Limescale off. Is your kettle worse than this?

I think this is pretty bad. Limescale is awful where we live in Herts. Can anyone beat this?

Mine is easily this bad, but I live in Herts too OP!

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 12/06/2019 18:12

This is such a weird thing for SCOTTISH people! I’ve had my kettle for 15 years and I have never descaled it at all. It’s spotless inside!

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 12/06/2019 18:13

Sorry, didn’t mean to shout Scottish! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Figure8 · 12/06/2019 18:14

Vinegar in the botyom- every week

ProfessorofPerspective · 12/06/2019 18:33

Dorset - ours comes straight out of a chalk spring and into the house....

ArgusFilchsCat · 12/06/2019 18:37

Never descaled my kettle. Wales, very soft water. Tastes nice than bottled Smile

foreverhanging · 12/06/2019 18:39

I live in Norfolk and it's really bad here

TheSpottedZebra · 12/06/2019 18:42

I always use a tea strainer for the kettle water. And I only buy cheap appliances (and would never have a plumbed-in fridge Shock ) as they'll just get knackered.

I live in Bucks, but come from the Highlands, and I really miss its lovely water.

Cecilia2016 · 12/06/2019 18:42

Mine was worse than yours and when I de scaled it it started leaking and just bought a new one and thankfully no more of scale. We just had our water softeners done a month ago and really great.

I have to do mine monthly or it gets worse than yours. I am amazed at people who live local to me who never rescale theirs. I can taste the lime in the water when I have a cup of coffee at theirs, and I never very drink the whole cup as the lime settles at the bottom.

GooodMythicalMorning · 12/06/2019 18:49

This is why we gave up having a dishwasher (dorset) some reason washing machine doesnt seem as affected.

theneverendinglaundry · 12/06/2019 20:01

Also in herts and mine gets very bad very quickly! I've also lived in Norfolk and London but Herts is by far the hardest 💪

TheWeatherGirl1 · 12/06/2019 21:56

Why shouldn't you reboil water?

octopusrus · 12/06/2019 22:00

@GetRid I carefully stack a few recipe books under the back of the kettle so it's almost pouring out of the spout, when the descaling stuff has done its work on the base of the kettle...

evilharpy · 12/06/2019 22:05

Wiltshire here. When we replaced a toilet we found actual stalactites in the U bend. The kettle needs descaling every few weeks, I just buy gallons of cheap vinegar from Amazon. It never gets quite as bad as this though. Amazingly our washing machine has lasted nearly 10 years despite total neglect in terms of descaling.

ethelredonagoodday · 12/06/2019 22:11

We are in York and ours is pretty bad, but my in-laws are in Cumbria and their kettle is something to behold. I'll get a picture next time I'm there!

Babdoc · 12/06/2019 22:16

Nope - I’m another one with soft Scottish water. Just threw out my 30 year old kettle last year (the electrical connection was cracked) - and there wasn’t any limescale whatever inside it. I’d never descaled it in the whole 30 years!

Theknacktoflying · 12/06/2019 22:16

From another poster (makes sense to me)

The biggest problem, though, is that if hard water is heated past 55°C or left to stand, the dissolved minerals in it solidify as the moisture evaporates. These solidified minerals are what limescale is made of, and they can be a serious problem in the home. As you’ve probably noticed in your own home, limescale will often cover taps and hard surfaces with an unsightly layer which can be difficult to remove.

  1. Luton - 360 mg/l
  1. Norwich - 359 mg/l
  1. Watford - 358 mg/l
  1. Stevenage - 355 mg/l
  1. Swindon - 343 mg/l
  1. Harrow - 335 mg/l
  1. Hemel Hempstead - 333 mg/l
  1. St Albans - 323 mg/l

  2. Reading - 323 mg/l

  3. Cambridge - 322 mg/l

  4. Dartford - 315 mg/l

  5. Hull - 313 mg/l

  6. Bath - 312 mg/l

Thankfully we live in a soft water area. I couldn't be doing with having to deep clean the kettle.

changeitis · 12/06/2019 23:00

Brita helps.

I also had a clever tap installed which had a filter option - two way on the cold tap. The filter is basically a big brita filter which lasts 6 months under the sink in the cupboard. Much cheaper than brita (and cheap options available all good).

This tap. I know it looks REALLY expensive but I've have the same kettle for 10 years, the same iron, coffee machine, my food is cooked in filtered and we all drink just filter water......

SE London area

So it's paid for itself.

AlphaJura · 12/06/2019 23:05

Wiltshire here too and it gets really bad. I recently descaled mine with a sachet I got in Wilkos, £1. Best thing I've used, it was gleaming inside. I think my kitchen tap is scaled up in the inside though because it's become really stiff 🤔.

rollingpine · 12/06/2019 23:20

We're not far from number 3 - all those rolling chalk Chiltern hills. Lots of limescale in the kettle, but actually I prefer the taste of hard water for drinking.

I always get caught out when we are on holiday in a soft water area and I'm in the shower - I use far too much shampoo and shower gel and end up looking like a cartoon bubble monster Grin

Tingface · 12/06/2019 23:25

My water is 440. I’ve never found anyone who can top that....
