Hpv vaccine

FrumpyKnickers · 19/06/2019 16:00

My daughter is due to get this next year. I really do not want her to get it. She has had all her other vaccinations so no problem with vaccinating her its just something does not sit well with me on this. They are really pushing it even talking about making vaccines mandatory. What do others think? have any of your kids been vaccinated and were there any side affects?

You're believing the conspiracy theory stuff around the HPV vaccine

It's not conspiracy theory though, is it. There are real people that have had their lives changed by this vaccine. I don't think we know enough about the long term effects either.

Op, my DD and another girl at school were the only two kids that didn't have it. The other girl's mother didn't want her DD to have it because her friend got cervical cancer despite having the jab Confused

I think It's a hard decision to make so good luck coming to a conclusion.

lljkk · 19/06/2019 21:06

Infertility Claim is a new one on me.
WebMD says it's bollocks myth.

I'm curious, OP: why did the other jabs your DD has had, they seemed safe, but THIS one worries you? What has changed?

PinkDaffodil2 · 19/06/2019 21:08

But the OP has a theory there is a conspiracy to cover up infertility being caused by by the jab. How is that not a conspiracy theory? To believe that on balance the risks outweigh the benefits you must either believe in conspiracy theories or that your daughter will never be sexually active (lots of people manage to believe both).
We know it reduced pre-cancerous changes by 90% in Scotland. These are real women who won’t die as a result of cancer or suffer the side effects of treatment / further investigation including infertility and late miscarriages.

There have been many girls allegedly adversely affected by it

Citation, please?

I have two problems with the HPV vaccination:

  1. They don't give it to boys, who are either vectors in heterosexual sex or both vectors and patients in gay sex, and
  1. My DD was just too old to get it.
userxx · 19/06/2019 21:30

Frumpy, could you forgive yourself if she ended up with cervical cancer because you chose not to vaccinate? That's what it boils down to.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 19/06/2019 21:42

Mil has just had her cervix removed due to cancer caused by HPV.Ive had a colposcopy due to HPV and will have to have another soon.Let her have the vaccine it would be irresponsible not to.

Tr1skel1on · 19/06/2019 21:59

My dad had HPV throat cancer. It was horrific.

My DD has had the vaccine and I signed the consent form for my other DD today. No concerns at all. I've seen the alternative....

I have one major problem with the vaccine though, boys should be able to have it too!!!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 19/06/2019 22:09

The nurse was talking about it today when I had my depo injection

Something like 60% drop since the vaccine. I don’t know why anyone would say no. I’m going to ask about paying for my ds to have it

PanamaPattie · 19/06/2019 22:18

Is there any evidence that the vaccine works and how long it lasts?

Pipandmum · 19/06/2019 22:20

I though they were rolling it out for boys in England too?
My daughter has had it and I paid for my son to have it too. I can’t think of a good reason why not. The benefits far far far outweigh the risks.

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 19/06/2019 22:20

Japan and some Latin American countries have concerns and I think Japan withdrew the vaccine .
Don't be bullied into believing your wish to research this is nonsense ...why not?

Lots out there on both sides, I certainly like to make up my own mind . I left this one to my daughter's to decide .

Janus · 19/06/2019 22:30

My 2 daughters have had it, my younger 2 children will have it.
I’ve had only a few sexual partners but had the hpv virus typed with cervical cancer. I have had this twice. Twice abnormal cells have been removed, resulting in yearly smears for about 10 years. Last 2 pregnancies I nearly needed a cervical stitch in order to keep the pregnancy. Luckily I’ve always kept my smears up to date, a lot of girls don’t. I think it’s bloody fantastic this awful virus has nearly been eradicated. I know several people who have had this virus and an old work colleague who died of cervical cancer.

Jjacobb · 19/06/2019 22:56

All three of my DDs have had or will be having it.
They all saw what I went through having chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brachytherapy for cervical cancer. Six years later I can rarely leave my home because my bladder and bowel are completely screwed and I cannot ever be far from a toilet, I am unable to have sex due to the radiotherapy damage.
I suffer from serious bouts of depression but hey I'm alive and my children still have their mum.
Please don't stop your DD from having this vaccination,

Janus · 19/06/2019 23:01

I’m so sorry Jjacobb.
I’ll also add that dd’s go to a very big school, 250 in a year group, so that’s 500 girls that had it at the same time as them and no reactions. I don’t know anyone who knows someone who has had a reaction.
I know probably 10+ people with abnormal smears and the worry that causes who have told me, probably lots more who haven’t.

Froodol · 19/06/2019 23:06

I understand your concern. Fortunately I have a few more years before needing to make a decision.

Like you, I have ensured my DC have had every vaccine expected of them. Including the more optional ones like the flu vaccine.

But the HPV one makes me twitchy. My concern is rooted around the fact that my maternal line appears to have a predisposition towards autoimmune disorders, with 3 generations with individuals affected by RA from a relatively young age. Given that autoimmune issues appear to be one of the risks I am not sure whether, in my DD's case, the risks are too high.

When the time gets nearer I'll need to have a serious chat with a rheumatology consultant.

heinztomatosoup · 19/06/2019 23:17

FYI boys vaccine available at big Boots if your son like mine just missed the rollout. It's something like £155 per vaccine, they need 2 doses if they're under 15 And 3 if over 15 so don't hang about!!!

drsausage · 19/06/2019 23:18

Is there any evidence that the vaccine works and how long it lasts?

Yes there's lots.

drsausage · 19/06/2019 23:19

My two girls and one boy have all had it. No problems whatsoever.

I had CIN3 at 26. I wouldn't wish that or cervical cancer on my children and would hate myself if I knew I could have given them a vaccine that prevented it but chose not to.

Girliefriendlikescake · 19/06/2019 23:25

Op I felt exactly the same, I'm very pro vaccine but have concerns about this particular vaccine.

My concerns are;
Side effects, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that seems to correlate the vaccine to the onset of ME, CFS.

The fact that hpv is an incredibly common virus and most people carry it on them without any ill effects at all.

The clinical trials for the vaccine had some flaws and there is little long term evidence about side effects or effectiveness of the vaccine.

Some studies have shown it only protects girls for up to 8 years.

I have decided for now that dd isn't having the vaccine however if she decides she wants it when she is 14 (next year) then I would support her getting it.

ThatLibraryMiss · 20/06/2019 16:48

there is a lot of anecdotal evidence

The plural of anecdote is anecdotes, not evidence.

Sooverthemill · 20/06/2019 17:04

There were some stories circulating that HPV had triggered ME in some cases. this study debunks the theory. It seems that any virus could trigger ME/CFS ( like for my DD) but so far no scientific evidence that any vaccines do

lljkk · 20/06/2019 20:58

I'll just parked these here. From a WHO document.

lljkk · 20/06/2019 22:01

BBC World Service right now, Assignment programme, all about Measles epidemic (happening NOW) in Ukraine. And vaccine mistrust. And deaths, of course, deaths.

rockingchaircandle · 20/06/2019 22:06

Please let her have it.

rockingchaircandle · 20/06/2019 22:09

Posted too soon... Please let her have it. For all the reasons listed on this thread. There's a lot of unscientific scaremongering but there seems to be conspiracies about all life saving vaccines.
