Hit a cat with my car tonight

Was driving home from a meal out with DCs (7&3) and DH. Cat ran out in front of the car when we were nearly home and we went straight into it Sad

No collar. Cat very much alive but clearly injured. Took him straight to the OOH vet where he's been taken in for observation and treatment. He's got a chip, so now some poor person down the street is dealing with knowing their cat is badly injured and might not survive.

I know it wasn't my fault but I feel like shit. Keep replaying it in my mind. Poor DCs were very traumatised by it all. I know I should go to bed now but I am dreading closing my eyes.

Don't know why I'm posting really but I needed to talk about it. Sad

Poor you. What a horrible shock. You did the right thing though. You took it to the vet and gave it a chance. Many horrid people don’t even stop. I hope it’s ok and I hope you and your family feel a bit better/calmer soon Flowers

Frownette · 23/06/2019 23:07

It's a horrible feeling but you did all you could for the cat after the accident

Fingers crossed it pulls through

LemonGingerCakes · 23/06/2019 23:08

Thank you for taking him to a vet.

I did the same and I was in tears for days. You did the right thing, he will have medical care and painkillers. Was he chipped? Then they’ll contact the owner.

There’s nothing you could have done, but you did the right thing after the event.

Geraniumpink · 23/06/2019 23:08

Well done for taking it straight to the vets. Try not to feel too bad. It is a calculated risk that cat owners knowingly take when they let their cats out. We’ve always let ours out and have had one killed on the roads, despite it being fairly quiet round here. I hope you get some sleep.

MoreSchnitzelPlease · 23/06/2019 23:10

You did the right thing taking the cat to a vet, it must have been such a shock for you. Whatever happens, the owners can take comfort in the fact that their cat was cared for and not left to suffer on the side of the road. You did the best you could to help.

SeraphinaDombegh · 23/06/2019 23:17

Thank you all, your kind words are helping. The vet was cautiously optimistic as the cat was awake and responsive, only time and xrays will tell now. They have promised to update me with news. I'm praying he pulls through. He was a lovely thing despite being in shock. I'm going to go to bed and try to count sheep.

Oh, I’m so sorry. My cat is a complete turd and dashes across the road regularly and if someone hit him I absolutely wouldn’t blame them. You took the cat to the vet and did everything you could.

You hit the cat but but took him to vet so did all you can. Cats unfortunately do not look both ways before crossing the road. Owner will not blame you but will be grateful you rook cat to vet to give it a fighting chance.

surlycurly · 23/06/2019 23:28

I watched my cat run out in front of a car and get killed about two years ago. It was dark and there was absolutely nothing that the driver could have done. I felt so terrible for him and his family as he stayed with me until the cat died (I will spare you the details but it was quick), and helped me move him as I didn't want to touch him. My children were there and were hysterical. The guy must have felt awful. I kept reassuring him it wasn't his fault. Please don't blame yourself.

Frownette · 23/06/2019 23:34

surlycurly :(

It breaks your heart to see them hurt

Noroof · 23/06/2019 23:35

It's ok... don't blame yourself

HolidaySleep · 23/06/2019 23:50

What county are you in? Our cat hasn't come in yet and this thread is making me nervous (I know it's incredibly unlikely!)

Redshoesandtheblues · 24/06/2019 00:14

OP,

You acted responsibly with care and compassion after the accident. The owner will be grateful for that.

You did the right thing and I hope it works out well for all.

How awful OP, but it's not your fault. You did the right thing by taking him to the vet, many people just leave them which is horrible.

My friend's cat got hit by a car and it really wasn't looking good at the time, but he made a full recovery and is still going strong three years later.

dothewalkoflife · 24/06/2019 00:25

Complete cat lover here! You absolutely did the right thing. If you had left the cat, the poor thing would be suffering alone, with chances of survival dwindling. Cats are total rascals with running under cars etc (hence the nine lives!), the owner will be so glad that you were kind enough to give their cat the best chance. Hoping the little cat pulls through.

SeraphinaDombegh · 24/06/2019 12:49

Thanks all. Sleep has made me feel better, still a bit wobbly but feel normal-ish again. Hoping to hear about the cat later today.

@HolidaySleep W Yorkshire. Though I'm hoping that by now, the cat's owner has been contacted from his chip.

Thank You for taking the cat to a vets .

Wish those who ran over my cats had bothered to do that , but instead left them to die ,
You done the right thing.

Sakura7 · 24/06/2019 13:15

Fingers crossed the little guy pulls through and you get some good news soon.

TipseyTorvey · 24/06/2019 13:28

You are a super star. Another one here with stupid cats that dash everywhere. You can't teach them stop-look-listen. We put burglar spikes all over our fencing to stop them and they still bloody go onto the front road. You did everything right and nothing wrong. Please don't be too stressed.

elessar · 24/06/2019 13:34

Thank you so much for taking the cat to the vets.

I've lost a few cats over the years to car accidents but nobody has ever bothered to stop let alone try and help - that's unforgivable in my eyes.

HolidaySleep · 24/06/2019 13:34

Thanks @seraphina I was being a bit paranoid. Ours came in at the crack of dawn.

Glad you're feeling better. It must be an awful feeling but you did all you could. It's just one of those things.

tessiegirl · 24/06/2019 13:38

Another one who just wants to say thank you for taking the cat to the vets. If this ever happenrd to one of ours is really hope someone would do the same.
Feel sad for you op. I dread this.
Really hope cat is ok.

spiderlight · 24/06/2019 15:38

Oh bless you - what a horrible shock. Thank you for stopping and taking the cat to the vet though. An awful lot of people wouldn't have bothered. I hope you get good news from the vet today Flowers

SeraphinaDombegh · 25/06/2019 14:17

The cat's owner very kindly got in touch last night. He was too severely injured to save and he was put to sleep Sad but she was there with him and she was thankful that I'd taken him to the vet. I feel very sad but I'm glad I know the outcome.
