No national insurance number issued for my 16 yr old? Apparently a nationwide issue ATM?

Has anyone else had this?

My DD turned 16 recently. A few months before her birthday a letter came about her NI number which I didn't read properly and just filed away with her birth certificate etc assuming it contained the actual number.

She's hoping to find some work over the summer so I got the letter out for her, and it is just a letter to tell us her NI number will be sent out soon.

We've just spent ages on the phone and been told that it's down to an nationwide issue where some NI numbers haven't been issued but nobody knows why. I had to provide her child benefit number (fair enough) and then they wanted every address we've ever lived at (even though we have been in our current home a decade!). And then they said it will take about 3 months to come through. I said but what about if she wants to work over the summer and they claimed that an employer doesn't need an NI number and to explain to any prospective employer that they will need to issue her a temporary one blah blah. So I guess she won't be working this summer after all because you find me the employer who can be arsed doing that for a part time teenage member of staff!

She was born in the UK to British parents, etc etc, there is literally no reason for this, they're just claiming it's a computer glitch and there's nothing they can do to help further.

Ggggrrrr Angry

Payroll Manager here. You don't need an NI number to pay someone. It will not harm her recruitment because the employer will not ask for the ni number until after they have issued an offer letter and contract

This really isn't an issue - I'm not sure why the big over reaction

It's a really simple thing to do. It won't make any difference to her employability.

I do payroll, there's a simple procedure if an employee doesn't have access to their ni number.

But if you have any contact with the benefits system other than child benefit it will be on that, dd1 was on dla (now pip) do it was on letters even at 10 years old, ni numbers are generated when births are registered dwp told me

My son didn't get his and is now 17. I only noticed when he applied a few weeks ago for his provisional driving license. It took about a week to have one sent through. Your daughter's should be ready by the time school breaks up. They didn't ask us any of those questions. I think we just gave address and his passport details. Incidentally, he had to ring up himself as it belongs to the 16 year old not the parents. It was very straight forward.

My dd has just received hers, but looking at websites, think Tesco’s or maybe primark you had to enter your national insurance no on the online application, so we didn’t get as far as payroll generating a new one that would be much further along the process.

Anyhow I hear what you’re saying about making one up yourself temporarily or could just contact Tesco/primark and speak to someone in payroll/recruitment.

As others have said, this is a non issue. I hope you feel a bit calmer now OP.

A timely post, OP, as my 17 yo has just been offered a summer job and we have just realised he doesn't have an NI number. I just told him not to worry and that it would all be fine. Confused DD has a weekend job, and is 15 so doesn't have an NI number. So it's obviously not that big an issue.
