening, you can skip the advert by skipping 30 second forward using the button on the right which looks like a 30 with an arrow round it.

AWhistlingWoman · 26/06/2019 07:52

I love a lot of those already mentioned (I listen to a lot of podcasts!) but would add some of my latest finds.

Ologies - a fantastic podcast which interviews a different -ologist each week. They have had specialists in mushrooms, ants, trauma, trains, scorpions, cabins. It’s so interesting and funny.

RandomNameChange415 · 26/06/2019 07:58

This is the podcasts app on your iPhone - purple, middle left in the pic. I’ve filed mine away but yours will be loose.

I like Infinite Monkey Cage (humour and science).
Kermode and Mayo (chat and film). The Intelligence (news stories from the Economist).
In Our Time (accessible IMO - give it a go).
Rule of Three (comedians discussing comedy).
Brexitcast (give you three guesses)
and a bunch of stuff related to stuff I’m reading or watching - Game of Thrones, Buffy, Line of Duty.

Recommend a good podcast to me!
Spinderellacutituponetime · 26/06/2019 08:03

Funny and informative:
Answer Me This
The Unbelievable Truth
No Such Thing as a Fish (made my QI people)

Ragwort · 26/06/2019 08:08

Thank you for all the explanations, now I have to admit that I’ve never listened to music or used headphones on my iPhone but I am sure I can work that bit out. Grin

AWhistlingWoman · 26/06/2019 08:10

Pressed send too soon!

Extraordinary Stories podcast - a selection of really interesting real life stories, some true crime but not all. Told with a lot of humour and passion.

Trashy Divorces - two friends discuss scandalous divorces from Henry VIII to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Sakura7 · 26/06/2019 08:13

Kermode and Mayo is great and a very easy listen, helps if you have some interest in film though.

notacooldad · 26/06/2019 08:23

I think you might like The Drop out. I still can't make my mind up if Elizabeth Holmes was incredibly naive, or a scammer.

The lady vanishes is very interesting.
Teachers Pet.you wont get this if you are on Australia Chris Dawson has now been charged with murder after 35 ( I think it is) years.
You e mentioned Casefile. This is my favourite but I also like Nordic True Crime.

Today in Focus us good about current affairs

If you like Dirty John, theres 'who the hell is Hamish?' about a con artist. I think he has recently been jailed.

One that I found really good was casenotes. I think it was originally called classic FM casenotes.
Theres only a few episodes but it's the strange stories behind the deaths of some classical composers. Classical music is not my bag at all, I'd never listen to it by choice but the stories were really good.

There is a section podcasts on MN you can have a look at. I think it's a sub topic in the streaming section.

ComeOnGordon · 26/06/2019 08:23

They’re easy to download and I listen to them either with my headphones in when I’m out walking or I play them in the car when I’m driving. Just connect via Bluetooth.
I find the radio a bit repetitive so love getting absorbed in a good podcast

notacooldad · 26/06/2019 08:28

Probably a silly question, but Where do you download podcasts? Is there an app?
There are loads of different apps.
I like Castbox, my son like Sticher. Ince you e got the app just search Topics for things you are interested in eg true crime, politics, exercising,Gardening, Whatever you fancy!

DonkeyHohtay · 26/06/2019 08:29

Have just realised thanks to this thread that there's an update on Death in Ice Valley a year on! Off to listen...

@Ragwort - I don't listen to music on my phone either. It's very easy, just plug the headphones in at the bottom and play using the large forward arrow.

notacooldad · 26/06/2019 08:32

If you e got an old car like me just use an aux lead.
I also listen in the house when I'm housework days. I normally use a bluetooth speaker and move it room to room when I'm tidying!!

Lycanthropology · 26/06/2019 09:24

Ah, just as well Chat threads no longer disappear, as I think I’ll be referring back to this thread for a while!

Lots of excellent stuff here, thanks for all suggestions. I hope others are feeling inspired to listen to new things, too.

As for listening, I had no idea about the podcast app either!
I have only used Spotify so far, which has most things; also, I’ve found that you can download directly from some sites, e.g. BBC for the R4 podcasts, etc.

Lycanthropology · 26/06/2019 09:27

notacooldad I also have an old car, with no aux cable port so I bought a Bluetooth car adapter that allows you to listen through the speakers via the radio.

Ferfeckssake · 26/06/2019 10:07

I listen to Melyn Bragg' s " In Our Time". I like the historical ones best. You can chose catergories , then the subject you are interested in.
And I too, will be referring back to this.
