Bed sheets instead of duvet... does anyone do this?

Does anyone have bed sheets rather than duvets? With the warmer nights coming in, having even a thin tog duvet can seem a bit much. I'm just wondering if anyone uses sheets and layers them for use in the colder months? And if so, do you find this works better? Thanks.

I've never owned a duvet, always use sheets and blankets.

ineedaknittedhat · 26/06/2019 10:36

I just use a comforter/bedspread in the warmer months. During the winter I add a blanket or a few blankets. I can't stand duvets as they're too light, too hot and don't cover my feet and shoulders at the same time even though I'm not very tall.

TheFaerieQueene · 26/06/2019 10:38

I always have a sheet between me and DH and the duvet with a cover. It means if I get hot I can kick off the duvet and still have the sheet. I always make the bed this way.

I need weight on me to sleep, but once I started going through the menopause I found duvets hell! So I switched to a top sheet and gravity blanket. So much nicer. I have a nice fleecy blanket to stick over the top when I make the bed, or for when it's colder, but I won't ever go back to a duvet again.

Stillafatknacker · 26/06/2019 12:07

I do, I need something over me but normally end up back under the duvet Grin

SpaceCadet4000 · 26/06/2019 12:40

Flat sheet and blankets here. Summer ends up being just the flat sheet, spring and autumn flat sheet + 1 blanket, and winter usually +2 blankets.

It makes temperature control really easy, and everything can be easily washed. It always annoyed me how hard it was to wash the duvet part of the duvet.

WandaOff · 26/06/2019 13:04

I have asthma so everything has to be washable on a hot wash. Since the menopause I'm also always hot at night. So we have two single duvets on a KS bed so DH can be warm. I have a cotton sheet with a thin duvet on top that gets thrown off most of the time.
I really miss the cosiness of a weighty duvet, love the sound of the weighted throw Dogwalks2. Are they washable?

Redglitter · 26/06/2019 13:07

I have a flat sheet on my bed but still like a duvet. I've got a 1 tog one which I'd highly recommend.

Pinkfinkle · 26/06/2019 13:08

No but we have a bedspread. It’s tropical print, I bought it from Aldi last year. The material cools you down, I love it.

HollowTalk · 26/06/2019 13:15

What's this hot weather everyone is talking about? It's 16 degrees here!

WandaOff · 26/06/2019 13:31

HollowTalk Anything above 0c at night is hot to me since the menopause. Grin.
I've googled those weighted blankets and they look hot?
I bought a woollen duvet after it was recommended on MN. It was supposed to be 4 tog all year round. I cooked under it.

HildaSnibbs · 26/06/2019 14:49

I have a cotton cellular blanket, I think it's a double size one - it's huge Smile from Amazon and has a nice weight to it, I got a big one so I can fold it over to make it a bit thicker. Love it.

YesQueen · 27/06/2019 23:33

@WandaOff I run hot usually but in bed I get SO cold. Currently have a 13.5 tog duvet over my legs and thermal socks on Blush
It has to be scorching for me to remove socks in bed Grin my feet are blocks of ice

honeygirlz · 27/06/2019 23:49

TK Maxx have light, machine washable quilts for £30 for a king size.

Nat6999 · 27/06/2019 23:56

I use a fitted sheet on the bottom, flat sheet on top (kingsize on a double bed) Duvet & cover. I suffer hot flushes at night & end up flinging the duvet off but still like to be covered up.

RoseMartha · 28/06/2019 00:01

My asd dc prefer sheets and blankets. Just put more blankets on in winter. I think the most on the bed is 4, currently one.

FairyDust92 · 28/06/2019 00:08

No. I'm a weirdo and would never be able to sleep with a sheet on top of me it has to be a duvet Blush

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2019 00:34

I have double bed sheets, a blanket (the sort they have in American hotels, sort of velvety), a bedspread (White company) and then have a thin single duvet on top like an eiderdown - easy to either snuggle it up round my neck or chuck it off. And fold the bedspread off me if necessary too, it might be going tonight...

Temperature regulation tends to go to pot during and after menopause, I have no idea how people manage with the inflexibility of duvets. I really regret that they're the norm in hotels now.

FrogFairy · 28/06/2019 01:47

For hot weather I like an empty brushed cotton duvet cover, for me it is the ideal compromise between a duvet being too much and an empty cotton duvet being not enough.

managedmis · 28/06/2019 02:13

It's nice when you can manage to squeeze in under all the layers, very cosy.

Duvets are fine too, but not heavy enough I find. I do like the idea of a weighted blanket actually.

managedmis · 28/06/2019 02:14

Same. It has to be at least 30 for me to take my socks off in bed. Bloody bad circulation

Knitclubchatter · 28/06/2019 02:37

in the fall winter spring i have a feather duvet inside my duvet cover.
in the full on heat of the summer i use a cotton sheet inside the duvet cover.
