Why is everyone so angry at the BBC?

Seriously don't get it?

It was the government that said they would stop the Over 75 subsidy for BBC from 2020.

20% of their income is a pretty hefty sum of money to expect any business to suddenly come up with. Why is no one mad with the Government?

Because they pay millions in salaries for presenters. Cut their salary first!

NameWithChange · 11/06/2019 19:35

Then everyone will just say there is no talent on the BBC, no decent presenters etc. It is just marketplace where people are paid the going rate same as any other job isn't it?

You're a bit goady, aren't you OP? The BBC (not the government) has taken the decision to cancel free licenses for over 75s. They've picked on the weakest section of society; the people who haven't got any power to argue. BBC presenters are dispensible. To here are plenty of young, talented people who could step into the breach. Gary Lineker is paid £1.75m pa. How can anyone say he is worth that? AND I'm sure there is waste on a huge scale at the Beeb. Maybe they should be commercialised.

legalseagull · 11/06/2019 20:08

I agree with you OP. I think the license fee should be waived for those in financial need, but there's plenty of wealthy pensioners so why should they be exempt just because of their age?

NameWithChange · 11/06/2019 20:09

Don't mean to be goady.

I think the government stopped the subsidy - not the BBC.

The govt stopped the subsidy to cover the free licenses meaning the BBC would have to cover that money instead. Salaries on the commercial channels (TV and radio) are high and the BBC has to keep with the market rate. Of course this will not be reported by some places.
Not all over 75s will lose the free license and I'm sure a lot of over 75s can afford it. I bet most complaining will come from those who can actually afford it!

youkiddingme · 11/06/2019 20:20

Mainly because they charge a licence fee at all when their programmes are mostly crap. And you have to buy it even if you only watch Itv.

NameWithChange · 11/06/2019 20:24

Genuinely can't believe the level of hype and press comment all aimed negatively towards the BBC without the full picture being reported on.

They've picked on the weakest section of society; the people who haven't got any power to argue.

Since when were the elderly the "weakest in society?" Surely the disabled (especially adults with learning disabilities) are a far more vulnerable group. Also a group that's been hit more by government cuts than the elderly. And despite having a low income disabled adults who are unable to work don't get a free TV licence. Meanwhile over 75s could get one free regardless of their income. How is that fair?
And poor pensioners (aka those who actually should get a free licence) will still get the subsidy if they're claiming pension credit.

eddiemairswife · 11/06/2019 20:29

I'm a pensioner with a free TV license. I don't mind paying at all, because I can afford it.

NameWithChange · 11/06/2019 20:34

I actually think it should be means tested so agree with the move.

But I am really bothered about the anger aimed towards the BBC based on complete misinformation. How many people fall for the press bias and bullshit? That is bothering me. Just seem like sheep.

NotStayingIn · 11/06/2019 20:43

I agree with you OP. People are very ill informed. It was the government that stopped funding it and they passed the cost onto the BBC. They therefore forced the BBC into being the ones who had to make the announcement to cancel it and look like the evil party.

If the BBC has to pay this it would have crippled the organisation. It just would not have been possible. Thinking you could recover this by cutting presenters salaries for example is just ignorant.

The BBC will pick up the costs for those who can’t afford it, but no, not everyone over 75 will get a free license.

The over 75 rule was introduced when over 75s lives in marked poverty compared to other age groups. That is no longer the case.

NameWithChange · 11/06/2019 21:02

Oh thank God some sense @NotStayingIn !

simonisnotme · 11/06/2019 21:39

a shit load of bbc programs are quizes, soaps or repeats and american shite
no presenter is worth 1.75 million none of them especially a football presenter

NameWithChange · 11/06/2019 21:44

That might be the case @simonisnotme but that isn't what I was talking about.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 11/06/2019 21:45

I'm with you OP.

clucky3 · 11/06/2019 21:51

I'm with the OP. There's absolutely no reason why pensioners who can afford to pay should get a free licence

NameWithChange · 11/06/2019 21:53

Thanks @marvellousnightforamooncup and what a fab user name!!! 😊

shortsaint · 11/06/2019 21:56

Because the government (and media barons) have it in for the BBC. Blame the government.

And LOTS of over 75s CAN afford it.

Peachsummer · 11/06/2019 22:03

The government stopped paying for the licences. It’s not the BBC’s fault. They can’t afford to lose that amount of money so if the government isn’t paying for the licences then people will have to pay for them themselves. With the exception of people who are genuinely poor.

PreseaCombatir · 12/06/2019 06:56

I’d rather have adverts, the BBC are not fit for purpose, sick of them and their bias and their shit shows

MrsPear · 12/06/2019 07:28

I’m sick and tired of this country paying huge sums of money to people just because they are old. Everything should be means tested. All subsidies from a tv licence to a bus pass to the cheap gas and electric. Yes they are old but not from the age you think.

So I’m not cross I’m thinking about time too.

Burpsandrustles · 12/06/2019 07:39

Because they are supposed to be impartial and on many issues and crucially on impacts of immigration , unusual high numbers and impact they suppressed and didn't say anything.

They have spent millions on awful EastEnders! New sets, they pay some presenters eye watering amounts of money, Chris Evans Etc.

They have staff meals out... that can costs thousands and thousands.

And they charge us for it.

llangennith · 12/06/2019 07:45

About time the BBC earned its money through sponsorship/advertising. Why should people (who may not even watch the BBC) have to pay for a licence to subsidise the huge salaries paid to senior staff and presenters.
Its news programmes do not present the unbiased facts but spew out left wing opinions.
Scrap the licence completely.
