Talk to me about private number plates

Firsttimemummy19 · 19/06/2019 17:54

DH has suggested buying me a private plate with our babies name on it. He's found one which is £300 and thinks it's a good idea as we could pass it on to our boy when he's older.

I like the idea of passing it on so I'm swaying towards getting one but I'm not 100% sure. Are they a bit crappy?! What's the pros and cons of having one?

Generally in my experience there is a very strong correlation between twatish driving in some naff modified car with music blasting out of it and personalised reg plates.

PeePooAndPaperOnly · 20/06/2019 09:52

Get one, it's a present for life

ineedtogotobedanyway · 20/06/2019 09:55

I have one on my business vehicle. It hasn't made me drive like a twat 🤷🏻‍♀️

Honestly? I think they're really naff.
What matters is what you think though

stucknoue · 20/06/2019 10:00

A bit tacky but each to their own ...

knittedthrow · 20/06/2019 10:02

Also your son may not want it when he's older. In my mind they're already quite old fashioned. In the same vein as hiring a stretch limo for your hen do.

Nottobesoldseparately · 20/06/2019 10:06

I've got one. I love it. It was a 40th Birthday present. And to set everyone off in a froth matches with my husband's!!!

It's the old style, of Letter,number,number,number letter,letter,letter

So obviously personalised as my car is only a couple of years old. It has my initials and the same 3 numbers.

With the new format, loads of people will have personalised ones without you even realising it.
My mum got a new car, the plate is personal to her completely by chance. The grandkids love it!

MustardScreams · 20/06/2019 10:07

Tacky as hell. But if you like it go for it.

BusterTheBulldog · 20/06/2019 10:08

If the son doesn’t want it, he can sell it though (or his dad can).

Just off to do a traffic survey looking out for all the traits listed above Wink

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 20/06/2019 10:10

I skipped the 2nd page so apologies if this has already been said, but mine has tripled its value since I bought it #justsaying Grin I'm obviously a pretentious twat !

ImpracticalCape · 20/06/2019 10:16

@Ambydex I worked for DVLA. The official name is 'cherished plates' so it's not an affectation. I had the job of transferring them from one car to the other and doing the paperwork.

Bravelurker · 20/06/2019 10:17

I don't think it's just mumsnet that thinks they are tacky but if any of you watch 'The Good Place' vanity place will give you negative points that could land you in the Bad Place Grin.
Apologies if you don't watch and I don't care about personalised number plates as my DB has them on his Jag Wink.

Snog · 20/06/2019 10:18

It's hard to go incognito with a personal plate as your car is much more easily identifiable to friends and acquaintances.

Do what makes you happy OP. Some people will think the plates are cool and some will think they are wanky, none of this really matters.

Bravelurker · 20/06/2019 10:18

platesobviously.

Snog · 20/06/2019 10:19

I do think it's a cute idea as a modern family heirloom.

BusterTheBulldog · 20/06/2019 10:22

Are you a spy snog?! I know what you mean though Grin

shazchip · 20/06/2019 10:40

I've had mine a few years on two different cars, i like it and my friends like it (they refer to my car by it, it's a play on my nickname). Don't really give a toss what strangers think of it/me, I'm not doing it for them (or anyone really)! 😃

Fabellini · 20/06/2019 19:31

I’ve got them, they’re my initials and a digit. I got them from my parents for my 40th...a long time ago.
They’ve been on the banger I had at the time, and the very nice brand new car I have now and I give zero fucks about anyone else’s opinion of them, I love them.

OldUnit · 20/06/2019 19:35

I work in the motor trade. We all think they're wanky and a waste of money, it isn't just a Mumsnet thing,

No one's fooled by the 'age of the car' thing. Anyone interested enough to give a shit already knows it's an older model....

It's vanity, whatever. Own it.

Finfintytint · 20/06/2019 19:37

The official name is cherished transfer not cherished plates.
It’s true you can’t make a car appear younger but if you have a cherished transfer on a car you may not be able to tell if a car is brand new or a few years old, especially if the model spec hasn’t changed.
It’s just a vanity thing. No biggie just not my cup of tea.

Lordamighty · 20/06/2019 19:42

I have one, it’s my name plus some numbers, no weird spacing or screws required. I like it, don’t give a toss what anyone else thinks, can always remember my reg.
It’s now on my 3rd new car so not trying to hide the age, which is the usual criticism by the green eyed brigade on here.

Oldraver · 20/06/2019 19:43

We have two so double wanky

Mine is the year letter, number then my initials. sort of ....W9 BUG. It doesn't hide the name of the car and as it only has one number instead of the standard three I guess you would clock it as a private plate...but I bought it for me not to brag to others.

OH's is his (5 letter) surname with the year in between so...SM66 ITH...His name is unusual so doubt anyone outside the family would notice. He says it brings a smile to his face when he sees it, so worth every penny.

Finfintytint · 20/06/2019 19:45

Green eyed brigade...lol

CurlsandCurves · 20/06/2019 20:20

My mum got my dad one. Unless you know him and his date of birth you’d have no idea it was a personalised plate.

ElfrideSwancourt · 20/06/2019 20:41

I saw one very recently that was P5 EDO - I read it as paedo but maybe they just had unfortunate initials. Made me double take though and made my husband read it too in case I had missed something - but no that was it 🙄
