Anyone know Morecambe?

My MIL will be 80 in October. We’d like a family celebration and have selected Morecambe as somewhere we can all travel to. We need a nice hotel that can accommodate 7 adults and somewhere we can enjoy a good evening dinner. I don’t know the area at all and MIL has a notion that Morecambe is a sleazy area. Could anyone advise please!
Much appreciated, thanks!

The Midland is beautiful and ticks all those boxes.
Morecambe is really lovely, on the up and the prom is really lovely. It’s one of my favourite places!

GoofyIsACow · 29/05/2019 21:05

Say lovely more! 😳

Theonewiththecat · 29/05/2019 21:11

The Midland.

Morcambe used to be a proper dive. But it is getting better, but there isn't alot to do. It's very nice to walk along the front, but in October it will most probably be on the colder side --and it's always bloody windy-'

QuantamBaby · 29/05/2019 21:11

Morecambe is a slightly strange place to choose if you've no particular links to the area Confused

I agree The Midland is lovely but there's not much else to do - it's rather a run down area.

If you want somewhere close then have you considered Lancaster? There are nice hotels and restaurants and interesting things to visit in the daytime.

TinyTickler · 29/05/2019 21:15

The Midland is beautiful. Morecambe is otherwise a bit shit.

Rememberallball · 29/05/2019 21:19

Went to a wedding recently and stayed at the Best Western Lothersdale hotel - a couple of minutes walk from the Eric Morecambe statue and almost opposite the lifeboat shop. A nice hotel with small car park at the back, nice restaurant and bar.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 29/05/2019 21:20

The Midland. I’ve always wanted to stay there since I spent a student summer working at Frontierland !

TheCumbrian · 29/05/2019 21:25

The Midland is the obvious/only choice.

Morecambe in October however could be a bit of a letdown, considering how close you are to Lancaster/ The South Lakes and lots of lovely places all the way up the A6 .... why Morecambe?

IndianaMoleWoman · 29/05/2019 21:26

It’s her birthday - let her decide! I’d say in that area Lytham St Anne’s is nicer. I know you’re planning a dinner but what are you planning during the day? Does it need to be coastal?

FairyBatman · 29/05/2019 21:29

Definitely the Midland to stay at, dinner or afternoon tea in the sun room is also lovely.

The beach there is lovely now, but unfortunately the rest is a bit shit. You would be much better staying in Morecambe and spending the day in Lancaster or maybe Windamere.

Frightenedbunny · 29/05/2019 21:31

Why Morecambe?? There’s not a lot there! The Midland would be a nice option but there’s not much else there and October will be fairly grim!! Morecambe isn’t that far from the lakes. I would suggest there as opposed to Morecambe. If you do decide on Morecambe and have transport there are some lovely rural retreats for food. The fleece at dolphinholme is lovely and has a hotel as is the barn at scorton. They do a lovely afternoon tea.

ComeBackBarack · 29/05/2019 21:37

Yes, the midland . It’s a fabulous hotel But there’s lots of lovely places neAr there that have beautiful hotels and surroundings. Morecambe is a bit sketchy.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 29/05/2019 21:46

You could go to Carnforth station and see all the “Brief Encounter” stuff - lots of atmospheric sights, small museum and THE cafe , lovely cake there.

wigglybeezer · 29/05/2019 21:53

What about Grange Over Sands? bit " naicer" than Morecambe, although the Midland is tempting.

rockingthelook · 29/05/2019 21:59

Went to Morecambe, stayed at the Midland, nice, saw the statue of Eric , looked at the many charity shops, came home, the end :(

GoofyIsACow · 29/05/2019 22:00

Whatever you decide i have to implore you not to choose lancaster over morecambe because Lancaster is utterly depressing nowadays sadly.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 29/05/2019 22:09

Midland really lovely but the rest is depressing. Oh, apart from the 1950's Italian coffee shop which is wonderful!

It's not exactly quaint seaside town.

howwudufeel · 29/05/2019 22:12

I would go to Lytham St. Annes instead.

Atalune · 29/05/2019 22:13

It’s a bit of a dump. Sadly. Sorry.

Can you choose another locale?

QuantamBaby · 29/05/2019 22:14

Why is Lancaster depressing?

Usuallyinthemiddle · 29/05/2019 22:16

Grange might be a more conventional place.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 29/05/2019 22:18

Heysham is nice for a walk round for an elderly person if you are staying in Morecambe.
Like pp have said Morecombe might be a bit cold and closed in October.
Close Park in ok too.

TheCumbrian · 29/05/2019 22:19

Lancaster just seems to be one big building site at the moment. I wouldn't say it's depressing but it's definitely at a 'work in progress' stage in its life as a city.

RandomMess · 29/05/2019 22:20

Morecambe is certainly nice and flat Grinand the views utterly stunning!

Midland lovely, short day trip to Carnforth, Lancaster Castle tour is good too.

RandomMess · 29/05/2019 22:20

A lot of the building work will be finished by October Smile
