Ants! Sodding bastard ants

ThePhoenixRises · 05/06/2019 19:25

In my kitchen, on the kitchen side, in the kitchen cupboard, front room.

I can't work out where they are coming from, I keep cleaning everything but they are still coming back.

Have use a spray to kill and prevent them but it's clearly not working, I'm using dettol to clean everything 2/3 times a day.

Any other suggestions welcome

Maybe try ant bait as they then take the poison back to their nest

dementedpixie · 05/06/2019 19:42

The must be an entrance where they are getting in. Have you watched where they go?

HollowTalk · 05/06/2019 19:44

This is what you need.

My mum was in exactly the same situation - they were everywhere in the kitchen and we couldn't work out how they got in. She put one of these by the kitchen door and another outside by the drain and never saw another ant.

HollowTalk · 05/06/2019 19:44

B&Q sells it as well as Amazon.

You need ant traps. They are little plastic boxes with a couple of ant sized holes. The ants go in and get the poison on their feet then carry it back to the nest. Put it near where they are getting in.

averylongtimeago · 05/06/2019 19:46

Which reminds me- I need another trap, as when I opened the golden syrup tin earlier it was full of dead sticky ants.

ThePhoenixRises · 05/06/2019 19:46

They are in all different places, I can't pin point one particular place.

I can't even figure out how they are getting into the kitchen cupboard, they are just in there.

That's what happened with my mum, OP. You just couldn't see anywhere where they were coming in - everything seemed to be sealed, but they were in all the cupboards. Try that bait box - you don't need to put one in the cupboard.

acatcalledjohn · 05/06/2019 19:55

I second the Nippon bait station linked upthread. On Friday we noticed a sudden influx of ants. On Sunday night we put the stations under the shoe rack in the hallway (I'm sure that's where they come in) and under the cupboard next to where they have been spotted. It's much better already and I might get some more to hide in the kitchen and utility room, just to prevent any further invasions.

TheRedBarrows · 05/06/2019 19:57

Don’t worry about where they are coming from. Just use the product already linked or else Nippon Ant Killer Liquid. Leave a blob somewhere the ants are active, they carry it back to the nest and poison all the other ants in the nest. Nippon Liquid, in the tube, sorted our ants in one day.

ThePhoenixRises · 05/06/2019 21:40

Will have to get some tomorrow, they are still in the cupboard

We had exactly this last weekend, crawling all over the kitchen top & in the food cupboard! We tracked them back to a hole near the back door, and got something called Antstop bait station, and they were gone overnight.

Slippersandacuppa · 05/06/2019 21:57

Alternatively, you can used cinnamon leaf oil - it got rid of the squillions of ants in our old kitchen, smells lovely and is non toxic to ants (I admire their work ethic! They won’t cross a line of oil), kids and pets.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 05/06/2019 22:03

Discovered ours made it in from outside, kitchen at the front of the house and lots of ants on the driveway, found the main hole in the ground and they came out of. Salt all in the hole and over the drive the minute it becomes warm weather and touch wood working so far. Normal table salt!

TheCaddyisaBaddie · 05/06/2019 22:23

I go right round the outside of my house with ant powder, squirting one long continuious line all round. Squirt in air bricks and round waste pipes.

Haven't had an ant inside now for around 10yrs.

Legoroses · 05/06/2019 22:26

Vinegar! They hate it. We had them pouring in the front door, and I wiped the entrance hall with vinegar, the outside door too, and they disappeared from our flat in hours. Obvs totally child friendly too, if you've got toddlers.

jalopy · 05/06/2019 23:15

Use the Antstop station. Put it where the ants are mostly visible. They take the poisonous stuff back to their nest and it takes effect within a couple of days.

IHeartArya · 06/06/2019 06:09

We’ve gone through 4 ant bait stations & we’ve still got the feckers. New station being opened today.

ThePhoenixRises · 07/06/2019 11:41

I think they are coming out from inside the wall!

Have cleaned everything with orange washing up liquid.

Getting baits boxes today and will be sealing up all the cracks between skirting boards, walls and under kitchen units.

They hate peppermint oil as well. That will get them to leave without killing them.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 07/06/2019 14:02

Definitely ant bait stations. Wilko and lots of supermarkets sell them. Vinegar and peppermint oil made zero difference when this happened to us.

ThePhoenixRises · 07/06/2019 14:31

The vinegar and orange washing up liquid did nothing to deter.

Wipe your cupboard with undiluted bleach. And watch where they are coming and going from. If you can trace back to the nest more raw bleach in any holes. It'll help till you can get the ant killer.

Pinkvoid · 07/06/2019 16:35

We had them a few weeks ago, I came down one morning and they were everywhere shudders. Realised it was the cat food they were after so now I only put food down when the cat needs feeding. Don’t suppose you have a pet?

You also need to make sure there’s no crumbs left lying around in or out of your cupboards, however small. Basically an ant has found a food source in your home and gone back to the colony to give them the heads up.

I poured ant powder all over the door frame and the exterior of the house, they haven’t been back since.

Somuchroom · 07/06/2019 16:44

Wilkos ant bait stations didn’t work for us, the nippon ones did. Ours were coming from behind the skirting board. One nippon trap got rid of them in 3 days.
