Someone's just whispered my name and I'm home alone!

I'm shaking.

Was in the kitchen and clear as day someone just whispered my name.

I don't want to tell anyone in real life as they won't believe me.

Doubt anyone on here will believe me either to be fair.

Just wanted to tell someone as it's scared me.

I know it's scary, but auditory hallucinations are actually pretty common, even if you're totally sane. Are you tired or stressed or run down?

dazzlingdeborahrose · 02/06/2019 15:59

Poor you. You must be really shaken. I've had that happen to me too. I don't know if it's just an auditory hallucination or the mind playing tricks but it's startling when it happens.
Have a sit down, grab a coffee and do something to distract yourself.
Are you in a new house? Sometimes that unsettles you.
When you feel better, I'll tell you about the time it happened to me.

Processedpea · 02/06/2019 15:59

Did you answer?

BertrandRussell · 02/06/2019 16:00

Right. Make a cup of tea. Take deep breaths. Nobody whispered your name. You heard a sound and your brain “pattern recognized” it into your name. We are programmed to do things like that- it’s part of our ancient “monkey brain” that kept us safe from predators. Everything’s fine.

FoxSquadKitten · 02/06/2019 16:02

I sometimes hear my DM yelling calling my name - she's been dead nearly 20 years. It is weird but I suppose it's just my ears playing tricks on me.
You'll be fine.

SystolicSyster · 02/06/2019 16:02

I get this sometimes, too. Mind playing tricks, or a hallucination, I'm not sure either. (It can't be ghosts. Any potential ghosts in my house would be local and probably not that international, and would not be able to pronounce my name!) If you're scared of it happening again, put the TV on or some other distraction noise.

rosydreams · 02/06/2019 16:05

before freaking out ask yourself

am i tired
do i feel ill
is it windy
is something plugged in making a funny noise

before we consider the abnormal consider the normal first and only once you have ruled out all logical possibility's can you safely say well that was strange .

SparklyMagpie · 02/06/2019 16:06

I've had this happen a number of times. Most recently, my DS was in bed and I was downstairs and clear as day kept hearing him shouting me, it's only when I ran up the stairs within seconds he was sound asleep.

But then I think I'm just used to the calls of "MUMMMMMMY" throughout the day my brain cant get used to finally having some peace and quiet in the evening 😂

SallyWD · 02/06/2019 16:09

I've had someone whisper my name too! Very clearly, no mistaking it. I was completely alone so assume it was a hallucination.

benfoldsfive · 02/06/2019 16:12

I often hear someone knocking in my door. Just monkey brain as someone before me said.

Livedandlearned · 02/06/2019 16:14

I've heard someone say my name as I'm falling asleep. I don't think it was real, more like something that happens when I'm stressed.

insidev · 02/06/2019 16:18

I've had this quite a few times, I'm still in one piece. Don't worry OP! Have a nice cup of tea and don't overthink it SmileBrew

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/06/2019 16:22

I hear the doorbell at work (secure location) all the time when there's no one there.Don't worry, OP, it's just your mind playing silly buggers with you...

Dollywilde · 02/06/2019 16:23

Sympathies, I get these when I’m falling asleep. Doesn’t bug me now but when it started I was ShockConfused

RainbowCake · 02/06/2019 16:24

I would say it's an auditory hallucination as well.
Last night as I was trying to get to sleep I heard DP shouts DS's name as though shouting upstairs, clear as a bell. Only problem with that is that DP was in the pub...
It did give me a bit of a start!

FloatingthroughSpace · 02/06/2019 16:29

I heard someone say "this is the moment you saved her life" in my ear as I closed the car door to take my DD to hospital. She had a "stomach bug" but I didn't like how she wasn't rallying with calpol. She would have died within 48 hours from a blocked bowel had I not taken her in. I found it startling but quite comforting.

I figure that we humans don't yet have an understanding of even 1 percent of all the knowledge and wisdom in the universe, so it's ok if sometimes we can't explain things.

tullebelle · 02/06/2019 16:30

Thanks everyone.

It's happened to me a few times before and I made excuses as to what it could have been.

I am very tired but there were no other sounds at that time. It was very clear and made me feel very odd.

@dazzlingdeborahrose I am happy to hear about when it happened to you if you wanted to tell us.

LimitIsUp · 02/06/2019 16:58

I want to hear deborahrose's story too

ivykaty44 · 02/06/2019 16:59

It happens sometimes, I used to get it at work in an empty room a lot and sometimes at home - it’s nothing to worry about

IvanaPee · 02/06/2019 17:01

Nobody whispered your name. Honestly.

Have a cup of tea and switch on something mind-numbing! Brew

wornoutboots · 02/06/2019 17:02

I once heard my dear grandmother calling me, followed by "get your baby" and I ran up the stairs just in time to stopfurniture being pulled over onto him (yes, it should have been fixed to the wall. He couldn't get out of the cot, or so I'd thought, so we thought we had time enough to get around to it)

wornoutboots · 02/06/2019 17:03

I meant "dead" though she was very dear too!

ALongHardWinter · 02/06/2019 17:08

Like a previous poster,I've experienced this occasionally just as I'm falling asleep. No idea why it happens,I don't recall being particularly stressed at the time. I've also woken up in the night convincd that I've heard someone knocking on the front door. But of course, when I get up to check, there's no one there. The mind can play funny tricks on you sometimes.

ALongHardWinter · 02/06/2019 17:12

dazzlingdeborahrose please tell us your story!

IStillMissBlockbuster · 02/06/2019 17:14

Hallucinations as you are falling asleep are called Hypnogogic. Hallucinations as you wake are Hypnopompic. I have heard music as I was falling asleep.

Hallucinations that are like what you experienced OP, are actually far more common than you think. Nothing to be afraid of, a bit of a brain fart.
