So Iv handed my notice in and next Wednesday is my last day. I’m on WTC etc and get dla and carers allowance due to having a disabled son hence why Iv had to stop work.

Should I apply today (last full pay slip was yesterday) or should I wait until I wait until 29th June when Iv had. My last, albeit small pay slip?

Is it you or your son that gets DLA?

Inbedbynine · 29/05/2019 18:20

My son. I’m his carer. I am LP with two school age children.

NoBaggyPants · 29/05/2019 18:22

In that case it is UC you need to claim. People are advising you differently because you keep saying you get DLA, in which case it would be IS.

Sorry didn’t think about how I worded my OP as the dla goes to me (although paid for my son I know).

Does anyone know how I can get a figure?

OP posts:
imaflutteringkite · 29/05/2019 18:28

You could try the Turn 2 Us benefits calculator. No one can give you an idea of a figure as everyone's circumstances are different.

Inbedbynine · 29/05/2019 18:29

I’ve been on that and the figure was higher than the figure UC originally gave me. The guy kept giving random figures, then told me I would have a cap so wouldn’t be entitled to what the entitled to website said. Then said I was, then just kept changing everything, kept speaking to a manager but wouldn’t let me speak to a manager .... blah blah and I don’t trust anyone at the moment!

Join the face book group ‘universal credit essentials’ they’ll work out your entitlement and the best time to apply

hollytom · 29/05/2019 18:36

The best calculator is entitled to this is what’s generally recommended

Gingerkittykat · 29/05/2019 18:39

You wouldn't have a cap because you have a disabled child.

kaytee87 · 29/05/2019 18:43

Try the calculator on the entitled to website.

If you're paid within your assessment period (first 4 weeks after claim) then your first months money will be lower, the following month it will be reassessed.
You will wait 5 weeks from application to receiving your money.
Your other benefits will stop but you may get a run on of housing benefit for a few weeks to pay your rent. You may also be able to get a discretionary housing payment.
If you live in housing association they may be willing to change your rent date to suit uc payment date.
Where abouts in the country are you?

Inbedbynine · 29/05/2019 19:01

I’m going to wait until next Thursday when Iv actually stopped working. I will have to declare one weeks wage but it’s less than the threshold so wont change anything for month after.

I will have a look at that FB page, thank you I didn’t know it existed. Who is it run by?

Sadly I rent privately so no change of date possible. All my dd’s come out on the 1st of the month and I like knowing everything resets at the beginning of the month if that makes sense? No idea what I will do about that...

I live in the south east.

I would apply after this wage payment if your "last" wage is going to be quite low.

Generally speaking you'd get Standard Allowance for yourself (under 25 £251 or 25+ £317), Child Element (£277 if born before April 2017, £231 if born after April 2017), Disabled Child Element (£160 for Low Rate, £390 for High Rate), Housing Element (google your LHA rate, multiply by 52 and divide by 12 for max. award), Carers Element (£160). You'd then have Carers Allowance deducted (£285-ish a Month) and residual Wages (first £287 disregarded, anything over that is deducted 63p for each £1).

The date you apply becomes the start date of your Assessment Period (so if today your Assessment Period would run from 28th of this month to 27th of the following month) and you'd be paid 7 days after your Assessment Period ends (so 04/07/19, using today as an example). That date will remain your payment date (so 4th of each month) unless it falls on a weekend or bank holiday when you will be paid on the last working day before this date.

Once you've applied and your ID has been verified you will be able to apply for an Advance (some manage to verify online, others will need a face to face for this - although you will need at least a brief face to face to get your Personal Security Number). Be aware your Advance, although indicative of your max. award, will not include any Deductions (including that for Carers Allowance) so will likely be higher than future UC awards.

Inbedbynine · 29/05/2019 19:05

chick with that FB page how/who works it out for you? It’s says they don’t PM and I don’t want to put all my personal details on a page (yes I can see it’s a closed group but I have an ex who has stalked me in the past and has a court order not allowed near us but don’t want that risk of posting personal stuff on there)

OP posts:
Inbedbynine · 29/05/2019 19:09

Sorry 8day cross post. Those figures are higher than I was given.

I’m a bit confused regarding carers. I was told carers allowance was still paid separately and won’t be stopped whist UC is worked out. So would I then have to take carers off this amount?

OP posts:
kaytee87 · 29/05/2019 19:12

If all of your bills are paid monthly then it's not too bad. Some people's rent and wages are paid 4 weekly and it causes them issues as UC is calculated and paid monthly.
If you apply next Thursday then it should be around 11th/12th July you'll get your payment and you'll receive it every calendar month on the same date.
As you're obviously IT literate you shouldn't have much trouble with the UC online system, which is sadly impossible for a lot of people, in the local authority I work in only 75% of people actually have access to the internet and it's the other 15% that need help the most!
Just make sure that everything is completely filled out on your checklist and you either verify your ID online or complete the ID activity and take your ID to the job centre.
You'll have to attend an appointment at the job centre with your 'work coach' and the system will ask you about what kind of work you can do.
Obviously you will be a carer and it does have a question where it asks about that too so don't panic.

The phone number for booking an appointment will come up at the end or form.

kaytee87 · 29/05/2019 19:13

Carers allowance and DLA /PIP are a separate payment from UC.

kaytee87 · 29/05/2019 19:16

Carers allowance and DLA /PIP are a separate payment from UC.

Ignore this, misread your question

Bravelurker · 29/05/2019 19:36

Hi Op, I'm currently waiting for my first UC as my job came to an end at the beginning of this month, and although I have yet to get my last pay which will be tomorrow, I was advised to apply as soon as my last day.
I don't wish to disclose which benefits I will receive but in answer to your original question, I completed the online UC application the following day after my last day, was contacted almost immediately for my first appointment with the DWP and at the interview was told that I do not need to declare my final pay as the HMRC is linked to DWP and they will work out the deductions accordingly.

If what I have been told is correct, then by the end of next week, (a week after my last pay from employer ) I will be advised of what my UC amount will be, then the following week I should be paid.

Bravelurker · 29/05/2019 19:40

I hope that makes sense, but in a nutshell - apply online and they will advise you, once you have answered a trillion questions as no 2 claims will be the same.

Inbedbynine · 29/05/2019 19:44

Ok thank you. Can someone clarify my question about the carers element? So I will still get carers allowance each week, but do I get an amount taken off UC because I’m a carer? I’m not sure I understand the comment above!

OP posts:
Bravelurker · 29/05/2019 19:53

I'm not sure if I'm the right person to answer that I'm afraid as I am single, have no dependents and I'm not a carer so my claim quite straightforward. Sorry.

kaytee87 · 29/05/2019 20:03

@Inbedbynine the information on this link may help.

www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/support/benefits-entitlements/carers/carers-allowance

Inbedbynine · 29/05/2019 20:07

Thanks for that link. So they help you out being a carer by giving you carers allowance, then take that money off uc and then give you a bit back Hmm

OP posts:
MyDcAreMarvel · 29/05/2019 20:09

Op carers allowance is deducted pound for pound from your UC. However you will then revive a carers element so you will be approx £30 a week better of as a carer not £66 better off.
