Oo I'm jealous. I wanted to move to Liverpool. But didn't like Alder Hey so that's out.

My friend lives in Cressington Oark. It's lovely!

BillywigSting · 25/06/2019 15:53

I grew up in Waterloo, right by the railway pub and train station. Went to school in sacred heart (which has gone hugely downhill and I wouldn't send my worst enemy there) but it's a lovely area. Less well to do than Crosby which I found a bit snobby but great nightlife, close to the beach and swimming baths, good transport links, the cinema is fab. Both south Road and St John's Road have plenty to offer. The marina is great too.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 25/06/2019 15:54

Not Kirkby! 😱 Or Huyton! Don't really know Aintree, sorry.

@YouWhoNeverArrived Formby is lovely (my parents live there) but it is expensive and there aren't many rentals.

OP, good luck on Saturday and if possible look for places near a station, Merseyrail is great and will be invaluable for your older dc's.

BillywigSting · 25/06/2019 15:54

Avoid kirby like the plague it's the absolute armpit of the city. Huyton has some nice areas

BillywigSting · 25/06/2019 15:56

Agree, merseyrail is probably one of the best rail networks in the country. Reasonably priced, frequent, clean etc

YouWhoNeverArrived · 25/06/2019 16:09

@nonstopbuttmachine I used to live in Crosby, and have family in Formby. We'll be buying, and our budget will be about £400k, so from what I can see on Rightmove we should manage a 3 or 4 bed detached. I live in a cheap part of the Midlands atm and have a big 4 bed detached with a lovely garden which only cost £370k, so I will have to downsize a bit, sadly.

RubyViolet · 25/06/2019 16:11

Merseyrail can take you into some really lovely areas on the Wirral. Heswall and West Kirby both have amazing schools, beaches, shops and have train stations if you are not driving. Both areas have a lot of restaurants and gastro pubs too. Might be worth looking for work there too.
I had a look on Rightmove Rentals there isn’t much on the market there at the moment, the ones that are may well take an offer.

soccerbabe · 25/06/2019 16:58

In your price range, I'ld go for Aigburth (L17) as it's a v nice area, and has a few 3 bedroom houses in your price range for rent.

Hoppinggreen · 25/06/2019 17:04

So you are hoping for 2 Secondary places and 1 Primary this September?
You’ve missed allocation so it might be worth finding out which schools have places available, although the added complication is that you won’t have an address in the area until you move so applying from miles away makes things more difficult

BitOfFun · 25/06/2019 18:02

Kirkby and Aintree are a bit rough really (no offence to people who live there), and you don't get the benefit of the beach. The traffic in Aintree is pretty hideous too, which would put me off living there.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 25/06/2019 19:47

@YouWhoNeverArrived you should be able to get a decent detached house in Formby for that price! Unless you're looking towards Freshfield/Victoria Rd area where it's a bit WAG-y?

YouWhoNeverArrived · 25/06/2019 20:11

@nonstopbuttmachine No, though ideally we'd like to be within walking distance of the beach. I realise we can't afford Victoria Road! We can't move for another 12-18 months, so I'll start looking seriously then.

@bitoffun I grew up in Aintree and I don't agree it's rough, apart from maybe on the border with Fazakerley. I wouldn't live in Fazakerley, but Aintree Village is pleasant enough and is in the catchment for reasonable primary and secondary schools.

I agree with PP suggesting that you live near a Merseyrail station, OP - the regular, reliable, safe, clean trains are a real perk of living in Merseyside.

BeeFarseer · 25/06/2019 20:18

I also grew up in Aintree and my nan still lives there. It's definitely not rough until you get to the Fazakerley border.

Definitely find somewhere near a Merseyrail station, it'll be invaluable for commuting and exploring.

BillywigSting · 25/06/2019 22:09

Yeah Aintree is nice enough (gets a bit nuts around the races but it's only one weekend a year) Fazakerley isn't quite as nice. There is a pretty good hospital there with a half decent A&E though

BitOfFun · 25/06/2019 22:13

@YouWhoNeverArrived, my apologies: you are absolutely right that I'm thinking of the Fazackerley end.

Jemma30 · 26/06/2019 11:33

Iv got a viewing on Saturday for a 3bed on jubilee avenue l14 !

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 26/06/2019 13:51

I honestly wouldn't- it's run by gangsters. But good luck!

unruly336 · 26/06/2019 14:06

Hi, I've lived in Liverpool all my life.

I'd probably recommend to live in West Derby, reasonable house prices, naice area, near Alder Hey hospital and bus links to South Liverpool secondary schools. Also can't go wrong with Childwall, Aigburth, Allerton, Woolton. Some parts of Halewood are nice but it's hit and miss, but you'll get more for your money there.

When looking at primary schools look for which secondary schools they feed to, the best secondary schools for girls in Liverpool are; Bluecoat (grammar), Kind David (Jewish, St. Edwards (Catholic), St. Julies (Catholic all girls), Belvedere Academy (Former private all girls), Liverpool College (Former private, v hard to get in to).
All are South Liverpool except St.Edwards which is in West Derby.

I attended Childwall School and Broadgreen International a few years back, both schools had good points but I wouldn't recommend either.

WhiskersPete · 26/06/2019 14:10

Just seen this thread. I live in Norris Green Village with my baby and DP and there's no gun crime ffs and I've never seen any gang culture either. NG isn't what is used to be and there are much worse areas of Liverpool.

fairweathercyclist · 26/06/2019 14:21

My uncle lived in Woolton, that's quite a nice area. He died last year but my aunt is still there.

I agree that Walton is quite (very) rough but to be honest I have never felt uncomfortable there - my cousin lived in L4 for a bit (near Goodison Park) and looking back it was rough but I loved visiting. But with four daughters? Probably would't be my first choice but see the pp above said some of the schools are good. My aunt lived in Walton (L9) until she was 85 and never had any problems. My grandmother was burgled once there (back in the 80s though).

Cousins lived in Crosby.

It is a great city, genuinely friendly in a way that other places just aren't.

fairweathercyclist · 26/06/2019 14:22

Oh and avoid Knowsley. If you want to go outside the city, Ormskirk is quite nice and no need to go on motorways.

ElizaPancakes · 26/06/2019 14:22

I live in a deprived area which would probably be shat on too but I like it here. Good schools, close to everything, easy access to the city and also to the motorway - never experienced any crime but I suppose that doesn’t mean I haven’t just been lucky with my street.
