Shitey horrible outdoor food waste bins..

What do you do with yours? No matter how I try, the biodegradable bags always end up splitting and food waste accumulates at the bottom of the bin. Today was bin day & there's a revolting 'mat' of mouldy food & maggots left behind after the bin men have emptied it. When I go to dispose of kitchen waste now it's warmer, a swarm of flies comes out when I lift the lid. It's just disgusting. How does your outdoor food bin fare? Do you just drop & dash when it comes to putting out the waste? There has to be a better way. On hot days it stinks too.

We use 30l caddy liners for our little outside food waste caddy. I get them from All Green via Amazon. It has the advantage of being an extra layer before the bin (although they do biodegrade quite quickly if the bin gets wet). If a bag is damaged, I stick it inside another one. Mostly because our food waste ultimately goes in our garden waste wheelie bin, rather than being emptied directly from the caddy and I did have maggots in the bottom of there due to a bag ripping.

Don't over fill the bags, leave plenty of excess to tie properly at the top to avoid flies getting in.

I also wash out my outside food waste caddy with boiling water every time I empty it.

I think a little and often cleaning approach works better for me than waiting until it is festering.

I have had simalar problems as OP , I used to have a kitchen caddy and a outside bin that was about 10/15 litres, that got nicked so I asked the council for a new one and they sent a new green bin the same size as a large wheelie bin ( so bigger than my black bin ) this gets emptied twice a month, it's way to big for me it would take 6 months to fill.
I do not have a garden so composting is not possible,

We get free caddy bags but they are so thin that I have to treble bag !
Does anyone know if i can buy bin bags big enough for my wheelie bin .

We don't have a garden, so composting isn't an option.

We wash the bin after each weekly collection.

It's not a big bin, the kitchen caddy is about 30cm tall, and the outside one is about 45cm.

We make sure everything coing in is cold, and as dry as possible.

After the great maggot infestation of 2016 I swore to DH we'd get a waste disposal unit fitted, and when we moved last year it was the first thing fitted in the new kitchen. £100 for the unit, £40 for the plumber. Best thing I've ever had.

We compost & have a dog, so the only thing that ever goes in our food waste caddy is bones (& then usually only after making stock).

Urggh the food waste bin is the bane of my life. We are a family of 6 who eat lots of veg, just the veg prep for a roast can fill the kitchen bin especially as I love cauliflower! Two DC are also fussy buggers and will generally leave food on their plate so I probably fill the kitchen bin daily. Absolutely hate emptying it. Tried putting newspaper in the outside one but left with wet paper stuck to the bottom of the bin and it still stinks. We generally chuck some bleach and water in it and leave it to soak for the day when it's emptied especially in summer.

We only have a 30ft by 30ft garden so no room for a stinky compost heap which we really could do with.
