4 year old wants to eat loads of chorizo

My 4 year old would eat chorizo all day if I’d let him. He tried it on holiday and now it’s his favourite thing. For breakfast Hmm.

How much is bad for him and what else would he like if he likes this?

A small bit twice a week is fine. But no, it’s not good to give it to him daily just because he likes it.

Grumpbum123 · 02/06/2019 07:28

Sounds like my child would eat salami, chorizo, feta, Halloumi all day long. However, it’s not good for him so I treat it like I do crisps and chocolate, it’s an occasional treat

cranetime · 02/06/2019 07:37

Thanks.

It was the continental breakfast in the hotel that did it! He tried a bit of everything and had never looked back.

He would prefer it to chocolate and crisps!

It can be a weekend thing. Thanks all.

I used to make chorizo with my grandma 😀
It is fine but quite salty. Maybe cut really thin slices and I am sure the novelty might eventually run off 😄

waterandmilk · 02/06/2019 07:40

And chorizo is better than chocolate and crips anyway. Pork , paprika, garlic and salt. Sure all shop bought stuff has additives.

Check the salt content of the one you buy and do a calculation.

BertieBotts · 02/06/2019 07:42

4 year olds can have up to 3g of salt daily so I'd look at salt intake primarily.

cranetime · 02/06/2019 07:42

Ooh yes will check the salt.

Also, just been looking at some recipes where they chorizo is crumbled into stew type dishes. I could increase his veggie intake that way!

Buy really good chorizo without nitrites and I wouldn’t worry too much then. It’s still salty, but it can be eaten for weekend breakfast without much fretting.

funmummy48 · 02/06/2019 07:45

It may be the paprika flavour that he likes? Try a few recipes with paprika in them to see if he likes them. We like chips with paprika sprinkled over thrm.

cranetime · 02/06/2019 07:45

I just bought it from M&S. How do I find out about the nitrates?

OP posts:
cranetime · 02/06/2019 07:53

Google is my friend. Waitrose do a nitrate free one, the sausage uncooked type. Looking for a cooked slice nitrate free one now.

I do a lentil thing with tiny bits of chorizo to add flavour - try that?

Kabloom · 02/06/2019 08:11

I agree with pp get one with limited additives. Unearthed brand has salt only. Then use it like a condiment. I’ve used in chicken and rice dishes, sausage and lentil stew and on homemade pizza. Like you say can be a good way to get some more veggies in.

Passthecherrycoke · 02/06/2019 08:16

It’s bound to just be a phase so I wouldn’t be worried about the longer term effects of heavy chorizo consumption! I’d let him get on with it and I’m sure he’ll have had enough in a couple of weeks

Bluesheep8 · 02/06/2019 08:27

He can still have the flavour of chorizo without actually eating it. If you slice and dry fry some, all the lovely red flavoured oil comes out. Remove the chorizo, then fry onions etc in the oil it's created and build your dish from there. Gives you chorizo flavoured anything! Smile

MrsxRocky · 02/06/2019 08:30

My 7yr old will only eat pepperoni sandwiches. Not ham or beef etc. So for like a year that's what he had in school. I've tried different meats but nope. He just won't touch them.
Ears other foods quite normally though.

TheCanterburyWhales · 02/06/2019 08:31

The fat content is high.
Dd loves salame (we're in Italy) and I buy a bit, once a week.

cranetime · 02/06/2019 08:31

Thanks again. I will try a dish, chorizo chicken and veggies, and see how it goes.

I actually hate the smell and the taste 😩. The things we do!

Waitrose do chorizo crumb which is lovely in a pasta dish with cherry tomatoes, tender stem and mozzarella cubes.

Fantail · 02/06/2019 09:26

It’s lovely with scrambled eggs. Also sprinkled on cauliflower and broccoli.

ThisIsTheEndgame · 02/06/2019 09:29

Bloomburger I've just added that chorizo crumb to my online shop. That will be lush mixed in with the breadcrumb topping on a Mac and cheese.

Eminybob · 02/06/2019 09:35

My 4 year old loves chorizo. I tend to do it in pasta/gnocchi/risotto dishes. Gets him to try stuff he wouldn’t otherwise. I wouldn’t let him eat it by the ring though Grin

BertrandRussell · 02/06/2019 09:41

I’d just let him have it. It’s probably just a phase- like everything else!

cranetime · 02/06/2019 10:35

Eminybob Will definitely do a rice dish because he won’t touch rice.

He’s having the thin slices, not the sausages. That’s what they had on the hotel buffet 🙄

Yes just check the salt content we use it in a bean and chorizo casserole type dish and ours (6 and 3) love it with rice. 🙌
