What is this tax from nandos?

Ordered takeaway today. 15 chicken wings. I had to wait 35 minutes so I had a lot of time to wait. Anyway, on about 23quid, there was a 4.00 odd 'tax'. What is this? Surely not a service charge on takeaway.

Vat?

tshirtsuntan · 16/06/2019 18:27

Do nandos use deliveroo? Might it be a delivery charge?

LittleG69 · 16/06/2019 18:39

Sounds like VAT if the total was around £23

BogglesGoggles · 16/06/2019 18:45

That’s VAT.

justbeniceplease · 16/06/2019 18:47

Value Added Tax = VAT

Thecrown3 · 16/06/2019 19:53

I’ll tell you what I recently noticed as a 3rd time nandos customer...
Refillable drinks of diet drinks should be £2.80 and £3 for full suger drinks- what they do to everyone is charge them £3 even if your not drinking the full sugar.
So our last meal for 4 ppl got charged by an extra 80p......
Not a lot I hear you say, but you do that to every table , every night, that’s a lot of money isn’t it?!?! Nandos is quite quick turnaround too, so I should imagine a table of 4 can be served/eaten and out in under and hour and half from say 5pm, you can probably squeeze in 4-5 covers on that one table at 80p each , times that by the whole restaurant ..... suddenly their making £800 a night just charging you for full sugar drinks when you didn’t have one!!!!

Cryinganddyeing · 16/06/2019 19:56

The Crown I suppose it's because it's refill your own. People would buy no sugar then drink full sugar. They can't exactly have staff policing the drinks stand checking receipts for sugary drinks.

justbeniceplease · 16/06/2019 20:03

@Thecrown3

That's not standard Nando's procedure. Most likely an error on the part of the person who served you. Did you bring it to their attention when you noticed? Because errors are made every day in life and usually easily rectified.

MerryMarigold · 17/06/2019 09:10

Do you pay vat on restaurant food? I didn't ask but it seemed automatically calculated. They definitely put through the take away as I first thought maybe it was the eating in charge added by accident. I didn't ask as it was sooooo busy.

OP posts:
MerryMarigold · 17/06/2019 09:10

Not delivery charge as I was in there

www.gov.uk/guidance/rates-of-vat-on-different-goods-and-services#food-and-drink-animals-animal-feed-plants-and-seeds

It says VAT needs to be charged on all hot takeaways.

LittleG69 · 17/06/2019 10:04

VAT is charged on all eat in meals and hot takeaway food as it's 'supplies in the course of catering' and not 'food'

Comefromaway · 17/06/2019 10:24

Yes, it will be VAT.

Years ago my mum used to run a little corner shop. She sold pies either cold for someone to take home and heat up later or hot to eat now and she had to keep a record of how many hot pies she sold and charge VAT on them.

Pigpogtastic · 17/06/2019 10:30

One of the pizza companies (possibly Pizza Hut) tried to argue that the fact that their pizzas were hot when delivered was coincidental and they shouldn’t have to pay VAT on them. Unsurprisingly, they did not win their case. I think the fact they had an advert at the time trumpeting their amazing pizza boxes that ensured hot food on delivery didn’t do them any favours.

Thecrown3 · 17/06/2019 11:31

@justbeniceplease now I have mentioned it to friends they have noticed they are being charged 20p sugar tax too at various Nandos restaurants from Herts to East London so it appears it’s a big standard thing.
I was going to tweet them and complain but if it’s going on nationally then my one tweet will make no difference ?!

justbeniceplease · 17/06/2019 11:48

Just tell them?

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/06/2019 11:49

Pig

But Greggs have managed to argue that their pasties are not subject to VAT. I don't understand the technicalities in why pasties aren't subject to the tax, but pizza and chicken are, but that's how it is and why they won't heat a pasty up for you - they'd have to charge VAT on it, which they obviously don't want to bother with.

ATowelAndAPotato · 17/06/2019 13:16

I vaguely recall the Greggs thing being something to do with the ambient temperature, so although their pasties may still be warm, they’re not warm enough to be hot...!

OkMaybeNot · 17/06/2019 13:18

Sorry, not the point, but £23 for 15 chicken wings?!

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/06/2019 13:30

I know, OK, I wanted to comment on that but couldn't think of a nice way to say 'bloody hell, they saw you coming'.

I know the point of Nandos and other takeaways and restaurants is to not have to cook, but when you're paying TWENTY THREE POUNDS for something that takes so little effort and skill, as you could just buy the wings and exactly the right marinade for well under a fiver in the supermarket and just throw it all in the oven, I really don't know why you'd pay so much for Nandos to do it for you.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 17/06/2019 15:37

They're meant to ask you whether you're having full sugar or diet when you order and charge accordingly. I know I'm always asked when I go.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 17/06/2019 15:39

I assume the price includes sides.

Because there is no way an order of 10 wings and 5 wings comes to 23 quid.

MerryMarigold · 18/06/2019 00:25

Sorry, it was 25 chicken wings for 5 of us. 15 medium and 10 lemon/ herb. That's interesting about vat. But most places just include the vat in the menu price. Not nandos though. Is this common? I don't get out much.

MerryMarigold · 18/06/2019 00:27

We did make our own rice and salad, but you'd need to get a BBQ out to recreate the flavour and it was my birthday v so I couldn't be bothered.

RainbowMum11 · 18/06/2019 00:33

It's a VAT receipt so if you are claiming it in business expenses, they can reclaim the VAT.
It's standard.
