If you earn £80k or more, what do you do?

Following on from another thread.

Partly because I'm nosey and partly because I'd love a career change but I'm the breadwinner so would still need to earn £££ to keep our current lifestyle.

I think we may decide in time to dial the lifestyle down so I don't have to work in a job I hate but for now debt means that's impossible.

So what do those on here who are high earners (£80k+) do?

OP posts:
Curiousrugbymum · 13/06/2019 21:51

I do. Programme Director. Financial Services.

Work a compressed week (5 days in 4). Tough, challenging but have a brilliant team and capable colleagues.

Shitsandgigglez · 13/06/2019 21:52

@crappyworkthing because OP fancies a career change and it gives her an idea of jobs she could do.

stucknoue · 13/06/2019 21:52

Good inspiration, I need a career and fast as getting divorced. Perhaps I need to return to accounting, or it maybe, though my skills in that aren't up to date. I don't expect £80k though, if I can earn £35 I will be happy!!!

AppleKatie · 13/06/2019 21:53

I would if I could add up! I have a parrellel life where I’m a high earning accountant...

OldKingCole · 13/06/2019 22:00

I do. Accountant in pharma industry. Work about 45 hours per week. Interesting job and lots of opportunity to progress.

Xenia · 13/06/2019 22:04

Laywer. Earn 10x my children's father. Not all women are out earned by the other half. Like most jobs on here you work your way up - in my case best exam results in school, top of year at university, prizes in law, worked full time for 35 years, even with babies (2 weeks off to have babies in -u sed annual leave). My starting pay was £6250 a year.

I really enjoy what I do and now I work for myself so keep all the money which is even better!

ApricotExpat · 13/06/2019 22:13

Yes, in banking. High risk = high reward.

PaperFlowers4 · 13/06/2019 22:15

I’m on more like 60k but that’s for about ten days a month. I could earn more if I worked more but i don’t really want to.

I’m in sales.

Wow, @PaperFlowers4, what do you sell?!

PaperFlowers4 · 13/06/2019 22:29

I hate when people on here say “it’s too outing” but in this case it really is. I work in a very niche, very competitive sales role. There are about 30 other people in the UK who do my job and we all know each other.

redbedheadd · 13/06/2019 22:29

I do. DP earns a lot less than me. I do marketing for technology companies. Have my own business. When I started in marketing 7 years ago I was on 21k, 3 years in I was on 40k, 4 years 60k then at 5 years I went freelance and made 100k in my first year and 130k in my second.

Lots of money in the tech sector.

FinallyHere · 13/06/2019 22:29

IT project management, how did you get there

@YourOP

IT MSc. Started work in a corporate support development role, had a few lucky breaks and landed an internal promotion as a project leader.

Hate to think how little I really knew then. V v lucky to work with some amazing people who allowed me to learn on the job.

Changed companies a few times, got lucky each time.

PM skills are very transferable across industries, some of which pay a lot more than others. The issue will always be getting someone to take a risk on you. Informal networking worked for me, I know I got lucky.

Catypillar · 13/06/2019 22:31

Hospital consultant. Wouldn't recommend it as a quick way of getting a salary of £80k- I started medical school at 18, started work on £25k age 23, salary now just over 80k age 37.

@JQBased that's really sad, I'm not on six figures (as above just over 80k) but have a good work life balance spending time with DH and kids plus doing hobbies. Helps that DH is a SAHD. Don't consider myself to be in the 'elite rat race' though- my job is wonderfully rewarding but not glamorous at all.

ehsw · 13/06/2019 22:35

I do - senior manager in Ecommerce.
Well paid sector, and lots of choice of jobs (as long as you're in a major city). I love it!

Happyspud · 13/06/2019 22:37

It’s irrelevant what people’s DHs earn! Can’t believe how quick people are to put their hand up about that. Bloody hell.

Chewbecca · 13/06/2019 22:39

Yes, am an accountant in banking. That’s working part time too, I’m happy with it and my balance. I worked long hours early in my career but not now.

Might going perm help OP? So you have a bit more ‘skin in the game’? Also, maybe a non American bank might have a nicer ethic & atmosphere but similar ££.

TeachesOfPeaches · 13/06/2019 22:45

I earn £72k + 10% bonus and work in talent acquisition for a Fintech in Canary Wharf. Single parent working 9-5 full time.

Hithere12 · 13/06/2019 22:46

Why are all these women earning so much less before children arrive?

Because not all of us want to waste our lives in a souless corporate job working 60+ hour weeks? Not all of us are that greedy?

I’d rather be happy in my £30k a year job than ruin my life in some high pressured stressful job for what? A nicer car? Who cares.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 13/06/2019 22:47

I do but am unusual in that I am a translator. I mainly work in two run-of-the-mill languages but just happen to have specialist subject knowledge that is presently much sought after. It won't last but it's fun for now. Grin

Hithere12 · 13/06/2019 22:48

It’s irrelevant what people’s DHs earn! Can’t believe how quick people are to put their hand up about that. Bloody hell

It is relevant to the OP because she is looking for career suggestions where she can earn over £80k!!

Hithere12 · 13/06/2019 22:49

It won't last but it's fun for now

I was looking to go into translation but quickly saw that soon AI will be taking over it all 😫😭

MakeLemonade · 13/06/2019 22:50

I don’t think it is irrelevant that people mentioning their DH’s job. OP is looking for a career change, it’s not like only women can do the jobs the listed here or that only men can do the ones people have said their husband does. The question is really, what jobs earn £80k+? People are still being helpful, you don’t have to do a job yourself to know what it pays.

CherryPavlova · 13/06/2019 22:50

CEO and Medical Law for us.

sheshootssheimplores · 13/06/2019 22:51

DP does. His qualification is Engineering but he now works in the pharma industry industrialising new products.
