Have i picked up a plague in the hospital? Any guesses welcome

So long boring story short I had an incredibly heavy period a week ago and the out of hours doctors sent me to a and e to get a drip of transexamic acid.

So anyway I had that - was embarrassed to be at a and e for a period and came home with a tablet version.

The next day I had a high temp and felt sick /upset stomach etc. Gradually got better until yesterday I was actually starting to feel normal again.

BUT I woke up the morning feeling sick again and now with a really annoying stiff nagging pain on one side of my back (I never get a bad back!) and I’m starting to feel feverish again!

I have made a doctors appointment for next Thursday -( earliest non emergency appointment ) but I’m starting to wonder if I have picked up a stomach bug at the hospital or something . I’m hoping to be better by Thursday obviously!

I can’t think of any reason a heavy period would make me sick with back pain so the only logical explanation is that I went in for the period and came home having picked up something new ....right?

Any opinions welcome because I’m bored of this now !

I wonder if you've got a kidney infection. Ring 111 for advice.

ThinkPinkStink · 07/06/2019 12:26

I've had periods where I ache in places other than my abdomen (specifically my thighs and lower back), and where I've felt so wiped-out that I've felt nauseous.

I've never seen a medical professional, I always mean to, but because it's only a few days a month, and not every month it always slips my mind in the in between times. But I strongly believe that women deal with too much period related shit without seeking medical help. So it's definitely worth keeping your Thursday appointment, even if this passes, and talk through your symptoms.

6timesthemess · 07/06/2019 12:44

Thinkpink - I don’t normally have particularly bad periods I don’t think - they are heavy but I have no pain at all!

I didn’t have pain this time it was just bleeding so heavily that I was fainting! WAY heavier than normal. In fact more that after having any of my children!

That was sorted within about an hour the drip stopped the bleeding very very quickly!

The only reason I had to stay for a few hours was that my heart was racing- it still was when I left but by then they seem unconcerned Grin

I think a period heavy enough to get hospital treatment is definitely a reason to see your GP for further investigation.

I had really moderate periods in my teens and 20's, and even into my 30's - but since I had DD (3 years ago) they've been ridiculously heavy (not hospital worthy, but felt damn near it). I don't tend to get the traditional stomach cramps in recent years, just general aches and pains.

It can be caused by loads of things; fibroids, endometriosis, infection, general age-related-hormonal-changes - but it's worth investigating.

NB: I say this as someone with hell-periods for three years who hasn't investigated them, so feel free to ignore me!

Wowfudge - I don’t have any symptoms like burning when I pee etc?

Now I'm probably way off the mark but I'm mentioning it just in case..

A good friend had an ectopic pregnancy and experienced both very heavy bleeding and back pain.

I am most likely wrong. There are all sorts of things that could produce your symptoms but a pregnancy test would at least rule it out.

I expect I'm wrong and its just something that needs a dose of antibiotics. I really hope you feel better soon OP.

6timesthemess · 07/06/2019 13:05

Lists - I am def not pregnant Grin. Dh had a vasectomy years ago and the hospital insisted on multiple pregnancy tests (negative). Grin

If it gets worse I might just go to the walk in to rule out a UTI or something.

I don’t know if a UTI would have made my period weird or not!

Oh good 6timesthemess, I was really upset about even bringing up the idea but if it had been an ectopic I'd have been kicking myself for a very long time for not at least suggesting it.

Good thing those tests were negative. You'd have had a lot of explaining to do to your DH otherwise Grin

6timesthemess · 07/06/2019 17:07

Yes I def would have Grin

Could it be the transexamic acid that’s disagreeing with you?

6timesthemess · 07/06/2019 17:34

Poptart- I initially thought that but I only had 3 days of those and this has continued on for the last week - not sure if that would fit in or not!

Wowfudge - I think you may be right back pain is worse now Sad. I will go to out of hours in the morning if it hasn’t gone .

wowfudge · 07/06/2019 20:06

Urgh Sad poor you - please ring 111 as you can get seen by the out of hours doctor sooner if needs be. You don't want to wake up in agony unable to get to the doc's.

justasking111 · 07/06/2019 20:06

Get checked out. OH went into hospital with a broken ankle, brought the flu home and was very ill. It does happen.

Jent13c · 07/06/2019 20:17

Are you peeing as normal? Is it straw coloured or darker?

Where is the pain in your back?

If your urine is dark coloured it could be a temporary affect on the kidneys as the side affect of the tranexamic acid. You must seek treatment in this case though. It sounds like a fairly extreme bleed that you've been having to be given tranexamic acid via IV so I imagine you have been given a large dose.

Haggisfish · 07/06/2019 20:18

Def sounds kidney like. I had similar symptoms with no pain on weeing and it was kidney infection.

Sammy867 · 07/06/2019 20:21

I had back pain and went to the GP after a few days (it really was worse than pain of had before but I wasn’t too concerned) and it turned out I had a blood clot on my lung. Seems it was linked to the combined pill. obviously transexamic acid also increases risks of blood clots so I would get checked out just to be safe incase it’s something you aren’t yet thought of

6timesthemess · 07/06/2019 20:25

Jent - I think my pee is normal maybe slightly darker than normal but not seriously.

The pain is kind of around my waist area at the side and back - started on one side but now seems to be both. It’s really more of a dull ache on my side/back rather than a sharp pain.

It was quite a lot of blood! But as soon as I got the drip it pretty much stopped - so I have no idea what was going on.

On the basis that you started a thread, responding quickly and in length, I’d take a punt that you’re not feeling that sick!

Haggisfish · 07/06/2019 20:27

Bollocks. I felt utterly shit but managed to post in here.

6timesthemess · 07/06/2019 20:31

Very apt user name Amibeingdaft - its perfectly possible to feel unwell and still post on MNHmm This is chat, not AIBU, a bit of kindness wouldn't go amiss.
ThanksOP I hope you feel better soon

3luckystars · 07/06/2019 20:41

She said she had a pain in her back, not her fingers.

YoungAmerican · 07/06/2019 20:42

First thought is you perhaps were pregnant (vasectomy not foolproof) or you have a lot of tissue there from eg fibroids or endometriosis or something along those lines.. and you've now got an infection and the heavy bleeding was as a result of trying to expel whatever was left there. This happens a lot postpartum and sometimes, sadly, miscarriages, etc, and you can have extremely heavy bleeding as there's still something there to come out; in some cases this can lead to an infection. Infections themselves can also cause bleeding and pain, endometritis for example. I think worth taking it seriously and hope you feel better soon. I don't think anything is a complication of TXA as it counterintuitively does not increase thrombosis risk in large studies.

YoungAmerican · 07/06/2019 20:44

Could also be a UTI/kidney infection if you have back pain
