Why is everyone so angry at the BBC?

Seriously don't get it?

It was the government that said they would stop the Over 75 subsidy for BBC from 2020.

20% of their income is a pretty hefty sum of money to expect any business to suddenly come up with. Why is no one mad with the Government?

I have absolutely no problem with asking better off pensioners to pay for a TV licence - nor does my grandmother who is in her 90s.

simonisnotme · 13/06/2019 20:13

the bbc do have ads
book plugs - film plugs -
'inside the factory' was an hour long ad for Heinz/birds eye and i bet the bbc paid for it
and the news is biased towards the agenda at the time

PreseaCombatir · 13/06/2019 20:18

The bbc piss me off because they don’t keep their content on iPlayer for very long, but then they ban you watching clips on YouTube...
Make the fucking programme available then!
A series will not even be finished, and the first episode will disappear!
They need to take a lead out of channel 4s book, they keep their content online for ages!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 13/06/2019 20:22

I would be happy to pay double the licence fee just for the radio content. I think it’s excellent and it saves me from so much loneliness.

LightningCouldStrike · 14/06/2019 08:20

I don't think anyone should be arbitrarily entitled to a non-essential service subsidized by others, and charging for the over 75s would be fine with me if they were actually allowed to opt out! This isn't about cutting off Brenda's lifeline to the outside world, this is telling her she risks jail if she switches to ITV without first contributing to the BBC.

There are loads of free channels available to us all. The problem is we are only 'allowed' to access the commercial stuff by paying to fund the BBC first. Why? Why are any of us obliged to pay just to keep the BBC going? Why is Gary Lineker's salary untouchable when customers have more choice than ever?

There should be an opt-out, those who won't miss it can choose not to pay and simply don't get access to BBC channels. Those who want the content can pay as with any other service. If revenue falls as a result, the BBC will have to do what any other commercial enterprise does and start cutting its cloth or as others have said, use advertising.

Pinkmouse6 · 14/06/2019 08:25

Get rid of the BBC all together, that’s my response. I haven’t watched it for years anyway, haven’t paid for a TV licence for years. Resent the fact I have to pay for one when I don’t even like BBC programmes (Luther is the sole exception). It should be commercialised like everything else.

PinkOboe · 14/06/2019 08:37

It’s another smear campaign by our right wing press. The BBC is a wonderful institution but the tories would rather line the pockets of their rich friends than have a public service

hiddenmnetter · 14/06/2019 08:55

The BBC is a wonderful institution

Hah! A wonderful institution that employ bullying and threatening tactics because their funding is being threatened by free competition now online distributors have found a way round the licence. Stop paying your licence and see what kind of letters you get, then imagine your vulnerable elderly parents or disabled people getting such letters, and then tell me it’s a wonderful institution. How many people pay their licence fee despite not needing to, simply because they read those letters and think they’re going to get in trouble.

They’re a bunch of bully’s and thugs and it’s shocking and utterly shameful that they’re allowed to carry on the way they do. It may be outsourced to another company but I don’t give a shit. It’s their responsibility and their behaviour is shameful.

KennDodd · 14/06/2019 09:00

I agree.

It's not the BBC's job to administer and decide who should receive benefits. The BBC should never have accepted responsibility for this.

LaminateAnecdotes · 14/06/2019 11:04

The BBC is a wonderful institution

Yes it was. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

Afairopinion · 14/06/2019 11:24

I’m angry at the BBC because I hardly ever watch their channels / listen to their broadcasts etc, but I am forced to pay for their TV licence. And yes, I know I can opt out of paying if I swear an affidavit, sign in blood and submit to weekly searches etc etc.
The majority of their programming (and the reason why I don’t watch) is poor and predictable and I don’t want to contribute to the insane salaries of the so called ‘talent’.
Years ago the BBC was a respected institution but not now. Now it’s a money grabbing, up its own arse organisation.

slipperywhensparticus · 14/06/2019 21:12

If you dont pay the BBC can you still get cable? They cant stop you from that surely?

historysock · 14/06/2019 21:21

Another pertinent point is that the bbc license fee also goes in part (small part but still) to subsidise the other terrestrial channels. It doesn't solely just pay for Eastenders. (I didn't realise this before it all hit the news this week).

I actually think it should be means tested. And the winter fuel payment whilst we're at it. Not everyone needs £250 to heat their house. My elderly parents used theirs in part to replace their Dyson vacuum last year which I actually thought was pretty awful. I wanted them to donate it to charity. They could well afford it and don't need it-or a free tv license.
