Horrible experience with Flybe - most effective way to complain?

Booboostwo · 13/06/2019 21:48

DH, DD, DS and I were flying with Flybe today. I know it’s low cost airline but we paid €2,700 for our return tickets (short haul in Europe) so not really low cost and the way they treated us was appalling for any kind of airline. The short version is that’s I am looking for the most effective way to complain if anyone has any advice. Fuck off Daily Fail.

The long version:
The woman at the check in seemed to be in a bad mood, not too sure why. She had to come out from behind the desk to put a tag on DD’s wheelchair and she huffed and puffed about that, then tutted over DD’s walking aid (had been pre-booked with the assistance form so there was no reason for her attitude).

Then she weighed the hold luggage. One at 17.9, one at 11.7 and one at 25kg. She told us we had to pay £30 in excess luggage for the third one. I explained that the weight should be shared between the bags but she refused to accept that. I offered to show her the Flybe terms and conditions stating this but she refused.

Here they are if you are interested:
www.flybe.com/baggage/baggage-terms

I told her that Ryanair had been fined for exactly this violation and it was illegal but she said Flybe was not Ryanair.

She directed us to her supervisor in another desk but the supervisor refused to comment unless we waited in the queue to see her. There was a massive queue for the supervisor, we had already waited a very long time for check in so we decided to pay the fine.

As the third bag was being weighed I took a photo of the weight reading, just that and nothing else. At this point the woman lost it, shouted “That is it!” And went to get the supervisor. They refused us entry on the plane on the grounds that I had upset the woman when I told her she was doing something illegal.

I never shouted, nor was I rude, nor did I use swear words, nor was I threatening, and they didn’t claim that, they just said that the woman was upset from being told she was doing something illegal and therefore we couldn’t fly.

I apologized for upsetting her and she still wouldn’t let us travel until I deleted the photo, which was not of her. She said it was illegal to take photos in a secure area. Even then she had to think about whether she was willing to let us travel and she took her time to make her mind up. She was really awful.

For what it’s worth there were no signs saying photography is not allowed at check in, nor is there anything to say this at the Manchester airport website. Google suggests that even police officers do not have the right to make you delete a photo.

I want to complain not just about the baggage charge which was against their terms and conditions but also about the woman’s attitude and how she abused her position by threatening to refuse to let us travel.

Just to repeat, never during all this was I rude, or loud, or threatening in anyway and neither the woman nor the supervisor claimed that I was.

How bizarre! Was she a Manchester airport employee or a FlyBe employee? In my experience lots of Manchester airport staff tend to be quite rude.

Booboostwo · 13/06/2019 22:29

I would assume Manchester Airport as they staff all check in desks, but I don’t know.

Special assistance said we were not the first people to say that check in staff for Flybe had been rude that day. Flybe was generally an awful experience today because a lot of people had been caught out by the new cabin luggage rules and were being asked to pay £50 extra!

Isnt there a top limit for individual bags due to h and s. So you can use your family allowance across bags, but equally none must be more than a set weight. Did you breach that latter rule?

Just looked it up. Seems thats 32kg. No idea what she was on about. Did you all book as one booking?

tinytemper66 · 14/06/2019 03:30

Did you end up flying?

ShanghaiDiva · 14/06/2019 04:10

Sounds very unpleasant and stressful. Photographs cannot be taken in the security and immigration areas, but cannot see that it is a problem in check in.
I would complain to Flybe with details of your luggage - is the weight of the bag on the baggage ticket - and at the very least the fee should be refunded. Twitter or local paper if you want to get more attention?

WorseWorseandWorserer · 14/06/2019 04:30

Depending on your phone you might be able to retrieve the photo from your 'recently deleted' folder.

Friolero · 14/06/2019 05:00

I don't know who to complain to at Flybe as have never flown with them, but they sound horrendous. What a stressful experience!

My DS is in a wheelchair and we usually fly with EasyJet, who have always been really helpful. We never have to queue for check-in with him and certainly never experienced the horrible attitude you received from Flybe.

I hope you got your flight in the end and manage to complain and get a satisfactory response from Flybe!

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/06/2019 05:39

They are wrong about the luggage, so definitely complain about that. You can combine as long as no bag is more than 30/32 kg for the H&S of the baggage handlers.

But I wouldn't go on about it being illegal, because it probably isn't. It's just the staff not sticking to their own T&Cs.

Obviously there was no need for them to be rude to you like that either, but you have to be really careful in airports because they really do have all the power and control and you just can't get cross with them, because they simply won't let you fly.

Why on earth did the tickets cost so much? Did you book very late? Did you really have to fly on those dates and with Flybe?

I'd just complain about them over charging you about the luggage and as for a refund so you only paid as per their T&Cs and if you don't get one, you could try the travel sections of the weekend papers.

soberken · 14/06/2019 05:40

All over £30, life's too short

youarenotkiddingme · 14/06/2019 05:51

In future for people who get asked to delete photos.

Email them to yourself and then delete!

I would complain direct to CEO. Don't know details but I'm sure if you ask on twitter as well someone will have them.

Stick to facts and rules and state you give them 6 days to issue a refund or (then state what you're next step is).

Violetroselily · 14/06/2019 06:17

What part of that do you think is illegal? RyanAir were not actually fined by the regulator for their baggage policy - the fine was revoked - and it wasn't even the same issue under discussion Hmm

Surfskatefamily · 14/06/2019 06:49

The people getting fines for on board baggage willhave been emailed this info as well as at time of booking (iv flown flybe 4x lately) so i cant feel that sorry for them

But for your circ OP i agree you should put in a complaint. Id write direct to flybe, failing that twitter them as that often gets a good response.

Next time the best way to deal with baggage issues is to pay up, get on your flight and apply for refund once youv enjoyed your holiday. Or queue up to see supervisor, queuing is just part of manchester airport im afraid, its very busy

Flybe have been in the news a lot for their baggage policy - people are told at one airport their bags are fine, and that they are not at another airport.

I would definitely complain, it may be their ground handling staff rather than their own staff, but they are responsible for the contractors they use.

The photo thing is ridiculous, she just got hysterical because she didn't want evidence that she wasn't doing her job properly. What you would normally do with the cases is move stuff around so all the cases are under the 23 (?) kg weight. Why did she not suggest that - are they on targets to get extra money? They've been in a lot of financial trouble so it's possible.

Flybe aren't a low cost airline actually and my experience of them has always been good. However, there was a lot of hoo-hah earlier in the year about a take-over so rather than booking with them for our next holiday as we usually do for the destination in question, we booked with BA as we had the option.

Booboostwo · 14/06/2019 10:25

We don’t have a choice of airline, they are the only ones that fly this route and we need to fly a lot to get to DD’s specialist hospital. I find them quite expensive but we have no choice.

Violetroselily are you thinking of the cabin baggage fine that was recently reversed? I am referring to the policy of weighing by bag rather than combined weight which Ryanair was fined with a few years ago. Flube’s website has the correct policy, by total weight, what the woman at the check in did was against their own T&Cs.

OP posts:
Nesssie · 14/06/2019 15:55

Honestly. You were mostly in the wrong. You had a 25 kg bag when your limit was 23 kg, as stated on most tickets. Weigh your luggage before you leave and make sure each bag is under 23kg. Its not hard and avoids any drama.

You can't make a complaint because she 'tutted' and 'huffed' at you.

She told you to talk to her supervisor to discuss the overweight bag - you couldn't be bothered.

Despite what you say, I reckon you probably did have an attitude with her.

You got on the plane, move on.

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/06/2019 16:01

But if the T&Cs allow you to combine the luggage it doesn't matter if one is 25 kg as long as your total luggage allowance is within the limit eg 69 kg between them, if it's 23 kg per case.

When we go diving, we usually have one case that's 29 kg, one case that's about 20 kg and one that's about 11 kg and that's fine, because that's within the rules. It's also helpful to know that they won't charge you extra unless you're over by a whole kilo, so 20.9 counts as 20, for example.

And even if you aren't allowed to combine, the first thing they should ask them is if its possible to move some luggage from the heavier case to one of the lighter cases, rather than charge for excess baggage. I've had Ryanair help me do this FFS. Ryanair. You know the airline that everyone hates and complains about even though they fly people all over Europe for buttons and most of the complaints are due to people not following the T&Cs.

I don't mind airlines having rules, because it stops people taking the piss, but they do have to enforce them fairly.

SoupDragon · 14/06/2019 16:11

Nesssie did you read Flybe's own T&C that were handily linked to in the op?

Nesssie · 14/06/2019 16:18

I did, but I also read the basic guidelines which are '1 item of hold luggage (23kg)' so taking a 25kg bag is going to lead to some sort of discussion and as the other pieces are underweight it would have been much less hassle for the OP to spread the weight around.

And the woman didn't prevent her from moving some of the weight to another bag, she chose not to.
The £30 could have been avoid by either spreading the weight or talking to the supervisor, both of which she chose not to do.

OP caused unnecessary drama.

Nesssie · 14/06/2019 16:20

^ combine that with the OP moaning that someone tutted at her, and I'm inclined to think the OP is a drama queen.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 14/06/2019 16:34

Op you were absolutely not in the wrong at all, nor being a drama llama. The staff should know the rules of the airline. There was no need to start spreading weight between bags because you were complying with the rules of the airline. What is the point of having a combined luggage allowance if they're going to make people shift luggage between cases anyway?

Tutting and huffing at customers is shocking customer service, and threatening to not allow a family to fly because they pointed out the rules of the airline and took a photo of the weighing belt display is ridiculous. You're well within your rights to complain and get a refund.

I've had issues before with Flybe (hand luggage sizers in different airports) but thankfully they were sorted in the airport so I'm not sure of the best way to complain. Sending solidarity!

SoupDragon · 14/06/2019 16:49

I did

The guidelines are absolutely clear that the allowance can be combined for the people in the booking. There is no doubt and no need for discussion.

combine that with the OP moaning that someone tutted at her

No she didn't. She complained about the woman's whole attitude about having to deal with the special equipment.

ForalltheSaints · 14/06/2019 17:54

This strikes me as disability discrimination, given the approach regarding the wheelchair and walking aid to begin with. Worth complaining on those grounds.
