developing food intolerances as an adult

Is this possible?

For the past week or so I’ve noticed I get indigestion and a feeling of fullness with lots of bloating after eating certain things. Triggers I’ve noticed so far are weetabix, Bircher, fibre one bars, bread. Think everything else has been fine.

Is this possible or a coincidence and there’s an underlying cause? I thought if I’d had an intolerance it would have shown up by now, I’m nearly 30

I developed lactose intolerance in my late teens. Had always been fine with it before then. My partner also seems to have developed it recently and he’s 35 and never had issues before

Mid 30's developed intolerance to gluten and legumes. I only confirmed this by trialling an elimination diet. I was experiencing terrible stomach pains and bloating that would keep me awake during the night. I ended up seeing a Gastroenterologist who told me to eat low FODMAP foods, I thought it was a load rubbish until I felt relief from eliminating those foods! It is a pain when I go out for dinner and travel but on a positive note I've lost weight as I can eat delicious cakes and pastries anymore. I recommend doing some research on FODMAP, there is an app you can download as well as FB groups. I would also suggest you see a dietician to guide you through the process. Keep in mind FODMAP foods take 4-24 hrs to cause side effects so it's not always the most recent thing you are causing the problems. Good luck I hope you find relief OP Thanks

@darkriver19886 unfortunately it doesn’t work like that, something like c-diff followed by antibiotics can permanently alter the make up of your gut microbiome, which can then impact how it handles different foods.

I really urge you to read the book The Diet Myth by Professor Tim Spector - it’s a fantastic primer on gut microbes and their effect on health, solid science but written in a very accessible way. It’s written more towards the microbiomes impact on weight, but it will explain what c-diff and antibiotics can do.

Yes I started getting hives and itching regularly plus lots of other symptoms that made me feel very unwell after multiple food types. Its a histamine intolerance type problem. Loads of people get it.

Thank you I will look it up.

This is very interesting to read. I'm 42 and had my 2nd baby last year. Since then I seem to have almost continual tummy troubles. I've also put on loads of weight. I was thinking a trip to the doctor might be in order, as well as a diet so may try to combine a food elimination plan too.

I am pescatarian (mostly veggie but eat eggs/fish a couple of times a week) and find it hard to come up with new ideas for things to eat. I love spicy foods but they are pretty painful the next day! Also used to have muesli for breakfast but I feel like it goes straight through me. Sad

Did this happen after pregnancy by any chance? It did with me and I was told it's fairly common - body can react postnatally to things it never previously did!

I developed my lactose 4 or 5 years before I had my first child, but post-natally eSmore tolerant for s while.

Yes, I'm 41 and was diagnosed about 3 years ago.

I became severely intolerant to eggs in my 20's...I can't even kiss my husband after he has eaten egg as it makes my lips swell up, if i mistakenly eat egg, i get stomach cramps within a few minutes.

After having my daughter at 19 I can't drink milk (i can have butter etc) but milk as it is does not agree.

Yip
Allergy to wheat and intolerance to strawberries :( (my fav fruit!)
Both happened in my mid 30's nowhere near being pregnant or ill etc...
