Hairstyles for little girls for school?

DD starts school in September, they have a 2 bobble limit for hair which I completely accept and understand, but need some hairstyles to keep DD neat and tidy.

She is only just 4 and tiny for her age, but I am big on her looking smart so anything that is smart but cute and doesn’t make her already huge uniform look gigantic on her please. Something without needing to use grips or slides as these are banned in school.

So far I can think of:
2 plaits (one bobble each)
2 ponytails (one bobble each)
1 low ponytail (one bobble – I don’t like high ponytails)
1 plait (bobble at top and bottom or one bobble)

Any others? I am attempting to learn to French/dutch braid but it’s not going well.

Blimey! No help to you whatsoever, but what bizarre rules! Never come across anything so odd.

The 2 bobble limit and no clips sounds ridiculous. What about kids with afro type hair? Those at DD's school often have more than two and they're simple hairstyles.
A mid level ponytail is good and quick. Plaiting it keeps knots to a minimum!
Buy a nitty gritty comb in preparation for headlice and do a weekly comb through! Prevention sprays do not work just a marketing ploy.

BackforGood
I'm imagining it's probably been a response to people sending kids in in all sorts and so they've gone super prescriptive (to the point of unhelpful). The excessive fashion stuff could easily have been covered by a rule saying plain hair coloured bobbled and small gold/silver/natural slides.

Vinorosso74 I'm guessing someone senior didnt think of that. Grin I was reading something interesting the other week about the issues of how schools treat afro hair. It was eye opening.

My DDs like a kind of pushed through ponytail.

Whatever we did with (plain hair or school coloured) bobbles, it was always topped off with a gingham or plain hair band in the school colour. Gets round the problem of no grips and keeps hair out of eyes whem it starts slipping out of style by lunchtime! M&S, Asda, JL etc sell sets of these with bobbles and clips in the school uniform section. Just give the clips away, or save a little bagful for charity shop?

There are some great tutorials on YouTube, I like Toddler Haorstyles (I think that's what it's called)

Are plain bobby pins allowed? My DD couldn't have fit all her hair in with those rules. She has a huge forehead & top part of her head, which somehow makes two plaits or pigtails plus clips the only way to keep it all neat.

HufflepuffHarpy · 24/06/2019 09:36

are you sure the rule isn't aimed at jojo bows and funky clips?

My DDs school says 'no bows' but i checked and my DD's gingham bows in school colours are fine, as is her alice band with a bow in school colours.

If it is meaning all clips - what about girls who's fringe/hair is still growing to tie-backable length? I had to put at least 4 clips (school colours) across DD's head to keep her fringe back while it grew out.

I can do all manner of fun hairstyles but in all honesty DD prefers a standard pontail half way up the back of her head. Occassionally 2 pontails or a french braid.

CatcherofDreams · 24/06/2019 09:50

I found that two tight, smart plaits kept the nits a bay (mostly)

REllenR · 24/06/2019 09:55

We normally do a mid high ponytail or bunches (either plaited or just tied back). Wish I could do French plaits!

No clips seems bizarre - both my girls would have hair in their eyes all day without them! They both still have hair growing out even though we've never cut a fringe in their hair, just slow growing.

Footle · 24/06/2019 10:26

@Vinorosso74 , my first thought was that there must be an unusual lack of diversity in this school!

A hair band would solve this.

I do this in my 3.5 year olds hair but scoop the loose hair into a ponytail. It is by far the longest lasting hair style she's had.

I also do a top ponytail joined into a back ponytail.

Both styles are great for keeping all the fringe length hairs out of her face for pre school.

With just two bobbles it would have to be bunches either side of her head and vary with them being low, medium or high or the practicality and neatness of two plaits either side, Indian Squaw style which I often favour myself!

NeverPutAWetFootInABirkenstock · 24/06/2019 15:11

Blimey, how exhausting all this is. What's wrong with hair just being practical and comfortable? Thank the lord DD's school is fairly normal, they can wear their hair how they like, and the only banned thing is JoJo bows.
