Genuine reasons for wanting Boris Johnson as prime minister?

I draw a blank at the question, I cannot understand why the media have him as the favourite.

Can someone enlighten me? Genuinely?

Quite crass?

We are not at war, but we are in an absolutely shattering national crisis.

At the very beginning it was said parliament should be cross party like the war cabinet to get best deal for UK.

We are in major crisis. Of course it's bloody comparable!!

TooTrueToBeGood · 10/06/2019 20:21

He has played the buffoon so long....

You really think he's playing? Tell that to Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

It's really incomparable to a war. It's a crisis entirely of our own country's making. We could revoke article 50 tomorrow and be back to where we were.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/06/2019 21:04

The comparison with Churchill is ridiculous. As has been pointed out we are not at war in or against Europe. We need a peacemaker and a mediator, not a flag waving buffoon who thinks he can just make it up as he goes along.

Boris Johnson is quite possibly the worst foreign secretary this country has ever had and the idea that he is now suddenly the best person we have that will bring this nation together AND forge a new and open friendship with the EU is a joke - except it’s not funny.

powershowerforanhour · 10/06/2019 21:19

We need a peacemaker and a mediator
Let's kidnap George Mitchell, foist British citizenship on him and get him to do it.

BollocksToBrexit · 10/06/2019 21:32

Because he's funny and jolly and that cancels out the racism, the lying and the cheating. Just what we need in a time of national crisis, a PM with no integrity what so ever.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 10/06/2019 22:26

A lot of my dh's colleagues are young, white, working class men. They think he is mint or something (I think it means cool?) Fortunately most of them cba to vote.

woodcutbirds · 10/06/2019 22:51

TooTrue - that' sort of what I meant. He has spent so long playing the duffer that he's grown into the role. But on a grimmer note, I suspect his mistake with her is linked to him not giving a toss what happens to her because she's not Him and Boris alone matters in Boris's world. Nothing statesmanlike about him at all. He's an odious, self-serving oaf whose hunger for power is dangerous and who shouldn't be put in charge of hosting HIGNFY let alone a city or a country.

BernardoTeashop · 11/06/2019 05:44

With him as PM Scotland is much more likely to vote for independence so that would be the only upside for me

BenWillbondsPants · 11/06/2019 05:58

@BernardoTeashop I see that as another downside.

BeardedMum · 11/06/2019 06:07

Love the expression A Poundland Trump.

LarkDescending · 11/06/2019 07:46

He’s a cynical self-serving opportunist who is loved and promoted by the right-wing press (especially the Telegraph) and since only Tories will determine who is our next PM that makes him a betting “favourite”.

Honour, diplomacy, integrity not relevant in this contest unfortunately.

DippyAvocado · 11/06/2019 07:54

The only one I can possibly think of is: he isn't Gove?

I'm a teacher. Give is the worst thing that could have happened to education. I would still prefer him.as PM over Boris. I can't believe I live in a world where I look at Michael Gove and think "hmmm, not the worst option".

Boris is just about preferable to Esther McVey, who is downright vindictive against the poor.

LarkDescending · 11/06/2019 10:05

Boris: The worst thing that happened to international relations.
Gove: The worst thing that happened to education.
Hunt: The worst thing that happened to the NHS.

And that’s just the front-runners! At least Truss (the worst thing that happened to justice) isn’t in the mix - small mercies.

Peregrina · 11/06/2019 10:09

Good job Grayling didn't put his name forward - he destroys whatever he touches.

dameofdilemma · 11/06/2019 10:12

Because we live in the era of personality politics, media sound bites and fake news.

Most voters aren't interested in reading lengthy facts or reasoned arguments. Easier to make a protest vote against the liberal elite (without understanding what that is) whilst helping BJ in his inevitable rise to the top.

The population of this country are about to reap what at least half the population sowed. It isn't just BJ. It's the rise of the far right.

Damntheman · 11/06/2019 10:14

The only reason I can think of is simply wanting to watch the world burn! Although most of the choices fall under that category, and by most I mean pretty much all.

SherlockHolmesPipe · 11/06/2019 10:17

Whoever gets its will regret it. It finished Theresa May and it will finish them. Maggie would have handbagged the lot of them and sorted Brexit on her own.😜💪👜

GeorgeTheFirst · 11/06/2019 10:19

WHY is the press not banging on about the two children he fathered outside his marriage and the fact that he is now with someone a generation his junior? Are there injunctions?

And he may be clever in academic terms, but he doesn't prepare or pay attention, which is why he was a shit foreign secretary.

Also, he's an arrogant twat.

BertrandRussell · 11/06/2019 10:33

Love to know how people would react to a woman with Johnson’s sexual/relationship history.

Pinkmouse6 · 11/06/2019 10:40

The right wing media seemingly loves him so it could claw back Brexit party voters I suppose...

That’s just about the only reason, he’s an absolute buffoon.

KindergartenKop · 11/06/2019 12:57

The Conservative party will select him because they know the electorate will elect him (because he's well known and funny etc etc). The Conservatives just want to stay in power and keep protecting the interests of the ruling classes, it doesn't matter to them if BJ is steering that ship.

HollowTalk · 11/06/2019 13:08

I was watching HIGNIFY and someone (can't remember who) blamed the programme for Boris's popularity. I think that's true to some extent though Ian Hislop looked like he'd swallowed a wasp at the suggestion.

BlooDeBloop · 11/06/2019 13:11

Boris is seriously likely to get elected because MPs are desperate. We all know the situation: no deal (ain't happening), deal on the table or remain. Politically no Tory leader can advocate remain. That leaves a deal. But the Tories hate the deal on offer. The logic is Boris - like him or not - will shake things up. Tory MPs are exasperated with the stale mate and (vainly?) hope that Boris will be a bomb to reshuffle the cards, somehow fixing the mess they created.
