Im going to have to pay £40 each way if not to get a hold bag to put my medication in.
The gel comes in metered pumps that I apply every day so I must take it with me.
Has anyone managed to take it in their hand luggage?

Wouldn’t you need a doctors letter as if it is Oct 100 ml they will bin it.

Fibbke · 20/06/2019 10:35

You can't. You will need to pay for hold luggage.

Fibbke · 20/06/2019 10:35

The law is to stop people blowing up planes.

I guess you could call the airline and ask them.

You need a drs note and prescription I think, check the website but medicines have special arrangements

CloudRusting · 20/06/2019 10:37

You can take over 100ml in hand luggage for “essential medicines” with a doctors letter or prescriptions according to gov.uk but they may need to open to test it.

But that is the UK though. You’d need to investigate the other end’s approach.

Unburnished · 20/06/2019 10:38

If its Estrogel, can you swap to patches instead for the duration of your holiday? You’d still need a doctors letter though.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/06/2019 10:38

Can you mail/courier it to meet you at your destination?

orangeshoebox · 20/06/2019 10:40

prescription medicines are excempt but you need to show the prescription/a dr letter.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 20/06/2019 10:43

Check the requirements of where you're going, too. A doctors letter and a sealed container is usually enough in the UK, although they may open it to test the product. But some countries won't accept that on the way back, so you may need hold luggage anyway. And check the costs for a letter from your doctor, mine charge £45 so hold luggage is usually cheaper.

Birdie6 · 20/06/2019 10:47

This information indicates that you can take it, as long as you have a doctor's letter . www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions/essential-medicines-and-medical-equipment

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/06/2019 11:43

Also check it's ok in your destination - some countries forbid the most random "normal for here" medications, even with prescriptions.

Middle East mainly, but US also has some strangely puritan ideas (I know they are funny about stuff like Sudafed for example)

ihatethecold · 20/06/2019 17:28

im going to Italy this Saturday and yes its Oestrogel.

when you say prescription do you mean the slip that has the repeat meds on it because that is all I have.

If you take medication, you need a copy of the prescription, and keep it in a separate bag.

ihatethecold · 20/06/2019 18:10

Well I’m screwed then. Unless I decant some into little pots!

ive taken liquid medication that comes in 300ml glass bottles through airport security to and from america no issue. I have had to have a copy of my prescriptions and they x ray it separately each time but its never been an issue as i believe there are different rules if its a medical item

FreshlyRoastedCoffee · 20/06/2019 18:31

I decanted cream in little pots (not that one but a skin one) and it was fine

NoBaggyPants · 20/06/2019 18:36

How long are you going for? I put mine into a little pot, it's fine if you're used to the amount you use.

frazzledmumoftwo · 20/06/2019 18:42

My mum had to take medical bits as an extra hand luggage bag (complicated inhaled antibiotics stuff) and was fine with a GP letter.

ihatethecold · 20/06/2019 18:47

I don’t have time to get a letter or a prescription unfortunately.
I’m leaving on Saturday

I’ve taken bottles of morphine over 100ml into France, Italy and America with no problems - I’ve just made sure I have the prescription label on it plus my list of repeat medications (which no one has ever asked to see)

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 20/06/2019 19:41

It's very likely it'll get thrown away then. Can you decant it? Or ask the doctors for a rushed letter? They might do it same day for a higher fee...

I've been to Italy, they weren't the easiest on the way back despite me having a letter and a new prescription, but I did get it through. I don't think I'd have been allowed to without at least one.

PouncerDarling · 20/06/2019 19:42

You can take medication though. It's exempt from the liquid regulations.

aIways · 20/06/2019 20:14

Your repeats list should be fine, should it not?

I used to work at a GP surgery so have seen and transcribed hundreds of letters and have never seen one saying that a person is on a certain type of medication to take abroad. Have had many people ask for a printout of their repeat meds for this reason though.

ihatethecold · 20/06/2019 21:39

Thanks
I can’t risk losing the medication because I don’t have a replacement.
The gel comes out in metered doses so it’s a bit risky to put 8 doses in one jar/ bottle.

I’m also worried about putting my only canister in the hold.

I have taken that through many airports in the UK and wider EU. I just keep it in its box with the prescribing label on the outside. I put it in its own tray through the X-ray, it gets pulled in every uk airport and they check the name against my passport. Mostly in the EU it passes without comment.
