Where do you buy a ‘small double bed?”

Finally getting round to sorting out my guest room which presently has a single bed with a sort of trundle mattress under it which converts to a double. The room isn’t used that often but both my sons visit with their partners so I want to buy a double bed. The room is small so I’d rather get a small double than a full size double. But I have no idea where to buy one! Any ideas? I don’t want to spend more than I have to but money isn’t really an issue.

I wouldn't get a small double if it's meant for two adults to share. We have a king size bed at home (I think a lot of people do these days) and find a normal double to be small/cramped so a small double would be unbearable.

I got them for 2 of the DCs from the local Harveys. Just went in and said "which of these come in a 4'?" Not all did but some. If was not as difficult as I anticipated.

agree re double beds seeming small though. I could cope with one or two nights but my dh wouldn't sleep comfortably.

I owuld have thought the beds you already have are a better arrangement - take up less space when not in use and provide more space when they are.

We thought a small double too small for guests.We got an IKEA day bed which pulls out to a good sized double and allows us to put in useful sized chest of drawers and all the unfolded laundry until I get around to sorting it.

bertie I know what you mean, I have a king size in my own room and there’s only me! Trouble is the guest room is very small and even a normal double would dominate it. The bed really won’t be used often and normally just for one or two nights at a time.

Forgot,it has 3 large drawers on the bottom so pillows,duvet and sheets stein 2 of the drawers.

IL's have a single with a trundle under that converts to a 'double', my parents have a small double. Without a doubt the two singles next to each other are far more comfortable than the small double. If you've a weight difference between the two, the lighter one has to sleep on a slope all night, rolling into DP because there isn't enough width of mattress to even it out. At my parents one of us always ends up sleeping on the floor!

Can you really not fit a standard double bed? It isn’t very welcoming haven’t a tiny bed that two adults will struggle to fit in properly!

Would something like the Ikea day beds not be better? Single when folded away but a double when out? Or even a sofa bed?

We can just fit a double into one of our spare rooms due to built in furniture but it's not a big room and we seldom have guests so I wanted to get a single with trundle. It was lucky I measured as I found out it was two 3' singles so actually becomes a king size and wouldn't have fitted.

We're used to a king size bed and find a double small now, let alone a 4' small double which we had to put up with in a caravan recently.

I'd keep what you have - save money and make your guests more comfortable.

I’m beginning to think my current single with the trundle under might be best after all! More space when room not being used, more comfy for guests. I think I just thought a small double would “look nice”. Will have a think. Thanks for all the advice

We've had a couple of 'small doubles' OP

Got them new via eBay sellers.

Put a kingside duvet on and they are absolutely fine for overnight guests. No starfishing!! But not horrible or uncomfortable as a guest bed.

I bought a basic but nice solid pine small double from Bristol beds in 2007 and it's still great. Guests (and yes, this includes couples) always comment on how comfortable the bed is.

I think unless you're hosting particularly large guests, then a small double is fine for a couple of nights.

Most important thing is to buy a relatively decent mattress.

I have the arrangement you describe, with two decent mattresses then a good quality mattress topper too. It is a very comfortable bed, and I can fold it away if needed. Look into toppers? If you don’t like the look of an uneven base, you could get a valance sheet?

We have an Ikea day bed that can be used as a single but also folds out into a bed that's slightly bigger than a double. Might be worth a look. This is ours:

We got Ikea mattresses for it too that are super comfy! I'm sleeping on it at the moment as it's comfier than our bed

I have slept in small doubles in the past and never had a problem. DH and I only have an "ordinary" double now.

Mind you, I slept with DS2 in his cot bed many a night and was absolutely fine.

It’s a nice bed and big enough for what we need it for I’m not sure it would comfortably fit 2 adults tho.
