No national insurance number issued for my 16 yr old? Apparently a nationwide issue ATM?

Has anyone else had this?

My DD turned 16 recently. A few months before her birthday a letter came about her NI number which I didn't read properly and just filed away with her birth certificate etc assuming it contained the actual number.

She's hoping to find some work over the summer so I got the letter out for her, and it is just a letter to tell us her NI number will be sent out soon.

We've just spent ages on the phone and been told that it's down to an nationwide issue where some NI numbers haven't been issued but nobody knows why. I had to provide her child benefit number (fair enough) and then they wanted every address we've ever lived at (even though we have been in our current home a decade!). And then they said it will take about 3 months to come through. I said but what about if she wants to work over the summer and they claimed that an employer doesn't need an NI number and to explain to any prospective employer that they will need to issue her a temporary one blah blah. So I guess she won't be working this summer after all because you find me the employer who can be arsed doing that for a part time teenage member of staff!

She was born in the UK to British parents, etc etc, there is literally no reason for this, they're just claiming it's a computer glitch and there's nothing they can do to help further.

Ggggrrrr Angry

And yes obviously I'm aware I didn't spot the issue earlier but still! She was obviously on their system shortly before this supposed glitch occured Confused

A temporary NI number isn’t hassle at all.

RubberTreePlant · 25/06/2019 14:32

Huge overreaction to a non-problem.

Model some resilience.

caughtinanet · 25/06/2019 14:34

Has she been offered a job?

It does sound like you're overreacting a little, I'm sure it'll get sorted soon.

If you think modelling panic, catastrophisation, and mild xenophobia is preferable Dont, you go ahead and fill your boots Hmm

PositivelyPeach · 25/06/2019 14:59

It is very easy for the majority of employers to get her on their system with a temp NI number. Our system will auto generate one for employees without.

The downside to this is she will likely be emergency taxed until her correct NI number is issued.

Mysleepthiefslept · 25/06/2019 15:00

Same has happened to my son, but hes just been employed by McDonalds without it Smile

Do you have any clue how hard it is for teenagers to find work? There's a queue of other 16 yr olds just finished school and looking for summer work who already have an NI number and she will be at a massive disadvantage compared to them. It's standard for a lot of companies to ask for it at application stage now that employers are responsible for ensuring their staff are eligible to work in the UK - it's not worth the risk for them to employ someone who even might not be, they can be fined for it!

She's perfectly resilient thanks, as am I, but it's really frustrating and other MNers should be aware that apparently thousands of NI numbers haven't been issued, but the NI people have no idea which ones have or haven't, or exactly how many people are affected, and I suggest everyone checks that their teenagers has come though if they turned 16 in the first half of this year Smile

Also did you even know what resilience meant before it became the latest buzz word?

ummm... doesn't really warrant such a vent does it??

A computer programme has gone wrong. Things happen. It'll get sorted. She can use a temporary NI. Next issue??!!

JazzTheDog · 25/06/2019 15:03

Neither my son or step son got them at 16 last year, both had to phone up and request them. They received them within a week.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 25/06/2019 15:04

Thanks for the heads-up. I've just realised my 16 year old hasn't had one. I'll investigate. Cheers.

justasking111 · 25/06/2019 15:04

I had to be issued with an emergency NI number, it lasts to this day, they used to ask about it occasionally.

qwertypop · 25/06/2019 15:04

Mild xenophobia wtf? I'm just pointing out that there are no possible reasons that the current 'hostile environment' (which I might add I find vile and completely disagree with) would have affected her NI number being issued. It's not like they need to conduct extra check, or anything like that. I have no idea why they even wanted every address she's ever lived at, because not even the passport office or the bank wanted that Confused And I've claimed child benefit for her since she was born so they must already have a record of all that.

No. She won't beat any disadvantage at all because she lacks a NINO (and yes my DC are uni age so i am familiar with the age and market). It's an administrative niggle. She'll be fine as long as she has ID.

You need to calm down.

smallereveryday · 25/06/2019 15:07

The usual form for a temp NI no. Is date of birth followed by sex. No doubt there will be people howling about transgender rights but assuming not it goes like this;

TN010703F for Temp No. 1st July 2003.

Good luck.

PostNotInHaste · 25/06/2019 15:07

Thanks for posting this. DS is just over 15 years and 9 months so looking at website he should get something about it, but hasn’t but I’m sure if it’s as he’s only just over or entered a glitch zone, guess we’ll need to keep an eye on it.

SouthernComforts · 25/06/2019 15:11

Issuing a temporary NI number literally means ticking a box in the payroll system. It's actually less work than typing the NI number in (from a payroll perspective). Chill out.

titchy · 25/06/2019 15:19

Tell her to fill in the temp number in the format smallereveryday says. Job done. Computer no longer says no.

YummyOpalFruitsAndAztecBars · 25/06/2019 15:19

So I guess she won't be working this summer allocating a temp NINO is quicker than inputting a NINO manually. She is not disadvantaged by not having one so no need to worry, she'll be fine.

Comefromaway · 25/06/2019 15:23

I work in Payroll. If she has a passport she doesn't need a NI number to prove right to work in the UK.

The payroll software will automatically generate a temporary NI number. No hassle at all.

MaudeLynne · 25/06/2019 15:27

Temporary numbers aren't used anymore. Just leave it blank on payroll and let HMRC look in to it. Lack of a number shouldn't be a barrier to employment.

KnifeAngel · 25/06/2019 15:35

You are panicking about something that won't be a problem.

bigredvase · 25/06/2019 16:02

You're completely over reacting. A temporary NI number is not an issue at all.

Worked in recruitment & HR
Now work in benefits

bigredvase · 25/06/2019 16:06

A passport should be enough proof
