Can I take passport photos with iPhone?

Tiredemma · 04/06/2019 20:57

Just noticed DS child passport expired in March. He turns 16 in 4 weeks so I need to get his first adult passport.
The website says you can now upload a digital photo. Can I do this with my iPhone?
Also aside from his birth certificate do I need to send any other documentation?

We go to Italy on 19th July Confused

Yes, you can. You can even take a picture of yourself with a phone and upload that Confused

The picture needs to satisfy all the normal rules about nothing in the background, no headwear, no smiling etc. The online application talks you through it all. The online system even scans your proposed upload and raises a warning if it thinks it finds a hat/smile/radiator in the background ....

Very clever, but a bit surreal to have a passport with a selfie in it Grin

I used my phone to take the DC’s passport photos. Was quick and easy:)

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 04/06/2019 21:01

Yes I stuck dd in front of a white wall and did hers, so easy!

Tiredemma · 04/06/2019 21:02

Fab! Will save me time having to go to the booth. Can't believe I didn't notice this.
Thank god I checked today

Yes, I just did my renewals yesterday. It said they would be issues in three weeks. The photo was much easier than it used to be. There is information on the website on how to take it.

What you have to send in depends on your application. I had to send the expired passports and their passports from other countries.

One of my dc had to have her photo verified (by email) and one didn’t. My friend did it within minutes.

WhispersOfWickedness · 04/06/2019 21:02

Yes, you can, although I found the software quite picky. DH spent ages trying to take one and all were rejected, in the end it accepted one that 7yo DD took Grin

Rollerbird · 04/06/2019 21:04

It's also cheaper to apply online.
Remember that digital pic needs to show more of the body not just head and shoulders
Read the guidelines on .Gov website for digital photos as it's different

SamBaileys · 04/06/2019 21:09

I tried and failed! I took 10 different pictures, all were rejected- too much light, too dark, shadows on the face etc...
In the end I went to a booth that gave me the printed photos and a code to enter online. Then the bloody code wasn't accepted! So I took a photo of the photo and uploaded that, it was accepted- what a carry on! But doing it online got them back in 10 days.

ritzbiscuits · 04/06/2019 21:19

I did my own passport photo selfie for an urgent passport application. Even though I took it myself you can't tell I did.

After playing around I found it best to take straight on a plain neutral wall in front of a window. Got no shadow and was bright enough.

Tiredemma · 04/06/2019 21:23

Argh I'm trying to do it online but when I put his DOB in it tells me he needs a child's passport but he's 16 on the 1st July!

I'll have to call them tomorrow

I did this - like a pp I had to take about 15! I look distinctly pissed off in the one that was finally accepted! But it was quick.

Ufududtud · 04/06/2019 21:26

That's annoying! Is there a difference between a child and an adult passport?

hinely · 04/06/2019 21:33

Our flat is a bit dark so I had problems with shadows and lighting. Just went to the local brightly lit shopping centre and took them against a white wall.

If you need to supply passport photo sized prints them (rather than uploading them to the govt passport website) then upload the photo to this website and it will give you an image that you can print out at boots or similar - it even sizes them correctly for different countries passport photo requirements.
www.idphoto4you.com

Snappy Snaps in London charge about £10 for passport photos, so that site is great in combination with boots if you need them for several people.

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 21:33

They have to be turning 16 within the next 3 weeks to get the adult passport. You can either wait longer or just get a child one that will do until she is 20

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 21:34

And you don't need a passport for a renewal (even if you apply for the adult one), just the old passport and the uploaded pictures

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 21:35

I mean you don't need to send the birth certificate, not passport

Someaddedsugar · 04/06/2019 21:36

PasPic is also a good website for physical prints, and like the gov website tells you if your photo will be approved or not.

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 21:45

So:

Wait 1 week - apply for adult passport (but do it as a renewal as he has a child passport)

Apply now - apply for child passport renewal that will last 5 years

Only need to send old passport, no birth certificate required. Photo to be uploaded

Tiredemma · 04/06/2019 21:51

Done! Wil get a child passport that lasts 5 years.

Phew thanks all

coconuttelegraph · 04/06/2019 21:56

Wouldn't it have been better to wait a week and apply for a 10 year one? Is it too late to change it?

I can't help but Smile that you think there might be different rules for iphones versus other phones

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 21:58

Maybe OP wants it quickly as they are going away in July

stucknoue · 04/06/2019 22:03

You can't get the adult one until his birthday unfortunately

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 22:04

She can apply for it 3 weeks beforehand

youngestisapsycho · 04/06/2019 22:04

Just wait one week and get the adult one.... my DDs was back within a week!

Tiredemma · 04/06/2019 22:09

I was worried that we wouldn't get it back in time to go to Italy on the 19th. It says on the site that a first adult passport takes 6 weeks. Cutting it fine.
My own fault for not checking
