How much school uniform to buy?

Isleepinahedgefund · 08/06/2019 12:08

1 girl, going into yr 3. Current school has no uniform so we have none! Not required to have anything with logo on.

How much of everything should I buy? Realistically I probably have time to do 1 wash midweek.

Thank you!

When you buy the polo shirts, get one pack of the next size up and put it away so that when you get to March next year and the old ones are greyish and slightly too small you can just whip them out without having to dig around hopefully in Sainsburys for the kne pack at the back in her size...

At least one of everything, plus spare to lose down the back of the bed and an additional amount to line the floor of the school cloakroom.

I started off with modest amounts and before the first half term was up I was buying more because everything that did make it home each day was filthy. It turns out he has dyspraxia, but his brother wouldn't have managed on a minimal, wash frequently either.

The white polo shirts get replaced each school year as by this time of the year, they're greyish with an increasingly yellow tinge from the suncream on top of the felt tip pen marks. The trousers/ shorts and jumpers last for a good while before they're grown out of.

Keep a polo shirt aside so there's one that still looks hygienic for school photo day Grin

My ds have 7 full sets of uniform.. primary school so they never come home clean.

Crunchymum · 08/06/2019 22:56

It's a bit of an outlay but we buy (or plan to buy) each school age DC

  • x5 polo shirts (they come in packs of 3 so its actually x6 each) cheap £3.50 a pack from Sainsbos
  • 5 trousers and x5 dresses (again come in packs of 2, so its x6 of each) M&S so mid range
  • x5 jumpers with logos per child. About a tenner each Shock
  • x3 logo tshirt per child (for summer) about £7 each.

Washing the uniforms and Ironing them once a week makes the initial expense worthwhile and this will last the whole school year (and even beyond!)

DC1 is going into year 2 and DC2 into reception, so it's the first year of multiple uniform costs.

EdHelpPls · 08/06/2019 22:56

My 5 year old could wear the same uniform the whole week perhaps with a little spot clean of toothpaste marks or something.
If she doesn’t tend to get too mucky in playtime id go with 2 plus an emergency spare in the next size up so it can be used next year

yikesanotherbooboo · 08/06/2019 23:04

Like the pp said ; children vary. My middle child could have worn his uniform for half a term as he was very fastidious whereas his older sister wasn't allowed to put her uniform on until after breakfast and teeth until she was well into her teens. FWIW I bought 1 bottoms and 1 jumper ( but had a scruffy hand me down of each for emergencies) and 3-5 polos/ shirts depending on child. 5 shirts for older(smellier) DC.

Passthecake30 · 08/06/2019 23:04

My kids have always managed with 2 bottoms, 2 school jumpers and 3-4 tshirts. They generally wear the same jumper and skirt/trousers all week.

BitOfAKerfuffle · 08/06/2019 23:08

We have 3 of everything.3 pair of trousers, 3 shirts and 3 jumpers. Wear on Monday and Tuesday and then on Tuesday evening I stick them in the wash wear the 3rd one on Wednesday and then the ones from Tuesday wash are done dried and sorted out in time for Thurs and Friday then wash all 3 again over the weekend to start the cycle again.

perfectpanda · 08/06/2019 23:09

Can't believe most people have one for each day. I must do more washing than most, but couldn't possibly dry 5 uniforms per child every weekend.. we have 2 sets which get changed every 2 days and I do a wash most days. Works fine.

Parkmama · 08/06/2019 23:13

6 of everything cheap from the supermarket (ASDA) and try to get 2 x days wear out of each one so as only washing / ironing it all every couple of weeks.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/06/2019 23:13

When DD was that age I had 10 polo shirts (white so had to be in a separate wash), 3 pairs of trousers, 2 tracksuit bottoms and 2 sweatshirts. Only the sweatshirts had a logo so it all worked out pretty cheap. The polo shirts lasted until she grew out of them but she used to go through the knees of the trousers and tracksuit bottoms and I had to keep replacing them.

EdtheBear · 08/06/2019 23:31

Perfectpanda I'm in the one for every day camp. I actually buy 6 so I can wash and iron on a Monday. I can honestly tell you that even if I was to buy less and squeeze in another wash midweek, over the year I'd still end up buying the same amount of clothes. The polos are very grubby and in need of the bin and of the 6 pairs of trousers, 2 have holes and the other 4 are probably not far off. But at this stage in the year I refuse to buy more if I can avoid it.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/06/2019 08:55

5 polo shirts, 3 trousers, 2 shorts (for autumn/summer), 2 sweatshirts and 2 sets of PE kit.

KneelJustKneel · 09/06/2019 09:04

I make sure they have a fresh polo/shirt everyday. Their trousers/skirts/jumpers in Juniors tend to be fine for a few days but personally I wouldnt want them in the same pair all week.

In infants they get grubby, so 5 times most things make sense. In juniors ours dont, so dont need as much, but wouldnt want them to wear the same all week. When ive volunteered in schools some kids really do smell!

Infants Id do 5 x everything
Juniorts I'd go 5 (well 6) polo shirts /shirt
3 x trousers or skirts. Can still wash at weekend.
2 or 3 cardi/jumpers. Ours are logod at juniors so only buy a couple. At infants could wear tescos so had lots

Socks. Def more than 5! They get lost/grubby.

And yes ti buying a spare pack of polos a size bigger for the summer!
