Preston Vs Edinburgh

PrestonVsEdinburgh · 02/06/2019 08:51

Hi NC as potentially outing. Looking for advice. I currently work in Edinburgh and absolutely love it here, trying to buy at the moment but the housing market is very active and it seems almost impossible to get anything without significant additional savings when flats are going for 20k over the home report Sad I work in a job that I love but it is very stressful and i’m Struggling at the moment due to leadership/management problems.

I’ve been approached by another employer based in Preston and am considering a move there to improve my overall quality of life. Now I know nothing about Preston except that it rains a lot (hate wet weather). I’m going there to visit in a couple of weeks but would like your thoughts on Edinburgh vs Preston as a place to live. I have dogs so good walks/green space is important (brilliant in Edinburgh) I like beautiful architecture, big open skies, and easy access to countryside. Plus city comforts - bars, cinemas etc. I’m also quite active so a decent climbing wall, running club etc would be good.

so wise MNetters if you know Preston/Edinburgh at all can you tell me what you think? And which bits of Preston are nice?

If you plan on living elsewhere and driving in please check how long it takes in rush hour(s) my experience is once you hit the outskirts it's very slow going!

RCheshire · 03/06/2019 18:14

I'd agree that looking at villages/market towns may bear better fruit. E.g. Garstang in the North, Croston/Rufford if heading toward Southport/Liverpool. Lots of nice villages if that's what your after. Some such as Croston are on a railway line (albeit limited)

Genderfree · 03/06/2019 18:19

Your Wong Cheshire however you think what you want

Ooogetyooo · 03/06/2019 18:29

Preston town centre is rough and even rougher at night .
Plenty of nice outlying villages that you could commute from .

BedraggledBlitz · 03/06/2019 18:30

I get the feeling that your stressful job is the big push in this. Surely job prospects will be better in Edinburgh than in Preston? I would stay in Edinburgh and look for another job.

NC4Now · 03/06/2019 18:33

@surlycurly what was it about Preston that made you unhappy? And when were you here? Could it be a case of wrong place, wrong time?

LetsSplashMummy · 03/06/2019 18:46

Is there really nowhere else, in the middle that you could look for a job? By in the middle, I mean between "lovely surroundings, poky flat," and "not very nice surroundings, large house." I don't mean middle geographically.

For example, Lincoln, St Andrews...

NC4Now · 03/06/2019 19:09

That's my point though LetsSplashMummy - Preston is the middle!

There are much bleaker places to be - areas with far more deprivation, poor performing schools (OP said this isn't an issue so it's not really been discussed), high levels of crime etc.

Maybe its all relative. I'm not going to start slagging off other areas, but it's really unfair to paint Preston out to be some Dickensian slum because it's just not. There's a real spirit of optimism and a lot of people working very hard to achieve it.

YesQueen · 03/06/2019 19:11

@NC4Now it's such a shit slum town, what with the brand new Porsche dealership Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2019 19:16

what with the brand new Porsche dealership
I must admit, every time I see that I'm thinking WTF - is there really the demand, especially at the moment?

Mind you, I'm equally baffled who all the new-build houses are for. Someone must want to come and live hereabouts!

NC4Now · 03/06/2019 19:17

Exactly YesQueen Grin.

I was thinking that when I saw a rather lovely Porsche driving through Winckley Square today in the sunshine. I was like, 'god, what a shithole'.

Then I went to Booths to pick up a few bits for tea. What a dive, eh?

NC4Now · 03/06/2019 19:18

Probably half of Edinburgh after this thread Grin.

RandomMess · 03/06/2019 19:20

I think the new builds are for People that can't afford to live in Manchester Sad

YesQueen · 03/06/2019 19:21

@ErrolTheDragon there is, I work for a luxury car brand and we are always busy

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/06/2019 19:23

This thread is quite entertaining, particularly the posters who are singing the praises of Preston with such determined gusto. And then the posters who think Preston is Lancashire's answer to Guernica. As always in cases like this, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I've never come across Preston being compared to Edinburgh before. There may be a reason for that. Wink. Someone said apples and oranges but I don't think you're even comparing two fruits. Apples and broccoli perhaps.

I grew up near Preston. I moved away when I went to university and never moved back although all my family are still in Lancs. What always strikes me when I'm back visiting is the single-minded belief that the locals have that their village, town, local restaurant, shop, etc is a-maz-ing. You're seeing this now with some posts on this thread.

The challenge comes that when you've lived in a big city you tend to be a little harder to impress. Because you've been spoiled for choice in the city. There are pockets of excellence in central Lancs. In particular I lament the sad demise of my favourite chip shop in Blackburn who did the best ever fish, chips and gravy. Sad But I find that a lot of things people rave about turn out to be average or (sadly) disappointing. I know I've been spoiled. I'm wondering if this is the same for you too OP? You love Edinburgh. You're contemplating leaving because of property prices and work politics rather than because you've fallen out of love with Edinburgh. Do you really think you could be happy in Preston? You can't move and just replicate your Edinburgh life (which is what it sounds like you want to do). They're very different places.

Coming from Edinburgh, you won't find the Preston weather too traumatic. To be honest, I find Edinburgh grey and depressing (I think it's all that granite) but Preston is just mild and damp. I liked the comment someone made about anoraks. It always makes me laugh when I'm on a train from London going to visit clients in Yorkshire and as we get to the Midlands, everyone who gets on the train after that has an anorak. And sensible boots. When I go back home to visit, the dampness is what strikes me first. Especially in autumn/winter/spring. The penny drops that I am totally inappropriately dressed and I look out of place (even though I had thought about what to wear before leaving home!). I just always forget how wet it is. Of course that's why the countryside is so beautiful and green, and I still always have a little cry when I say goodbye again to those green hills.

I think you need to give some serious thought to your reasons for moving. You will need to start a new life in Preston rather than replicate your old one. Are you willing to do that? Will you regret it for the sake of £20k?

Finally, I agree with the majority saying don't live in Preston centre. You'll be disappointed. People saying "oh but Winckley Square's lovely". It's ONE square. It's been considered the nice bit of Preston for decades. But it's just one small square. I used to walk to work through Winckley Square every morning. It's nothing special. At all. Although compared to some parts of Preston I can understand why some people seem to think it's the equivalent of Heriot Row. Don't fall for that one OP. I think Lancaster would suit you better. Or if you want city centre living, maybe even consider commuting from Manchester. Still cheaper than Edinburgh and you'd be going against the 'popular' direction during rush hour. If you take the job, maybe rent for a while in Manchester while you get more familiar with Preston and central Lancs.

pentago · 03/06/2019 19:33

RCheshire thanks. They did get the wrong end of the stick. Thought I was going mad for a minute. I wasn't having a dig, just suggesting an alternative with reasons 🤷🏽‍♀️ think I'm flogging a dead horse though.

As for Northerners, well, I'm from Keighley if you want to talk about shitholes so I'm as northern a lass as they come. And proud!

RandomMess · 03/06/2019 19:39

DD works in Lancaster and Preston and is young enough to know the night life. She says they are both as rough as each other but Preston just has more people 🤷🏽‍♀️

NC4Now · 03/06/2019 19:55

100milesanhour I left to go to uni in the mid 90s and swore I’d never come back. I left again to do a post-grad and again, vowed off the place.
I spent the first 10 years I was back looking for a way to leave to get the bright lights and big city vibe I’d grown to love elsewhere. But Preston’s changed and I’ve changed - and my feelings about the place have definitely changed.
It’s not mindlessly singing the praises. I’ve seen a lot of places and lived through a lot of changes - I’m just incredibly proud of how my city’s coming on.

Genderfree · 03/06/2019 21:13

Off course you can’t compare Edinburgh to Preston. It’s the extremely negative posts about Preston that piss me off, especially those that make it look like it’s a really racist place. Racism is everywhere but the exaggerations about Preston arevjust wrong. We aren’t some 1950s mini English version of Mississippi and we aren’t some dark dark satanic mill type place either. There’s some beautiful buildings and beautiful countryside. Oh and yep we have a good university with guess what, shock horror, a history Of international students.

Genderfree · 03/06/2019 21:24

My children are also the right age to comment on town centres at night. Nah they think all town centres are rough but some are on a bigger scale. Brighter lights according to them just means more dangerous and rougher. A nice trendy restaurant in the city just means a bigger bill and more of a treat.

SecretEstateAgent · 03/06/2019 21:51

Hands up if you want a Preston meet to help OP locate some gin Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2019 22:03

maybe rent for a while in Manchester

Not with dogs, surely?

RandomMess · 03/06/2019 22:04

Sounds good but I'll have to get the last bus home at the ridiculous early 10:30 I think it is WinkHmm

pentago · 03/06/2019 22:14

Might be able to share a taxi with you Random Grin

There's always a good old afternoon sesh though

Genderfree · 03/06/2019 22:41

Yes because all people from Preston are alcoholics. Loads of afternoon sechs because we’re all unemployed
