Bed sheets instead of duvet... does anyone do this?

Does anyone have bed sheets rather than duvets? With the warmer nights coming in, having even a thin tog duvet can seem a bit much. I'm just wondering if anyone uses sheets and layers them for use in the colder months? And if so, do you find this works better? Thanks.

I use both. A flat sheet helps the duvet cover to stay cleaner (ie, I don’t have to wash the cover every week, just the sheets). When it’s hot I just have the flat sheet covering me. Primark have some 400 thread cream flat sheets at the moment too for around a tenner.

My top tip is to buy a double size flat sheet for a king size bed so you don’t need to tuck the sides in.

Rosebud21 · 25/06/2019 22:49

I use the duvet cover, without the duvet, as I'm not warm enough with just a sheet in summer

WantLifeToBeBetter · 25/06/2019 22:51

Normally use a duvet bit when it gets really hot we take the stuffing out and just use the cover.

I really struggle to sleep without a duvet, I always pack a thin one when we go on holiday somewhere hot. It's comfier.

VenusClapTrap · 25/06/2019 23:06

I would like to find a halfway house between a duvet (too hot) and an empty duvet cover (too light).

WellTidy · 25/06/2019 23:06

My mum has used a fitted sheet, flat sheet and then the duvet, in a cover obvs, for years and years. When it is hot, she takes the duvet out of its cover and she finds that the flat sheet plus the duvet cover is a perfect weight.

I think the flat sheet under the duvet was to save on washing the duvet cover, back when matching duvet cover and curtains were a thing, then the duvet cover wouldn’t fade from being washed too many times so that it no longer matched Smile

Venus, that's exactly what I'm after. Just thinking a couple of sheets could be the answer?

Yes, I got rid of our duvet years ago.
I have a sheet, then a thin fleece then I'm not sure how to describe it like a large embroidered silky blanket thing then a thicker slightly padded blanket.
Depends on the weather what combination I have but they are my standard and if it's particularly cold I put a throw over

I love it and won't go back to a duvet.

1moremum · 25/06/2019 23:22

LOL My top tip is to buy a double size flat sheet for a king size bed so you don’t need to tuck the sides in.

my top tip is to buy king size sheets (duvet, etc) for a double bed so when you are both under the covers there is still plenty to drape far enough over so you don't get drafts. I guess this would be a bad idea when it is warm on summer nights but that doesn't actually happen in Glasgow.

DontCallMeShitley · 25/06/2019 23:23

I use layers throughout the year. Sometimes a sheet under the duvet, sometimes not. My duvet is 4.5 tog and I put a throw or bedspread on top and then a blanket for the cat to keep the hairs off the bed. In winter, if it is really cold I will also add another lightweight duvet but mainly just another throw.

It has just reached the temperature when I put a sheet under the duvet so I can push all the rest of the stuff off at night when I get hot and pull it back if I get cold.

wafflyversatile · 25/06/2019 23:25

Venus what about a quilted throw or a fleece blanket in a duvet cover?

I have a summer duvet or just a sheet or nothing when it's like this.

keepmoving · 25/06/2019 23:31

We bought a wool duvet last year as we wanted more than a sheet but too hot for a normal summer duvet - it was a perfect!

YesQueen · 25/06/2019 23:32

If it's really warm I use a flat cotton sheet and a merino wool blanket. Perfect temperature for me! Usually just have the blanket over my legs

MindfulBear · 25/06/2019 23:33

When we were co sleeping with our babies we got rid of the duvet for 9 months - summer and winter!!

Did it work better than a duvet.... no but not worse either.

In the summer we often use a duvet cover without the duvet. But we also have flat sheets in the cupboard waiting for the warmer weather!!!

MindfulBear · 25/06/2019 23:36

@Binting @1moremum
LOL!!!
My top tip for a flat sheet is to bury super king for a king or king for a double so there is no fighting over it if there is more than 1 of you in the bed...... plus I like to be tucked in!!!

Binting · 26/06/2019 07:34

@1moremum, totally with you on the king size bedding for double bed! King size flat sheets tend to be enormous though, and I can’t bear being tucked in 😄

livehappy69 · 26/06/2019 07:38

I am with you on the wool duvet...very light but really does regulate the temperature during the warmer months. I also bought the wool mattress protector which works even better.

expatinspain · 26/06/2019 07:38

I do, but I live in Spain. You'd die with a duvet here in the summer. I usually kick the sheet off too!

PlatypusPie · 26/06/2019 07:43

We have a duvet cover made from a heavier weight cotton that is only used, on its own - no duvet in it or top sheet , as a summer coverage. It’s the perfect weight - a sheet or unfilled lighter weight duvet cover is a bit too light for us.

MIdgebabe · 26/06/2019 07:59

heckonaplane I’d call it a bed spread.

VenusClapTrap · 26/06/2019 08:19

Right I’m going to order a wool duvet. We slept under the empty duvet cover last night, but the cat is very much a duvet fan so she was unimpressed. She was forced to sleep on my pillow as a result, so I woke up with a face full of fur.

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 26/06/2019 08:39

Bedspread here with sheet. King sized for a double

Dogwalks2 · 26/06/2019 08:45

What you need is a weighted throw/blanket. They have tiny glass beads in them and are like having a hug. My husband bought one as a surprise for me as he works away a month at a time, I thought it was a mad idea.... I was so wrong.
Since then we have also bought them as presents for elderly parents.
You will not be disappointed.

Theknacktoflying · 26/06/2019 08:48

I use the duvet as a quilt and roll down at night
Fitted sheet, flat sheet on top and then a cotton blanket - perfect

JacquesHammer · 26/06/2019 08:49

I have a couple of bedspreads. They’re perfect weight for summer, but then add an additional layer in winter!
