Scottish midges - help!

user1494670108 · 29/05/2019 21:22

We're in a campervan- have been having a wonderful time but have arrived on the Isle of Skye and the midges are horrific. Booked for 2 nights not staying tomorrow as can't bear this
Our question is, how local is the problem likely to be? This end of Skye, the west of Scotland???

West of Scotland I’m afraid!
How can anyone go to Scotland on holiday and not know about the midges?

Get yourself some Avon Skin So Soft and apply
Iberally

Fireinthegrate · 29/05/2019 21:31

Apply liberally

Ginger153 · 29/05/2019 21:32

Antihistamines needed to. They're only out for part of the day.

Walnutwhipster · 29/05/2019 21:33

I was told they've changed the recipe but have a Scottish friend who swears by Avon skin so soft.

Redglitter · 29/05/2019 21:35

I live on the West Coast of Scotland & have never had problems with midges - ever. If you're in a campervan you'll find somewhere that's midgie free, maybe just not on Skye. Dont worry though there are plenty midgie free areas

grafittiartist · 29/05/2019 21:37

Take up smoking- they hate it!

ThreeFish · 29/05/2019 21:38

Not all the west of Scotland! Only the highlands and Skye is notorious.

Get Smidge and lots of it! Amazing stuff and actually quite pleasant to use! www.amazon.co.uk/Smidge-Midge-Insect-Repellent-75/dp/B00413715E?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 29/05/2019 21:41

Aren’t you using the smidge forecast? Currently Skye is at 1, it’s only going to get worse.Head East!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 29/05/2019 21:47

Smidge

You also get anti midge candles

Also genetics - you can’t really change that but they LOVE my husband and really don’t care about me.

floraloctopus · 29/05/2019 21:50

Eat marmite and go to a local shop and find out what the locals use.
Midges are a way of life in west Scotland in May - they are as common as wasps at a jam jar.

Likethebattle · 29/05/2019 21:51

I live on the west coast and they don’t bother me. I must not be tasty to a Midge lol. Skin so soft or smidge.

Evennow · 29/05/2019 21:52

I found Skin So Soft ineffective. Try Smidge - insect repellent available in outdoor sport shops, chemists etc. It might be best to escape to an area that is not noted for its midges. Try the Borders perhaps. The area around Peebles is great for walking. NB Keep away from boggy areas and stay out of the forests.

Likethebattle · 29/05/2019 21:52

Also don’t use hairspray they like it for some reason then get stuck in your hair. Wouldn’t be a Scottish summer without the little clouds.

H2OH20Everywhere · 29/05/2019 22:11

Welcome to Skye! Apologies for the midgies. Do you have any antihistamines? It won't stop the buggers biting but the bites won't itch.
Whereabouts are you?

Williamshatnershorses · 29/05/2019 22:16

Smidge anD antihistamines to stop the itching.

Williamshatnershorses · 29/05/2019 22:16

Smidge is usually for sale in Scottish supermarkets too, I get mine at out local (central Scotland) Tesco,

Perihelion · 29/05/2019 22:27

Smidge, headnet, smoking or at least holding a cigar and keep doors and windows closed. I've been known to go for 100% DEET when I had an outdoor job in the NW Highlands.
A breeze is good, shade is shite.
And check yourself for ticks.

willowtree66 · 29/05/2019 22:32

Come to the Moray Coast (east of Inverness). It's beautiful and there's no midges 😁

Notflyingfree · 29/05/2019 22:35

As everyone else says you need smidge and apply to all exposed skin! I also found skin so soft was not effective and made my face spotty.

EvaHarknessRose · 29/05/2019 22:49

Look up the Smidge forecast sorry you were unlucky.

tobypercy · 29/05/2019 23:03

get down to the beach, or anywhere windy. They can't hang around in the wind.
Or light a fire, they hate smoke (my FIL took up smoking purely to keep the midges away, according to family folklore).

user1494670108 · 29/05/2019 23:03

Thanks all, we hoped (& believed) we were too early for them. We've come from Near Inverness which was gorgeous and midge-free, and are currently half drowned in skin so soft and deet.
I think we'll move on tomorrow as they are totally spoiling any enjoyment plus It's pissing down.
We're near Broadford

Smidge! Your only man for this job!

Skyejuly · 29/05/2019 23:08

Ah but Skye is so beautiful....dont let them ruin it...and go in April next time!
