Anyone know Morecambe?

My MIL will be 80 in October. We’d like a family celebration and have selected Morecambe as somewhere we can all travel to. We need a nice hotel that can accommodate 7 adults and somewhere we can enjoy a good evening dinner. I don’t know the area at all and MIL has a notion that Morecambe is a sleazy area. Could anyone advise please!
Much appreciated, thanks!

Morecambe is a bit odd, not a dive it’s just weird and there’s not a lot to do. Strange choice.
Just go half an hou further up the motorway and go to the lakes

A cemetery with the lights left on...
Can’t remember who said it but it’s true!

RandomMess · 29/05/2019 22:32

Is that traveller cemetery, I know it's very well tended and "showy" next to the neglected general cemetery.

Another one here... Midland lovely... although very odd bathroom/strange door arrangement when we stayed there... the town was very grim though... Grange Over Sands lovely though... boutique hotels/beautiful bay...

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried the Midland but booking websites sat they are fully booked for that weekend. Have chosen Morecambe as MIL lives in Carnforth. She would like to get away for a night but not too far as FIL is frail. We’ll be travelling from South of England so won’t have much time there. It will just be afternoon and evening then setting off after breakfast to be home in time for school and work next day.

There is The Ashton in Lancaster a very posh B&B on the outskirts of Lancaster and I believe it will do evening meals by appointment- it does High Teas anyway.

Alex Polizi aka Hotel Inspector rated it as "The most stylish B&B"

How about Kirkby Lonsdale if you're not wanting to travel far? The Royal has nice accomodation and there are lots of nice pubs for food.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 30/05/2019 16:34

Or The Royal in Heysham? Not swanky but nice with rooms

nc100 · 30/05/2019 16:45

The Royal at Heysham or the Morecambe Hotel are good options. Both have nice big fires etc and decent menus.

Morecambe is great, so much more to do in the area than a lot of people make out.

Another one that prefers it to Lancaster

CasparMum · 30/05/2019 18:28

The Midland is ok, looks stunning, but service not great. Brucciani’s is a lovely 1950’s coffee and ice cream shop. The promenade is a nice walk, but in October the wind will be brutal. Otherwise Morecambe is a bit grim.
Lancaster is frankly depressing (and I come from there). There are some nice places further out in the more rural areas, but you would need to decide how far you want to travel and know where they are. Nicer places tend to be further to travel to.

RandomMess · 30/05/2019 18:31

What about Clitheroe or is that too far?

Usuallyinthemiddle · 30/05/2019 18:36

Ooh, or The Inn at Whitewell!
Or Nigel Whatsit's gaff

Usuallyinthemiddle · 30/05/2019 18:37

Bruccianis! That's the one. Reminds me of childhood.

nc100 · 30/05/2019 18:47

OP has said it's only afternoon and evening. A stroll along the prom, standard photo with Eric, along the jetty and then evening meal and hotel at the Royal Heysham. Sounds perfect to me. Little wander round Heysham village in the morning

helpmum2003 · 30/05/2019 19:00

Personally I would go for Kirkby Lonsdale over Morecambe. Various lovely hotels with restaurants - look on Trip Advisor. Also just further east along A65 are Whoop Hall and Hipping Hall (latter very posh.)

RandomMess · 30/05/2019 19:02

Thurnham Hall with a trip to Wallings in Cockerham the next day 😍

nc100 · 30/05/2019 19:08

Ooh, I really don't get thurnham hall. Lots seem to like it though. Wallings is a good shout though!

Underhisi · 30/05/2019 19:28

I agree with Kirkby Lonsdale over Morecambe especially if you can't get into the Midland.

EnidButton · 30/05/2019 19:36

What about the lakes? On the doorstep of Carnforth. Or The Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge is really nice. They do good food. You could go on the steamer across Lake Windermere during the day if it's nice weather.

I wouldn't go to Morecambe tbh. It can be a bit rough at night. I'm sure it has its nice bits. The prom is nicely done up. But not where I'd choose for a birthday treat.

EnidButton · 30/05/2019 19:43

Oh I missed the October part. Maybe not the steamer then but the rest would still be lovely. The trees will be turning by then and the colours are just stunning.

TheCumbrian · 30/05/2019 20:46

Ahh hang on - so you need a hotel to stay yourselves in that also does a good evening meal for a range of ages that's within 20 minutes ish (or closer) of Carnforth?

Frightenedbunny · 30/05/2019 20:56

What about the Morecambe hotel? That’s pleasant and good food. Or the fleece at dolphinholme. Lovely food and the hotel has really good reviews from the guardian x
