developing food intolerances as an adult

Is this possible?

For the past week or so I’ve noticed I get indigestion and a feeling of fullness with lots of bloating after eating certain things. Triggers I’ve noticed so far are weetabix, Bircher, fibre one bars, bread. Think everything else has been fine.

Is this possible or a coincidence and there’s an underlying cause? I thought if I’d had an intolerance it would have shown up by now, I’m nearly 30

Yes.
In the last year I’ve started developing hangover symptoms the day after eating wheat.

I was hoping someone was going to come on and say no, not possible. I really don’t want to start eliminating foods but guess I’ll have no choice.

Did you stop eating wheat TheSheepofWallSt or do you just put up with it?

I developed a dairy allergy in my early 20s. So did my mum. So did my cousin. Not severe enough to need it eliminating - it just makes us sneeze.

DH developed a gluten intolerance in his early 40s. Years later now and he can't go near the stuff.

It's a bloody nightmare!

It certainly is
It’s gluten and lactose for me..but now I’ve noitced that I’m not digesting several veggies cabbage, peas, mushrooms, green beans

Yes you can, call late onset allergy. Although intolerance is slightly different from an allergy as you can often tolerate small amounts. Where a true allergy means you need to cut it out altogether.

I found that after a period of total elimination I could tolerate, things again.

Yes it's quite common for things like coeliac disease to become apparent later in life.

It's worth ruling coeliac disease out if it is gluten you are reacting to because it's an autoimmune condition and can cause other problems if not addressed. You need to keep eating gluten until you gave a blood test.

Mango and peanuts make me itchy, as does alcohol.

I can no longer eat muesli as it irritates my intestines.

Yes, and they've worsened over the years...eating anything I'm intolerant/allergic to makes me extremely itchy...it's unbearable!

Yes - I developed an intolerance to lactose in my 40's.
I can't handle it all now - bloating and other nasty things happen.

Yes, my dh has developed an intolerance to yeast. Now even the smallest amount makes him feel quite unwell.

Yes, I developed a lactose intolerance in my 30s, and know people diagnosed coeliac at 7 and 30s, 40s and 50s.

Did this happen after pregnancy by any chance? It did with me and I was told it's fairly common - body can react postnatally to things it never previously did!

Yes very common, and becoming more common as we go on thanks to over use of antibacterials, disrupting the natural microbe symbiosis.

I haven’t developed any food intolerances (yet) but I have developed an allergy eczema in response to various skin products, and an allergy to tree pollen both in my late twenties.

Does it only happen around wheat or all high fibre foods? With her colitis mum started getting bloated but only noticed it around brocolli as it was the food she at least — it actually happened every time she ate anything with a lot of fibre in it.

My 24 year old daughter has developed an intolerance to shell fish
She usec to eat it with bo problems but teice now rcently she’s been really poorly

We do have allergies in the family. I have a nut allergy and eczema and hay fever. Other daughter has hay fever. 24 yr old is dairy intolerant and hay fever

Yes to Gluten. Im sure its manufacturing or growing processes changing, not us.

Sadly now I cant eat it at all and I think giving it up makes you even more sensitive. So now I have to avoid it completely

I have been wondering about this. I am finding I can't eat dairy products since my surgery 12 weeks ago without needing the bathroom very shortly after.

Yes I’ve developed an intolerance to alcohol- I decided to go teetotal after a particularly heavy session and feeling rough. 7 years after I had a summer trifle with fruit soaked in alcohol - oh my gosh I was so poorly. Now I avoid it in food as well - my symptoms after even a small amount are hideous

Definitely.
I’m mid 30’s and as an adult I have developed a dairy allergy and severe intolerances to eggs, raw tomatoes and banana.
if I eat even a small amount of any of the three I get nauseous and dizziness within 30 minutes then severe stomach cramping and an upset stomach for a couple of hours.

I hate it so much.

It’s interesting... I was definitely intolerant before pregnancy (skin rashes etc)- so cut it out. Recovered during pregnancy and breastfeeding and could eat with impunity. Noticed over the past 12 months (since stopped breastfeeding) gained weight at a rate of knotts and regularly feeling shit- which seemed to correlate with eating wheat.

Cut it out almost totally, then tried again to eat it- started getting hangover like symptoms after more than say... a slice of bread?

I think I can tolerate v small amounts, but I had three chapatis after a stressful day on monday night, and Tuesday I felt like I’d sunk 2 bottles of wine- headaches, shits, nausea, lethargy.... I haven’t drunk in a fortnight and I felt instinctively it was the chapatis.

I’ve had a small piece of bread today and starting with dry mouth/ queasy feeling now- so guessing I’m going towards a total elimination scenario Sad shame as I love carbs. Particularly the white ones.

Just after I hit 40, I started developing intolerance for cheese and anything that has slightly too much oil and garlic, all of which to put it politely give me horrendous belly ache Angry
