Do you notice a difference in price shopping at Lidl?

I normally do click & collect at Tesco but our shopping bill is almost £100 a week and that's for 2 adults and nappies for baby, toiletries etc.

I'm going to attempt a weekly shop at Lidl this week in the hope we can save some money.

Has anyone noticed a difference in price from Tesco to Lidl?

We dont have a Lidl nearby but we swapped to aldi about six months ago and really are seeing significant savings. Used to spend around £90 for two adults, one child per week ( no meal planning, including household stuff like cleaners etc) and now spend around £60 in Aldi. We dont make any sacrifices to get that reduction, although obviously we are giving up branded goods for aldi brands

LoisLittsLover · 09/06/2019 20:55

Massively - for i sta9nce nut snack bars which are £2.25 in tesco/morrisons are 95p in lidl

MerryDeath · 09/06/2019 21:08

I shop between sainsbury's and Aldi and yes Aldi is definitely cheaper but there is less choice and sometimes the quality is not sufficient. i couldn't get everything form there (i think lidl is v similar sorry if i am wrong!)

CharminglyGawky · 09/06/2019 22:06

No, because I always end up with something from the middle aisles of doom.

Chilledout11 · 09/06/2019 22:11

Aldi - save 30 a week (ish) yes it's true- you need to stay out of the middle aisle

TerribleTwosPhase · 09/06/2019 22:15

Ive went from around £100 per week in Tesco or Morrisons to £50 a week in aldi, there is the odd bit of branded stuff i like that i might pop in tesco for so maybe add another £10 a week but i do notice a big difference. I do like some stuff in Lidl but overall i tend to prefer aldi.

We swapped from Aldi to Lidl and no longer need to also shop at Sainsbury’s for the bits I couldn’t get there. This plus trying more of the Lidl own brands means I can save £30-£40 on an Aldi shop so when I want to I can bulk buy meat for the freezer or something from the middle aisle

Allhailthesun · 09/06/2019 22:35

I think you might just be buying too much/the most expensive versions of stuff. Click and Collect or Drliveries are much the cheapest way to shop because you don’t buy unnecessarily.

You won’t get everything at Lidl but their nappies were good, hummus, bagged salads, cheeses and frozen fish are excellent.

I’d do your usual Tesco order, then go to Lidl and buy what you have put on your order and take them off the order once home. That’s way you get everything you want even if Lidl don’t have it and you can save if they do,

Knackeredmommy · 09/06/2019 22:39

I prefer Aldi to Lidl, definitely made savings. I used to do click & collect at Tesco, but the quality at Aldi is very good. I do pop into Tescos monthly to get some branded bits.

FaithInfinity · 09/06/2019 22:44

CharminglyGawky snap! Also I buy less impulse purchases doing online. I could probably save money buying cheaper unbranded stuff..

EKGEMS · 09/06/2019 22:52

By far the best value around is Lidl

DontCallMeShitley · 09/06/2019 23:12

I also notice the difference in quality unfortunately, and find the fruit & veg goes off faster.

Some of the stuff is the same price as elsewhere (mostly the things I buy regularly) but there are a good few items I won't buy because they get wasted as they aren't so nice, end up being left sitting in the fridge.

Even the packaged salmon with chilli or lemon are almost inedible due to the amount of salt, Morrisons are much nicer, Lidl cheese has no taste and the cold meat is no better value that Asda.

For a decent shop at a lower price I prefer Morrisons or Asda to Lidl and I can't stand Aldi, both are like a scrum, and have tried a good few different ones.

BrightYellowPostItNotes · 09/06/2019 23:17

The problem with Lidl is they have no best before dates on their fresh produce which means they can sell old food and no one is any the wiser.

BrightYellowPostItNotes · 09/06/2019 23:18

Fruit and veg I mean, there are dates on the meat.

CoffeeRunner · 09/06/2019 23:26

I like Lidl. I don’t find it quite as cheap as Aldi but the range of items available is much better.

Definitely cheaper than Tesco.

BarbaraofSevillle · 10/06/2019 05:15

Best before dates on fresh produce are completely meaningless and their freshness is entirely related to storage conditions. You decide whether an item is fresh by looking at it and there's a lot of loose produce, which doesn't have dates on anyway. It's simply not necessary to wrap things in unnecessary plastic and put an arbitrary date on it to tell if something is fresh or old.

Potatoes, carrots, onions, apples etc are stored for months before sale so a few days either way mean nothing.

EuromumAussiekid · 10/06/2019 07:27

I went to Lidl once but there was hardly anything there- dodgy looking veg and no nappies at all. Plus the shop was tiny. I shop at Asda and spend about £40-£50 per week, this included nappies, wipes and cleaning stuff.

I've always saved money at Asda over tesco( I don't work for Asda Grin)

EuromumAussiekid · 10/06/2019 07:28

What is the middle isle of doom?

BlueMerchant · 10/06/2019 07:32

Can be a faff as we definitely can't do a full shop at lidl (or Aldi). End up popping into Sainsburys and it comes to the same or there abouts.

LittleCandle · 10/06/2019 07:32

Oddly enough, I mentioned just yesterday that there hadn't been a Lild/Aldi bashing thread for a while and lo and behold! One appears!

We swapped to Lidl several years ago. There are one or two things that we can't get there, but for 2 adults and 2 dogs, we are just over £40 per week. Of course, there are times we buy stuff from the Middle of Lidl (usually for DGD) which pushes the price up. That said, we have had some cracking bargains of things from there.

We have never had dodgy meat or veg from there. Their cheese is excellent and I've never noticed the fish tasting salty, and I am not someone who uses much salt. The bakery is brilliant. The Deluxe range (sadly not available all year round) is amazing.

Go with an open mind. Your purse will thank you.

Blueskiespls · 10/06/2019 07:36

We have a lovely new massive Lidl. It's brilliant.
When I was ill a few weeks ago I did ASDA online. Spent way more money than my usual Lidl shop.

CrocodileClips · 10/06/2019 07:37

I prefer Aldi. We spend about £50 a week there, in Tesco we'd be spending about £75, partly because there's more choice and more temptation.

ChipsAreLife · 10/06/2019 07:44

I think you should give it a go as see what you like / don't. It's def cheaper than one of the main supermarkets but you can't get everything and I personally think you can tell the difference in taste in a few things.

Aldi and Lidl are a bit of a pain for me as half my family is gluten free and they offer very little so I always end up having to do an online shop to get everything

This week it is metal detectors, BBQ tongues and an indoor putting mat for Father’s Day:
