Job 1 - nice hours, easy commute, able to take x2 children to school (oh does the pick ups), small team of close knit people, understanding manager if ever need time off at short notice etc

Job 2 - 10k a year more than job 1 plus bonuses. Children would need to go to breakfast club 3x per week, a large team of 50+, unsure of manager would be understanding if kids sick etc, lengthy commute (1 hr one way), longer hours, more holiday entitlement

Which would you pick? Sorry to be vague - job is in the advertising sector.

how old are the children?

If upper primary 2, if younger 1.

TotallyDisco · 07/06/2019 16:21

Honestly, job 1. The commute, hours and time with your kids will be easier. Worth it for £10k pre tax I reckon

Piffpaffpoff · 07/06/2019 16:22

Job 1. But I’m totally risk averse and would go for the easy option every time, and that’s what option 1 is.

ThePhoenixRises · 07/06/2019 16:26

Job one without hesitation

Babysharkdododont · 07/06/2019 16:27

Job 1. 2 hour per day commute, work out the hourly rate on the 10k, it's probably below minimum wage

hsegfiugseskufh · 07/06/2019 16:31

1 without a shadow of a doubt

womanaf · 07/06/2019 16:33

If the kids are little, 1. But I’m doing my version of that now, and so very ready for 2...

cshelp · 07/06/2019 16:34

What about career progression, long term career goals? Option 1 sounds nicer of course if I'd choose that over the £10k, but would depend on overall picture and long term goals as well.

HK2009 · 07/06/2019 16:35

Job 1 - definitely opt for the stress-free life where you can be available for your children, if financially you can afford to do so

avocadochocolate · 07/06/2019 16:35

Job 1. Nobody ever lies on their deathbed wishing they had earned more and spent less time with their children.

BikeRunSki · 07/06/2019 16:36

1

I do 2. I’d give up 10K s year to be closer to home and spend more time with the dc/facilitate evening activities and not constantly be rushing and worrying about the state of the M1.

mamaoffourdc · 07/06/2019 16:37

Job 1

melissasummerfield · 07/06/2019 16:39

Job one unless you are on the breadline.

As pp said no one ever regrets spending time with their children or not spending enough time at work !

MuthaFunka61 · 07/06/2019 16:39

Job 1. The ease of the commute and an understanding boss is worth more than the extra £10k, plus it'll be less stress. Priceless

Redtartanshoes · 07/06/2019 16:44

Depends on progression

MountainPeakGeek · 07/06/2019 16:46

Nquartz · 07/06/2019 16:54

1 if you can start progressing again when DC are at senior school.

beela · 07/06/2019 17:01

1, every time.

Sussana30 · 07/06/2019 17:01

It would be job 1 for me. While the kids are still young.

RJnomore1 · 07/06/2019 17:05

Which one has best long term prospects

Bigfanofcheese · 07/06/2019 17:09

How much would your commute cost for job 2? An annual ticket for my old commute (roughly an hour each way on the train although walk, bus, tube made it a lot more overall) was nearly 4k. That would eat into the salary difference substantially alongside breakfast club costs so depending on this, you might not actually see much of the 10k after tax.

For me, I would have to think about the longer term career prospects of each to decide.

Needallthesleep · 07/06/2019 17:14

A good piece of advice I had was to always think two job moves ahead. Is either better for your career/long term goals?

If they are the same in that respect I would choose 1. And I say that as someone who has just chosen 2 as my next move.

AnotheChinHair · 07/06/2019 17:18

Stravapalava · 07/06/2019 17:18

Job 1 for me. No brainer.
