Hairstyles for little girls for school?

SaysHi · 23/06/2019 20:06

DD starts school in September, they have a 2 bobble limit for hair which I completely accept and understand, but need some hairstyles to keep DD neat and tidy.

She is only just 4 and tiny for her age, but I am big on her looking smart so anything that is smart but cute and doesn’t make her already huge uniform look gigantic on her please. Something without needing to use grips or slides as these are banned in school.

So far I can think of:
2 plaits (one bobble each)
2 ponytails (one bobble each)
1 low ponytail (one bobble – I don’t like high ponytails)
1 plait (bobble at top and bottom or one bobble)

Any others? I am attempting to learn to French/dutch braid but it’s not going well.

You could do that one where you do a ponytail with the top half of the hair then put that and the remaining loose hair together into a low ponytail if you see what I mean!

SaysHi · 23/06/2019 20:10

formerbabe I understand that'd look quite cute actually!

Plaits, either one or two. It's the lowest risk hairstyle for nits and is most likely to survive PE.

French plait or the one formerbabe describes if we're in a rush. Weird banning hair slides though. Never heard of that before. DD's hair is a total mess if I don't put a slide in each side.

I've found it's a good idea to have a little stash of bobbles in their school bag.

2 buns are very cute as well.

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/06/2019 20:18

French bob?

SaysHi · 23/06/2019 20:19

French bob?

DD is very vocal about wanting long hair so I don't want to go against her wishes.

A bun with one of those clippy things.

MyDcAreMarvel · 23/06/2019 20:24

Never heard of a two bobble limit , how bizarre x

Ignore x was also texting.

what’s wrong with a high one?

I always think they look like they'll block someone elses view of the board/whatever the teachers doing and also I think they make her look older than she is.

Take a look at these - they are all easy to do. To get round the two-bobble rule, buy some hair elastics (£2 for 250 on ebay) that match DDs hair colour and use those for the sectioning.

If you want to avoid nits then your best use of the 2 bobbles is a simple plait, secured top and bottom.

This is my favourite style tbh but do want a bit of variety.

The hair into a mid high ponytail with a bobble then plait it (second bobble at end of plait). Is more secure than a play alone and should last all day.

Also part hair in middle, make a small plait each side to centre back of head. Tie together intp ponytail using bobble. Then plait ponytail.

If hair is long enough do a high plait each side then loop them. Disclaimer when I used to have my hair like this as a kid my fellow pupils said it looked like a doorknocker and would be tapping my looped plait against my head all day saying knock knock. It does look cute though.

I've never heard of a ban on hairslides or clips or limit on bobbles. A lot of local schools have always said school colours and no jojo bows but banning all slides seems crazy!

ceebeejeebies · 23/06/2019 20:33

I always do 2 Dutch braids into one bobble at the nape of her neck and then a bun at the back with a bow clip for my 3yo DD. Keeps it all out of her face and the nits out, and I think it looks really smart.

LolaSmiles · 23/06/2019 20:34

I'd also suggest single plaid bobble top and bottom or two plaits.

The slide thing is awkward because they help keep hair neat. I would imagine that in the past they've had people coming in with ridiculous hair accessories so have had to make the rule for the lowest denominator (even though most would have plain hair coloured/gold/silver clips or those cute ones that match summer dresses).

autumndreaming · 23/06/2019 20:34

I think the opposite of you, I think low ponytails make children look older. Low just looks scruffy to me.

I definitely think one or two French plaits survive the best - PE, taking jumpers on and off, running around etc.

My 4 year old is starting school in September too. She has hair nearly down to her bum!
I usually do 2 french plaits (I've only just learnt but I'm quite good now.)
I've also learnt to do a french plait that starts at the side and goes round the bottom of her hair line, round the back and into a side pony tail (I'll see if I can find a pic)
I love a messy bun on the top of her head with a big bow (yes I love a bow, not sure if they are permitted in your child's school.)
When I'm rushed, it's a simple high pony tail with a bow. Can I also suggest Vosene spray, it has tea tree in it and acts as a nit repellent. It also helps when trying to get all the hair into a bobble.

DD5 has two french plaits everyday. She has v long hair, a bit frizzy/curly, and is a very active child. This is the only hairstyle that survives the day!

(Plus, touch wood, no nits since starting in September.)

Seeline · 23/06/2019 20:40

Google fish tail plait. Very easy to do once you've got the hang of it, and just looks a bit different from the usual ponytail plait.

AnnaComnena · 23/06/2019 20:52

Instead of slides, would she be allowed a plain hair band in school colour to keep any short wispy bits off her face? (I imagine slides would be forever fiddled with, or falling out, and getting lost.)

SaysHi · 23/06/2019 20:56

They are allowed a soft (aliceband?) type headband in the school colours or black.
