Normally I make homemade shepherds pie, roast chicken etc for everyone but tonight we had go old bacon and sausage rolls...just normal old Richmond thick sausages on a roll with tomato sauce and it was amazing!!

What's everyone's simple tea that are just better than anything else?

I washed be of the first to comment. My comment was said in jest, although in hindsight I should have used an emoji.

I really couldn't care less what someone calls their evening meal, so I apologise if I came across as a snob.

quaverflavour · 14/06/2019 08:31

We say both tea and dinner here in Guernsey but for some reason my first thought was that this thread was going to be about gossip! (Spilling the tea) so I was totally wrong!

In terms of a simple tea - ham, fried egg, chips and peas with lots of vinegar. Lovely. Only have it now and again tho, don’t think it would be as satisfying if it was every week.

PineappleSeahorse · 14/06/2019 09:11

Don't let it put you off OP. There's such variation in the terms for meals in the UK that it can be confusing hence why so many people thought it'd be about the drink. It doesn't mean that you're wrong to say tea for dinner though, or that people think so. It's a great idea for a thread too. It's always helpful to have some easy ideas for the evening meal.

Please keep posting, your post has created lots of interresting replys ( i now have a meal plan for the next week too Smile ) the conversations/ replays on here can can seem a bit snappy .But it's just because you can't hear the way people are saying things. It's a bit like when texting friends , it's easy to misinterpret things.

I eat breakfast, lunch and tea .
My easy to cook comfort grub is a huge jacket spud , half a tin of beans , and half a hundred weight of strong cheese . If i am pushing the boat out i will chop a spring onion and mix that in

Has anyone tried microwaving a spud then grilling it to crisp the skin . Someone told me it works but you have to rotate the spud often .

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/06/2019 11:37

Poor OP. What a friendly, welcoming place this is. 🙄

Bluerussian · 14/06/2019 12:34

Sam Becket, grilling the cooked potato sounds like a good idea. I put mine in a hot oven for a while after microwaving but will try grilling. Nothing like a crispy skin (I too like jackets with cheese and beans).

Doesn't really matter what name anyone gives to meals.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 14/06/2019 15:09

Sorry OP, my posts were meant with good humour even if it didn't come across like that.

SamBeckett · 14/06/2019 16:38

BlueRussian

I will stick mine in the oven sometimes but it seems like a waste of gas heating the oven just for one. I will try the grilling method over the weekend and report back

Hi OP - just came back to your thread - reading you're from East Lothian. Wonder what some of posters would make of the phrase "You'll have your tea then?"GrinWink

OxanaVorontsova · 14/06/2019 20:21

No issue with the terminology, but Richmond sausages? YABU there OP Grin

BurntSausage · 14/06/2019 20:21

Tea is the evening meal where I’m from too. And tonight I just couldn’t be arsed and had some Morrison’s Boulders breakfast cereal with full fat milk and it was delicious. Not sure why I ever bother cooking, really.

needsleepzzz · 14/06/2019 20:28

Best quick and easy dinner = fried egg sandwich Grin
Best tea = twinings extra strong English breakfast

stoplickingthetelly · 14/06/2019 20:46

I’m with you OP and it’s tea! Dinner is in the middle of the day. I’ve just had chicken dippers, chips and beans - loved it.

miaCara · 14/06/2019 21:02

Quickest tea for me is 2 dry fried eggs with each popped into half of a toasted pitta bread. Lots of butter to compensate for lack of cooking oil.Big mug of milky Lidl or Co-op decaffeinated tea .
Or thick slices of buttered toast with Heinz (got to be Heinz) Oxtail soup.
Or boiled eggs chopped up in a cup with a large knob of butter swished in. Eaten with wheaten soda bread for favourite but wholemeal toast will do.

BikeTart · 14/06/2019 21:06

Hot buttered toast, proper salty butter.
Hot, strong, Assam tea with sugar.

toomuchtooold · 14/06/2019 21:40

I just had nachos with chilli and guacamole. Epic.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 14/06/2019 21:50

I was coming on to say Hogsback TEA is a good one :)

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 14/06/2019 22:03

Ahh see lunch is just lunch and your evening meal is tea or dinner where I’m from. Supper to me is that wee snack you have before bed sometimes.

My best easy peasy tea is fried egg on toast smothered in branston beans (not Heinz branston are far superior) with a bit of black pepper and loads of HP sauce. Mmmmm

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 14/06/2019 23:02

That should read "You'll have had your tea then?"GrinWink

IncyWincyGrownUp · 14/06/2019 23:10

Leaf based brewed version: Ceylon if I’m being posh, Yorkshire Gold if I’m not.

Food version: lasagna please. Easy on the white sauce, strong cheese on top though. No side needed.
