Totally addicted to morning coffee, worth quitting?

Just wondering whether anyone has kicked the coffee habit?

I am properly addicted. I can't talk or look at anyone until I've had my morning coffee.

I'm otherwise healthy, don't really drink, get enough sleep, but I wake up like a zombie: 'Coffee!'

Are there any benefits to quitting? Will I be more energetic or chilled out or something? Anyone tried it?

I tried it for ages but didn't notice any difference.

If you drink a lot of strong coffee maybe it would make more of a difference though. You do get a headache to start with from withdrawal.

Pinkarsedfly · 18/06/2019 18:23

Enjoy your coffee. Why wouldn’t you?

KindergartenKop · 18/06/2019 19:32

If you're only having the one I wouldn't bother quitting. It'll only just get replaced with a worse habit!

I only drink decaf these days but it’s nice filtered decaf not instant. I sleep better, I’m calmer and 1 no longer get caffeine withdrawal headaches if I go a day or two without coffee. And before anyone tells me, I do know there is still some caffeine in decaf but clearly not enough to effect me unduly.

Waytooearly · 18/06/2019 19:42

Yeah, I just don't like the feeling of being addicted to something!

So no one's tried going caffeine - free?

I gave up coffee a couple of years ago. Don't miss it at all, much prefer a nice strong mug of tea. Much more refreshing I find.

Stardustmoon · 18/06/2019 19:47

Damn. you've just reminded me I left a tea brewing an hour ago. 🥴 don't give up the morning coffee. I would die if I gave up my morning coffee. I did however give up chocolate as I was addicted to that!

JoJoSM2 · 18/06/2019 20:10

I really enjoy my morning coffee. There’s no harm in one cup a day so I can’t see a reason in fighting the habit.

managedmis · 18/06/2019 21:07

I don't see the point in quitting coffee

I'm a Saint in all other areas of life tbh

Her0utdoors · 18/06/2019 21:08

I've concidered it, when I was between babies and had the chance to sleep in past 5.30am, I'd still be awake needing my coffeee. Back to being up at sparrows fart agaefor the time being, so will keep going. Dh ditched caffeine to try and get on top of a couple of chronic health conditions, bloddy he'll he was grumpy for a few days. He's a bindge purge type though so he's back at it with full force. Ho hum.

Cherrysoup · 18/06/2019 21:10

I’ve recently given up pretty much everything, no way am I stopping my morning coffee! (I will be indulging with some booze/chocolate at weekends)

Astrid0208 · 18/06/2019 21:11

A cup or do a day is good for you, heart and alzheimers I think.

bingowingsmcgee · 18/06/2019 21:12

If you're extremely anxious it may help, but otherwise I'd just enjoy it

Waytooearly · 18/06/2019 21:21

Yeah I actually am pretty anxious. Maybe I'll limit myself to one cup a day and see how it goes.

OP posts:
Waytooearly · 18/06/2019 21:21

Crap, just the thought of giving it up makes me more anxious.

I gave it up for a retreat two years ago. No coffee for two weeks before and none for the three weeks during the retreat. Oh my god, the headaches when I quit - it was insane. That lasted a few days and then I felt ok. But... I definitely didn’t feel better or anything the whole time I didn’t drink it. So about three days after the retreat I started coffee again. Love it to much!

Hortz · 18/06/2019 21:40

Had to give up caffeine due to a heart condition. I used to drink very strong coffee and switched to decaf I know it has a little caffeine but nothing like I used to drink. I don't miss it at all except in hotels. Nowhere serves decent decaf.

HelenaJustina · 18/06/2019 21:43

I can give up coffee and tea for Lent, but only have 1/2 coffees a day and then mostly decaf tea during the rest of the day.

pointythings · 18/06/2019 21:50

It's pointless. You'll have the headaches for very little benefit. If you're worried about your intake, try cutting down to one a day - but make it a really, really nice one. I have one mug of really good filter coffee a day and that will do me - caffeine free herbal brews the rest of the day.

Peopleshouldread · 18/06/2019 22:51

if it's just the one in the morning I really won't beat yourself up over it.

Also tea is full of caffeine as well, it's just a less immediate form of release - so no point flipping to that.
Going caffeine free, particularly if you drink more than one will give you a big headache for a few days and you may behave like an arse for a bit.

One or two is actually good for you, provided you don't load it up with sugar.

  • typos sorry
soupmaker · 18/06/2019 23:04

I used to drink a lot of coffee. And tea. Went completely off both when pregnant. And now very rarely drink anything caffeinated. I drink peppermint tea, and have the odd macchiato or cortado on holiday after a meal. If I have a rum and coke I up dancing in no time!

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 18/06/2019 23:08

I gave it up when I had digestive problems. The only thing I noticed was that I slept better.

I have since returned to having several coffees in the morning but only caffeine-free after lunch and still sleep fine. Also had weird pains in my legs when I first gave it up.

Snog · 21/06/2019 09:36

I've tried caffeine free, alcohol free and gluten free. Gluten free was the only one that had any benefits at all.

Sugar free I think would have good benefits and I haven't tried that one yet.

amusedbush · 21/06/2019 09:44

I'm currently drinking a coffee the size of my head. It's great.

Don't give it up.
