😂 I wonder random things like this too. I would think they sleep when they've landed somewhere but then they're so alert and move if you go near them..so who knows..

Damntheman · 03/06/2019 10:21

www.fliesonly.com/do-flies-sleep-at-night/

Apparently some researchers were also bothered by this question :D You're welcome!

I found that article genuinely interesting.

I have heard before that humans and fruit fits have very similar DNA but I did not know that most flies had the same kind of sleep pattern as us.
Thank you posting it.

Has anyone else got a strange question they need answering.

Absolutely loads but minds gone blank...will have a think....

SummerHouse · 03/06/2019 19:18

I just yesterday had the same question about dolphins! 9 yr old DS said they sleep their brain one part at a time. Sounds interesting but he often just makes stuff up...

JuniperNarni · 03/06/2019 19:25

The dolphin thing is true, I'm sure I read it on a fact sheet when we went dolphin spotting.

HelmutFrontbut · 03/06/2019 19:44

Mosquitoes go to sleep next the soles of my feet (after passing out blood-drunk) Hmm Whiny little twats Angry

Angie169 · 03/06/2019 21:17

SummerHouse
I think your DS is right , I think it applies to whales too.

HelmutFrontbut
At least you can stomp on the little bastards there .

When money was a new thing why did people accept it and its value ?
For example in days of yore people bartered .
Say 5 chickens and a goat was bartered for a sheep how did someone get away with saying instead of me giving you my 5 chickens and a goat I am going to give you this shiny stone that you can not eat , breed , and no one else wants .
I get that once the ball was rolling it would eventually become more common but how did the 1st few transactions come about .

( I have a wandering mind , it needs to be kept on a lead or I will lose it altogether ! )

angie I will lend you DS. He has answers for EVERYTHING. I am wondering now if he is actually right...Confused

SpringLake · 05/06/2019 08:12

@Angie169 strange how these ideas come at night :)
i guess there was always going to be someone who had enough sheep and goats, but had a mother/child/celebration at home that they could surprise... and shinier stones are so much nicer than plain ones :)

Angie169 · 05/06/2019 22:27

SummerHouse
thanks I could do with someone that can answer the random crap my brain want to know about while my body is doing its damnedest to get to sleep . Confused

SpringLake
I can see the expression on the Cave womans face when hubby brings home a gift of a shinny stone instead of some meat , it would be the same look I gave my DH many years ago when he bought me a microwave for my birthday Sad

beachboo · 05/06/2019 23:15

My 5 yo asked me if penguins have knees ? I said I didn't know as was cooking but I should google it really 😂
Do chicken have teeth was another one that made me laugh

Angie169 · 07/06/2019 23:02

beachboo chickens teeth , d'ya recon they are as rear as hens teeth or are chickens born / hatched with teeth and then fall out as they grow up to be hens ( without teeth )

( I can safely say I have never wrote the word teeth so many time in just three lines ! Shock) )

My burning questions are all about food. How did someone ever think that to drink milk from a cow was a good idea? Why did anyone ever think cutting potatoes and frying them in a horrible substance like oil would be tasty? How did they ever find out that something as horrible looking as tea leaves made a great drink? That's only the start.
Angie169 Is cavewoman a new superhero?

Angie169 · 08/06/2019 02:14

Totaldogsbody
I think ( with absolutely no research done ) that someone saw a calf drinking milk from its mum and a woman in the household / village was having problems producing milk for her new born baby and though mum cow feeding baby cow white stuff, human mum got no white stuff for human baby , steal some of mum cows and give it to baby , baby lives = good cow milk
( I hope I did not get to technical for anyone then )

Cavewoman is captain CAVEMANs wife

If a gnat or any biting insect bites/stings me or sucks my blood, does it ingest the medications I am on? So are they getting stoned on Fentanyl or Opioids?Smile

Hidingtonothing · 08/06/2019 02:25

Yep, lots of food ones here too, like how did someone first discover how to make cake? And language ones, like who decided a cake was called a cake? Not all my questions are cake related btw, it's just the first thing that sprang to mind and now I want cake Cake

@SummerHouse I found a fascinating article (your son is right):

"How do dolphins sleep?" www.google.com/amp/s/amp.livescience.com/44822-how-do-dolphins-sleep.html

Poppins2016 · 08/06/2019 02:42

@Hidingtonothing

I'm constantly wondering how humans came up with certain food combinations. How did we discover that flour + yeast = bread? Why did we make flour in the first place? Etc.

Angie169 · 08/06/2019 02:45

I often wondered how many people have had to die before something they have all consumed is classed as poisonous .
if all the people were in one village it would be fairly easy to figure out what killed them but spread across the country / world how the heck did people know not to eat stuff before we could communicate easily across long distances

I have a wandering mind , it needs to be kept on a lead or I will lose it altogether ! Hahaha! Me too!

Totaldogsbody - I find the good ones fascinating too. And going back that far we're unlikely to get any answers really just theories from archaeologists etc cooking anything at all I'm thinking must have been accidental initially - some caveman tripping and his precious piece of meat fell in the fire he didn't want to waste it and thought "fuck it I'm eating it anyway" and it was actually delicious.

Milk I get to an extent as we also produce milk but what was going through the mind of the first person to eat an egg?!

"And language ones, like who decided a cake was called a cake?" There's TONS of research on this stuff, it was part of my degree. Especially fascinating are the effects of geopolitics and even natural disasters on language. I could bore for hours on this one.

I'm currently wondering how people in other countries view politics due to an earlier conversation with a South African call handler who didn't know what I meant when I said our govt was "right wing" I had (clearly mistakenly) thought it was a relatively common term and concept, certainly in countries where one of the main languages is English. And I was kinda stumped at trying to explain it!
