I feel like giving up on my Mooncup

I just can't get it to work, it leaks all the time which is really quite at odds with the whole point of it - my laundry shoots up around my period.

Has anyone had a eureka moment? I do feel like sometimes it works better than others, but I cannot find the common denominator.

I cant make it work AT ALL and I've really tried. I can't use tampons any more either. I think my twins just destroyed where my cervix sits even though my pelvic floor is fine.

lunaspring · 19/06/2019 14:16

It did take me quite a few tries initially before it came naturally/without discomfort. Now I find it amazing!!!

Just a thought- but is the sizing right?

AlaskanOilBaron · 19/06/2019 14:18

There's only 2, right?

Naturally, I have the big one! I'm 45 and have had 2 kids.

I googled the leaking problem and it said that the most common problem was wearing it up too high, and I thought 'ah hah!' but when I move it lower it's against my bladder and I actually struggle to pee.

I've tried two different brands of menstrual cups, tried loads of different ways of inserting and I just can't get it to work - it leaks, it gives me an uncomfortable dull achy feeling when it's in, I can't pee properly and I find it difficult to take out, despite following instructions and tips. I've just come to the conclusion that my body's the wrong shape for one!
I think they are a fab idea and really wish I could get on with them, I use reusable pads instead. Oddly, I've never had any issues whatsoever with using tampons.

QuestionableMouse · 19/06/2019 14:27

Theres more than just one brand and all are a bit different. There are various quizzes on the net to help you find the best one.

ElizaPancakes · 19/06/2019 14:31

I much prefer a softer one, the ‘normal’ hardness ones cause some pee incontinence Blush probably like you OP they’re pushing on my bladder but causing the opposite issue!

I bought a soft meluna cup. It’s brilliant. Easy to get in and out? I can’t feel it, and like I said it doesn’t cause the pee leaks.

Ravingstarfish · 19/06/2019 14:32

Cut the stem, tulip fold and run a finger round to make sure it’s open and sitting properly

AlaskanOilBaron · 19/06/2019 14:39

Wow, thanks for the tip Questionable.

I guess it's the Cotton Mermaid for me. Is it too gross for me to give my Mooncup away? I'm guessing yes.

Yea, it is 😫😫🤣

QuestionableMouse · 19/06/2019 15:01

You're welcome. Hopefully you can find something more comfortable.

Ffsnosexallowed · 19/06/2019 15:05

I've just spent my first week with my moon cup. After reading all the reviews online I was expecting to be able to just empty it once or twice a day, saving me lots of changes of tampons. Not the case unfortunately. I had to empty it at least every 2 hours on my heaviest day, still need a towel as back up, and leaked overnight despite getting up to empty it in the middle of the night. Think I'll still stick with it, thinking of the environment!

snowflakeeel · 19/06/2019 15:08

I found the moon cup to rigid. It was uncomfortable and it leaked. I switched to a Ruby cup which is so much softer. It leaked a little the first few months until I got the hang of it. When I take it out to dispose of contents I give it a rinse. I found that if the little holes were blocked I didn't get enough suction for it to stay in place and it would leak. Blow through the little holes to clear once you've rinsed. This may help.
Also, as others recommended, trim the stem gradually to find a length your comfortable with. X

AlaskanOilBaron · 19/06/2019 15:09

Despite mine being a leaking ship, it is still full many times a day, like 4-5. I think I will probably go back to nighttime tampons for Day 1 because it's just too much, I had a terrible night last night. Gross.

Did you know that Mooncup Ltd have an advice service run by nurses? Might be worth giving that a go before giving up. [email protected]

IhaveALooBrush · 20/06/2019 09:31

I gave up on mine.
I've wasted about £60 on various cups.
They leak, cause bladder issues and for some weird reason make my cramps worse.

sleepyhead · 20/06/2019 09:41

I went back to tampons for the first time in years after I came on unexpectedly when I was away and didn't have any mooncup. What a nightmare! I was a leaking mess.

I guess there's just not one solution that suits everyone. I find running my finger around the edge to make sure it's unfolded properly stops daytime leaks (I have to empty every 3-4 hours on the first couple of days), but I do leak at night on days 1-3 because I think my stupid prolapsy innards press down too much over a full night. I wear 2 big night time towels to deal with it.

SouthWestmom · 20/06/2019 09:47

I gave up on mine. Weirdly it made my mental health weird - felt odd and disassociated all day Confused. Plus it wasn't comfortable

AugieMarch · 20/06/2019 09:52

Although the popular opinion seems to be that there is a cup for everyone, it seems that, actually, for many women with even mild or undiagnosed pelvic organ prolapse (not an insignificant percentage of women who have one or more children) they just don't work particularly well. I looked into it online as I've tried several (short cups, regular cups, flexible, less flexible etc) and none are perfect. They sit nicely and are comfortable but always leak slightly.

One company's FAQ's actually says that prolapse is one reason cups may not work/may not be suitable and basically just refers the reader to see a women's health physio.

sheshootssheimplores · 20/06/2019 09:53

For some women they will be a life changer , for others a disappointment. I suspect it is to do with anatomy much of the time as a PP said.

I’ve been using a menstrual cup for over 10 years and I can’t imagine using anything else. On my heavier days it does need changing more regularly, but then so did tampons 🤷‍♀️

stucknoue · 20/06/2019 10:29

I bought modibodi pants as well for double security, but it's not a mooncup it's another brand. Bought them for my teens too and they have no issues

AlaskanOilBaron · 20/06/2019 11:02

I slept with a tampon last night and it leaked. Terribly fed up.

I'm not very inclined to contact the Mooncup team because I've been at this for a couple of years now, dealing with leaks, I don't think that there's going to be some revelation. It just doesn't fit me.

Last month I was in Istanbul with my mooncup and it really dragged on my trip because it was just leaking constantly. Pretty gross really.

I ordered a SAALT cup last night an Amazon, I'm going to switch back to tampons if it doesn't work because I'm 45 and god willing I don't have a gazillion periods left.

officepolitics · 20/06/2019 11:06

I can see from PP that if you have any internal issues like prolapse then that could be playing a part, but just in case my eureka moments help you I'll share them! First was how I folded it up. I do the "tulip" fold rather than the c. It makes it smaller and seems to pop out better that way. Second breakthrough was realising even when it pops out a bit, it always remains folded up in a certain area. I encourage it to pop open fully (and therefore create a seal) by kind of making space for it ie pressing against the vaginal wall on that side. Just with my index finger, in case that sounds more "involved" than it really is Grin

CornerofUpandDown · 20/06/2019 11:08

I love the PACII website/you tube/facebook groups - was able to find the perfect cup with that quiz! ❤️ (There's also a swap group where you can give away/sell your cup if you like).

Cups aren't one size fit all despite what they say and the size guide is more of a guideline I think. I'm over 35 and still use the smaller sizes, the larger sizes are too uncomfortable for me.

Good luck!

coshewasaprick · 20/06/2019 11:12

Doesn't work for me either. It's uncomfortable no matter what I try.

I'm loving period undies though. I use the maxi ones at night, so much more comfortable.

AlaskanOilBaron · 20/06/2019 11:20

Period undies. ?
