How much school uniform to buy?

Isleepinahedgefund · 08/06/2019 12:08

1 girl, going into yr 3. Current school has no uniform so we have none! Not required to have anything with logo on.

How much of everything should I buy? Realistically I probably have time to do 1 wash midweek.

Thank you!

I do 3 skirts, 5 tops and 2 jumpers, but only wash at weekends.

SallyWD · 08/06/2019 12:22

It really depends how much washing you do. I find 3 skirts, 3 t-shirts, 3 cardigans, 5 socks/tights more than enough as I do a couple of washes (at least) in the week.

SellFridges · 08/06/2019 12:23

I have six of everything. I don’t always have chance to wash reliably midweek (or at weekends for that matter!)

We have a uniform and I have one skirt (washed once a week), five blouses, one sleeveless sweater, five pairs socks, one blazer (washed twice a term). The skirt, sweater and blazer have school logo. Games kit one of everything washed weekly for girl and every time he wears it for boy (as he gets totally muddy/stinky).

Junior school aged child has 5 T-shirt’s, 3 sweatshirts trousers, 2 pairs of shorts.
Senior school children each have 5 shirts, 2 kilts and 2 sweatshirts.
They just have 1 of each pe kit item other than the seniors who have 2 pairs of the school pe socks.

DD is nearly 5 and in breakfast and after school club. She has fresh uniform every day and i only wash at weekends. So 5 of everything. All supermarket so cheap.

Shes a mucky pup Hmm and i dont need to panic about mid week washes.

Isleepinahedgefund · 08/06/2019 13:28

Thanks everyone.

I'd forgotten about PE kit! 😬 why can't they just go in their own clothes!!!

My boys are pretty tough on their clothes so they have 5 or 6 of everything, minimum. If your DD isn't a scruffy paint-herself type you might get away with less.

Two sets of PE kits is always helpful because invariably stuff gets lost/left/abalndoned.

Longdistance · 08/06/2019 13:36

5 shirts for a new one every day.
3 trousers
2 cardigans
I only wash at the weekends too.

LittleGinBigGin · 08/06/2019 13:39

I’m in the 5 full sets of uniform each camp! For some odd reason our school uniform comes home every 1/2 term for a wash.

That way I don’t have to panic mid week in case I didn’t get a chance to throw anything in the wash yet. Dc1 is relatively clean and tidy, dc2 is the complete opposite dirt and much seem to find them no matter what they are doing 🤷‍♀️

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/06/2019 13:41

Ours have a polo shirt for each day, plus two cardigans. Then a plethora of pinafores/skirts/skorts/summer dresses that she just chooses each morning depending on what she fancies and the weather. We wash once a week (Sundays). We keep all uniform (including socks and tights), in a basket near the living room so all dd does when she wakes in bring knickers downstairs with her.

Soontobe60 · 08/06/2019 13:52

I used to get 10 polo shirts, 5 bottoms, 10 pairs of socks (always black) and 3 jumpers. Generally lasted all year. One load of shirt washing every fortnight, strainght into dryer and folded. Bottoms, jumpers and socks washer weekly in 1 load, again no ironing. 1 drawer containing only niform.

Gingerkittykat · 08/06/2019 14:04

I buy 10 polo shirts at the beginning of the year as they always end up stained and awful later on in the year.

Then a couple of jumpers 3 skirts/ trousers, 1 pair of gym shoes and PE kit.

It depends on how young, the jumpers end up grubby at a young age so more would be useful.

coconuttelegraph · 08/06/2019 14:07

Imo a uniform is so much easier than non uniform, no worry about what to wear, mostly very cheap for primary, doesn't matter if it gets dirty. In fact I think I'd go so far as to say I would actively avoid a school without a uniform.

cliffdiver · 08/06/2019 14:13

We also have 6 of everything (shirts, skirts, cardigans, tights).

Fresh uniform every day and I don't have the time nor inclination to do a midweek wash.

Blankiefan · 08/06/2019 14:15

Six of everything is good for those weekends when you get to Sunday evening and realise that you haven't washed last week's uniform yet! Gives you a spare so you can chuck a washing on and have it dry for Tuesday.

TeacupDrama · 08/06/2019 14:24

DD is 9 she has 2 skirts, 5 white shirts 2 cardigans 1 pair of pumps which they wear i as indoor shoes too 1 set for PE white t shirt black shorts I wash this once a week on friday evening or Saturday
I would never wash skirts or cardigans after 1 wear unless visibly dirty, only once or twice in 5 years have I needed to wash midweek as both skirts were dirty when she was in P1-2 she had 3 jumpers
there are no rules about socks or outdoor shoes/ boots or coats she has about 10-12 pairs of socks tends to wear plain light ones for school and brighter ones at weekend

KenAdams · 08/06/2019 15:38

I have 10 full sets then an additional 5 summer dresses. DD leaves so much at school and our washing turnaround time can be a while if we have exceptionally busy weeks at work.

Jemimapuddleduk · 08/06/2019 15:49

5 of everything plus a spare set to keep at school in case of change required.
Everything bar the sweaters/ cardis are non branded and my children’s school so the rest can be bought cheaply (Asda and Sainsburys are fab). Don’t get me started on school shoes though my dd went through 3 pairs in reception and then 2 in year 1. I’ve found Clark’s boys to be good but M&S girls much longer lasting.

KindergartenKop · 08/06/2019 20:30

5 of everything unless you are/are married to a sahp and can reliably wash midweek.

Thatnovembernight · 08/06/2019 21:32

Enough for one outfit each day of the week. If I can make something stretch to he next day then I do but I don’t count on it!

Youngandfree · 08/06/2019 21:35

I have 3 of everything,I do a wash midweek and my dd can wear her own clothes on a Thursday for PE.

stoplickingthetelly · 08/06/2019 21:47

Think it depends on how mucky your dd gets. My ds will be going in to year 2, but comes home filthy every day so he only gets one wear out of his uniform- he needs clean everything daily. I wash at weekends so we have 5 of everything.

EdtheBear · 08/06/2019 21:48

DS has 6 pairs of trousers, 6 polos or shirts. Previous years I've bought jumpers but I don't think they've ever been on so not going to buy more unless he complains of cold.

EdtheBear · 08/06/2019 21:50

I should add I tend to wash and iron between Sunday and Monday so I do probably need 6 but it helps that M&S tend to sell in packs of 2.
