Shitey horrible outdoor food waste bins..

What do you do with yours? No matter how I try, the biodegradable bags always end up splitting and food waste accumulates at the bottom of the bin. Today was bin day & there's a revolting 'mat' of mouldy food & maggots left behind after the bin men have emptied it. When I go to dispose of kitchen waste now it's warmer, a swarm of flies comes out when I lift the lid. It's just disgusting. How does your outdoor food bin fare? Do you just drop & dash when it comes to putting out the waste? There has to be a better way. On hot days it stinks too.

Keep it immaculately clean and put stuff like chicken carcasses bit of meat in the freezer first and keep the bin for veg waste

TinOfSpam · 03/06/2019 20:36

It already is mostly veg waste. A stinking, fetid, cesspit of rot.

This year i will try wrapping the food waste in lots of newspaper, as we had maggots too last year. It was dreadful.

stella1know · 03/06/2019 20:39

Maybe sawdust layers or cardboard layers too, is all I can think of.

Ktay · 03/06/2019 20:40

Are you overfilling the bags so they don’t tie up properly? Could you wrap food in newspaper before putting in the bags (our council allows this)? Have you completely got rid of the maggots or could some still be lurking around?

ChippyMinton · 03/06/2019 20:51

Line the base with newspaper.
Store it in the shade.

Does it get collected weekly or fortnightly?

TinOfSpam · 03/06/2019 20:57

It gets collected weekly but we usually manage to fill it close to the top

We store in the shade, don't over fill the green bags, tie the handle bits tight and Dh washes it out after collection with a bit of bleach and water and then leaves it open to dry properly. The house one I stick a bit of newspaper or paper towel in the bottom of each bag, it soaks up the bin juice.

BenWillbondsPants · 03/06/2019 20:59

Newspaper in the bottom, don't overfill the bags so that they split.

stella1know · 03/06/2019 21:01

Maybe also waste less food, intend to waste more when stressed and busy without time to plan ahead.

lifetothefull · 03/06/2019 21:08

Mine doesn't usually get anything in it until bin day when I put the food waste bag from the kitchen in there.
We also have a compost bin in the garden, which is why less goes in the food waste bin.

LadySainsburySeal · 03/06/2019 21:17

Veg waste goes in the compost - unless you live in a high rise flat, of course! :)

dementedpixie · 03/06/2019 21:19

I double bag the food waste. Ours is only connected every 2 weeks and we had maggots last year which had led to me double bagging this year

Teachermaths · 03/06/2019 21:22

How big is your bin?

If you're filling it weekly, that's a lot of food to waste.

gotmychocolateimgood · 03/06/2019 21:24

We put veg, eggshells etc in the compost bin in the garden.

MaverickSnoopy · 03/06/2019 21:26

You can get huge compostable bags for wheelie bins so we put one of those in first and then use the caddy with compostable bags in addition.

dementedpixie · 03/06/2019 21:26

We used to have very small outside bins just for food waste and they only take a few bags. Now we have big wheely bins that take both food and garden waste

JustLooking2019 · 03/06/2019 21:27

What bags are you using? I’ve never had an issue with the bags splitting. Maybe they are overfull?

Gingerkittykat · 03/06/2019 21:30

Is it a small caddy or large wheely bin? Mine is the wheelie bin and food and garden waste is mixed. A layer of grass clippings makes a big difference if that is possible.

Trying to not put wet food in the bin makes a difference, even melon rind gets too wet when it starts to rot and breaks through the food waste bags.

oreosoreosoreos · 03/06/2019 21:30

After having maggots in ours a couple of years ago that somehow got out around the kitchen 😱 I no longer use ours. Between fruit/veg scraps going in the compost and having a dog, we hardly have any food waste anyway!

dementedpixie · 03/06/2019 21:31

We use the bags the council provide but they aren't very sturdy

DownWentTheFlag · 03/06/2019 21:38

What kind of an idea is this?? My council gives us one bin for general waste, one for garden waste, and one for mixed recycling.
Aren’t you allowed to put food scraps in your general waste bins? How tightly is it policed?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 03/06/2019 21:47

Raw fruit and veg waste goes on the compost bin in the garden.

All other food scraps and waste goes in a small sized kitchen caddy in the cupboard under the sink in the kitchen.

We very rarely fill it (family of 4 adults). Use the tie handle compostable bin liners from Lidl.

1 bag goes to the outside bin early on food waste collection day. I'd never leave it outside in hot weather!

After it's been collected, squirt fairy liquid in bin, pour on a kettle full of boiling water, close lid and leave to steam clean. Empty out water when cold and leave to air dry.

Never seen a maggot anywhere near my food waste .

If we've got something particularly stinky to get rid of (say fish) a few days before food waste collection day, we freeze the scraps and try not to forget them in the freezer when doing the bin.

dementedpixie · 03/06/2019 21:51

DownWentTheFlag I have 4 wheely bins: general waste, cardboard/ paper, mixed recycling, garden/ food waste

Bonkersblond · 03/06/2019 22:07

We have just had a waste disposal unit fitted, we tend not to waste too much food anyway but having had maggots for the last couple of years in the summer, when we had our kitchen renovated we were offered the option, apparently they are becoming very popular, I love it, no more smelly compost bins for us.
