Where do you buy a ‘small double bed?”

Finally getting round to sorting out my guest room which presently has a single bed with a sort of trundle mattress under it which converts to a double. The room isn’t used that often but both my sons visit with their partners so I want to buy a double bed. The room is small so I’d rather get a small double than a full size double. But I have no idea where to buy one! Any ideas? I don’t want to spend more than I have to but money isn’t really an issue.

We have a kingsize but find the small double spare bed at the ILs absolutely fine for a couple of nights here and there.

MrsCollinssettled · 13/06/2019 07:26

Ask a housebuilder where they get theirs from - their showhomes are full of them Grin

VeThings · 13/06/2019 07:26

As a guest, I’d prefer more sleeping surface to a bedroom that looks less cramped. It’s not as if your DS and partner will do much other than sleep in the room.

Personally, I think it’s not welcoming for your DS and partner to give them a small bed.

A small double is 4ft. I've slept in one with someone and it's very awkward if one of you is a mover during the night. doable if neither person moves around much.

You can get them from bed suppliers, but have to order them OP.

Are the comments here serious?! It really doesn’t matter what occasional guests prefer - I wouldn’t fill a spare room with a bed that’s too big for it for the benefit of people who don’t live there and stay occasionally.

Right, but maybe the OP wants to use that room in her house for more than just someone sleeping over occasionally.

Personally, I think it’s not welcoming for your DS and partner to give them a small bed.

She’s not expecting them to sleep in a single FFS. I wouldn’t want a small double in my own room for every night, but I can’t believe the entitlement of some people here! It’s a spare bed, and it can fit two people provided they’re not very tall or very wide. DH and I have shared a small double many times and it’s no big deal.

Having said that OP, I’d probably get a nice day bed that extends into a double so it takes up less room and can be used as a sofa in between stays. You’ll probably be able to fit more sleeping space in that way too since it won’t be out all the time.

Don't get a small double - they are tiny and really uncomfortable for two adults. And difficult to buy sheets for!

RedForShort · 13/06/2019 08:16

True about sheets. You won't get a fitted sheet in a shop- that'd have to be ordered on-line.

You'll have to use a standard double flat sheet which does mean excess width!!

Also when asking anyone their opinion, make sure they realise you mean a small double (so 4ft) not a standard double (4ft, 6in).

Horsemad · 13/06/2019 08:18

The difference between a small double and a normal size double is 6", six inches!!
Will it make that much difference in the room? And you will pay as much if not more for a small double.

I'd go with the daybed suggestions, it will look nicer and afford your guests a decent night's sleep.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/06/2019 08:19

I got a lift up storage one from Bensons for Beds. Its great and the extra storage is fantastic.

Long term it might be a bit of a squeeze for two adults but a night or two would be fine. They can always stay in a hotel.

ExpletiveDelighted · 13/06/2019 08:21

I'm definitely ok'ing a small double (4"), we've been sleeping in it at the ILs for 20 years during which time we've changed from a regular double to a kingsize at home, so we are well aware what is what.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/06/2019 08:22

PotolBabu · 13/06/2019 08:28

The Ikea Hemnes day bed is great. Comfy as a single, comfy as the occasional double. Lots of storage.
We have a John Lewis small double in our guest bedroom. DH and I slept there a few times. It’s fine. Absolutely fine. We use normal double fitted sheets for it and have a double duvet as normal.

squee123 · 13/06/2019 08:35

we have a couple of relatives with small doubles and we barely get any sleep when we stay. Both light sleepers so spend the whole night waking each other up and we are very grouchy when we don't sleep. We tried saying we'd stay in hotels but they absolutely wouldn't hear of it, so now we just visit them as little as possible which is a shame because other than that we would visit a lot more. Your current arrangement sounds much better. Or have you considered one of the really comfortable raised inflatable beds? They cost about £100, but if you could sqeeze a king in, even if no room around it, that would be much comfier especially if you put a good mattress topper on. They are self inflating too.

FionasWineShow · 13/06/2019 08:36

Are the comments here serious?!

They're not that outrageous, are they?

If you're going to get a bed - specifically to put guests up - surely it should be at least semi-decent / fit for purpose?!

Medievalist · 13/06/2019 08:42

I got a small double from John Lewis for DS's room. On the basis that a double would dominate the room. But am about to change for a double now his gf stays over.

You can buy fitted sheets in-store at Dunelm.

DH and I used to sleep in a small double when we visited his parents. I absolutely loathed it - far too cramped.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 13/06/2019 08:49

If you already have a single bed with trundle that makes up into a double, surely that would be fine with a mattress topper from IKEA? Depending on your budget you could get a futon sofa from the Futon Company. A friend has one of these and DH and I had an amazing night's sleep when we stayed with her.

Bluerussian · 13/06/2019 09:02

Google and look on ebay, they have some lovely, good quality beds for sale quite reasonably, all sizes including 4'. I have two in small bedrooms.

vickibee · 13/06/2019 09:03

got ours from Argos, had trouble finding a fitted sheet for it seem hard to find.

MrsTommyBanks · 13/06/2019 09:04

I got mine on Wayfair. It was very reasonable, and I love my bed, so comfy.

Happycow · 13/06/2019 09:10

Please please please dont buy a small 4' double for 2 adults!!!

2 singles next to each other (your current arrangement) or a standard double. Those small doubles really dont make for a good nights sleep !

KnittingSister · 13/06/2019 09:23

We sleep in a king size and find a double uncomfortable. We wouldn't sleep in a small double, so we wouldn't stay over.

As the room is in your house make it work for you, you want space so use the space saver beds or get a futon.

PantsyMcPantsface · 13/06/2019 10:00

Just for all that's holy - avoid Bensons as they're a bloody evil company, sell absolute shite and will do anything possible to avoid replacing it. Bought a divan from there and within a month the base had collapsed (and nothing fun had been going on nocturnally) - they decided to say I'd been sat on the bed watching TV (the TV had only been put in the bedroom the day before they visited to see how crap the bed was) and that this was unreasonable use, then said the kids must have been jumping on it - our house has the original period doors with high up door knobs on them - the kids can't get into our room without us being there as they can't reach and turn the knob!

Absolutely scummy company.

To be honest though we have a tiny bedroom (gave the kids the bigger room as they share and have a mountain of crap that comes with them) and went down the small double route for a while to try to make the room feel larger, and the difference in terms of how much the bed "dominated" was negligible - but the difference in how badly I slept and wanted to murder DH in the morning was massive. What DID make the room feel a lot larger was getting someone to make proper storage in there to fit the ridiculous shape of the room (all our rooms are fucking awkward shaped in this house) - made more of a difference than any amount of bed jiggery pokery would have done.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 13/06/2019 10:05

Two of our children have silent night healthy growth small double divans
They are very supportive great quality ends

If two adults can’t sleep in a small double as a guest for a night or two that is really precious

Disfordarkchocolate · 13/06/2019 10:11

My son has a good quality single bed with a trundle underneath, they make a lovely large double when put together. I'd keep what you have but check the mattresses are still comfortable.

spiderlight · 13/06/2019 10:30

We've just bought this one new on eBay for DS and we're really happy with it. Very easy to assemble as well.
