Alabama to castrate pedophilles

A law has been passed for mandatory chemical of castration of sec offenders who abuse children under 13 before they can be released on parole. On the one hand I’m pleased for obvious reasons but on the other I’m not sure I can approve of governmentally forced medical procedures on principle. Thoughts?

Personally o think this is what needs to happen

Unfortunately there’s something that doesn’t sit right with me about it to as I think it opens up other types of bodily punishments

Far better to make this a law than to prevent abortions though?

darkriver19886 · 11/06/2019 19:11

I agree with it.
As someone who has had her life tipped upside down by sexual abuse by a man who "couldn't help himself" then there needs to be a bigger consequence then prison.

bebeboeuf · 11/06/2019 19:12

This would have been a law years ago if women had more of a position to put these things through

Generally 90% of the people who pass the laws are men. Therefore it’s not been made law

Soola · 11/06/2019 19:13

I think it’s become necessary to do so.

How does castrating someone solve anything?

It doesn’t prevent someone carrying out sexual acts, viewing material, making material etc.

Tartanwallpaper · 11/06/2019 19:13

I imagine that having a horrible punishment may put some off acting on it in the first place.

bebeboeuf · 11/06/2019 19:15

Exactly

If they can’t do that then bring back the prescribing of bromine for people who can’t help themselves , that’s effectively chemically castrating them

Also - as far as I was away from biology, without the balls (as in having been castrated) the urge is removed

bebeboeuf · 11/06/2019 19:16

If there was a government petition to sign for this I would do

Barnabyboy · 11/06/2019 19:16

Good

Babymamaroon · 11/06/2019 19:17

I think it's excellent. If a person's drive is removed it will lower the risk of them personally acting upon their feelings, lower the need to watch material and lower their general interest.

Plus the added benefit it will remove their personal sexual enjoyment from anything!

DarlingNikita · 11/06/2019 19:17

Doesn't work for the death penalty, does it?

SlimGin · 11/06/2019 19:18

After reading the link upthread I do think it's the right thing to do. If I had paraphilia I would opt for this.

Theknacktoflying · 11/06/2019 19:20

It sounds like a crowd pleaser but ...

  • doesn’t remove the urge
  • it is a medical procedure done against any consent - next step would be to medically sterilize those people deemed unsuitable for parenthood - dangerous road
  • unpleasant side-effects and resources used to ensure that medication is taken
stucknoue · 11/06/2019 19:21

If it's limited to under 13's then it's probably a good law, older then you start to pull in those where it's statutory rape and the young person lied about their age (my friends son was very close to this happening to him)

Bluerussian · 11/06/2019 19:21

Sexual abuse is about power and control, a castrated man will find another way to control and manipulate a child. It has been done and that's what happened.

Couldn't agree more. Castration is simplistic, a sticking plaster and a play to populists.

RomanyQueen · 11/06/2019 19:24

No, I don't like this either.
I think they should be able to admit it without repercussions and locked up so they can't abuse children.
somebody i once knew turned out to be a peodo.
He was a nice enough bloke, obviously when I found out i had nothing more to do with him, but even though I'd like him away from children for life, unauthorised castration is not the way to go.

Doyoumind · 11/06/2019 19:27

This is not the solution. It wouldn't act as a deterrent in the first place or to prevent future crimes. I can't believe people are agreeing with Alabama politics.

dreichuplands · 11/06/2019 19:27

This.
As with many things that seem like simple ways of managing complex problems it isn't that effective.
One issue is that even if removes the ability to have an erection it doesn't remove all sexual thoughts and impulses. There are many ways to sexually hurt a child.

ReganSomerset · 11/06/2019 19:28

I'd need the burden of proof to be incredibly high for this to apply- Americans have a huge problem with institutional racism in the red states and a lot of innocent African Americans have been put to death or sent to prison for crimes they didn't commit. People have been known to lie to get African-American men arrested. I'd be very concerned that this could be abused.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/06/2019 19:28

Will that include female rapists - y’know the ones with penises?

bebeboeuf · 11/06/2019 19:28

It doesn’t remove the ability to have an erection

It removes the desire

BogglesGoggles · 11/06/2019 19:32

Just to clear a few things up:
the offenders will have the option of staying in prison instead of the castrations
The method of castration is testosterone inhibitors
The offenders will have to pay the costs themselves

Chemical castration” is a misnomer, as the process leaves the testes intact, can be reversed and does not prevent a man from reproducing. It does not guarantee a man’s sexual urge will be eliminated. (There’s no consensus on whether the process would be effective for women.) - Washington Post

Doyoumind · 11/06/2019 19:46

So the rich sex offenders go free and the poor stay in prison?
