First-time poster here, so please be gentle!

Back in my 20s and early 30s I used to sail competitively. Amateur dinghy racing, local and national level with a few international events. Not particularly great, but not awful either.

I gave up about 15 years ago, as I’d had enough of the scene: the drinking, gossip, borderline bullying from tough guys on and off the water. I’d had some MH issues and it’s fair to say that sailing exacerbated them horribly.

Fast-forward to this year, and blow me down if I haven’t got a burning desire to try the sport out again. I no longer have any contacts in the sport, but the thought of bumping into anyone I used to know is terrifying! (Although I’d hope we’ve all grown up a bit). My MH issues are all dealt with now.

Has anyone done this? Gone back to a sport or social scene that they’d long given up on? After a long break? I know it’s a seriously long shot, but I’m curious to see if anyone here has tried this. Thanks!

Hi @LayingGhostsToRest, we're just bumping this thread for you in case there are any Mumsnetters around who've been in the same boat (pun intended)... Smile

Can't say we haven't tried, OP! Smile

Here's Rod Stewart, while we're waiting. He likes sailing...

Jo you're on fire todayGrin

OP,if you want to dip your toe in the water again, so to speak, are there sailing clubs round your way you're interested in? I remember that my partner was always looking out for someone to crew for him. (Not me, tho, only water i liked was either in a bath with bubbles or added to whiskyGrin)
And he and I made Optimists from kits for the junior sailing school(long time ago and they were just on the market) and he ran tuition courses.Sparking any ideas?

I haven't but would like to - I'm actually screening on line dating profiles based on sailing as a hobby (being ruthless it also indicates a level of wealth!)

Our local club is friendly and not too "laddish".
I think if you look a family club you should be ok.

muminmanchester · 18/06/2019 12:03

Where are you based OP? As others have said, start with your local sailing club as many owners are often looking for crew.

Have you DC? My DH is into it, and is restoring an old boat with the DC.
They seem to enjoy this!

Thanks for your help Jo!

I’m based in SW London, would prefer somewhere gentle to start off with. No DC, and DH isn’t keen on it. I have toyed with the idea of a weekend course on the Solent to see if i still love it. I’m. Just. So. Nervous. There are a few decent-sized clubs around the area too which do training, so I’m looking at them too.

Thanks for the help everyone.
