Butter
If I only had a few dollars left, I'd still buy butter.
Not margarine, not 20-80 spread, just real pure butter.

Anything else, I'll do without, or by a substitute, etc

What is your "I'm not going without" thing?

Fairy washing up liquid

BadLad · 30/05/2019 23:35

Sancerre.

I've gone off cheap wine completely. Would rather go without (and stick to beer).

Most cheap booze is foul. Whiskey and brandy need to be good stuff to be enjoyable.

Sashkin
we’re in Canada, fruit and veg are v expensive here and people seem to think that jarred “apple sauce” is a fruit and not a high-sugar pudding
Can you not get unsweetened applesauce?

@CherryPavlova the thread is about being broke, not destitute. There is a difference.

Crunchymum · 31/05/2019 00:04

Broke / destitute.

Semantics and if you haven't been there, you don't have a clue.

CatAndHisKit · 31/05/2019 00:07

when i was a student i used to spend £40 a month on my shopping bill which included brand name food for my dog. I always said that when i qualified i knew i had made it when i could afford nice loo roll. i buy home bargains loo roll now......apparently i still dont earn enough to have andrex 😖😂

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/05/2019 06:07

For just me, coffee and moisturiser.

I would hate not being able to have either of those at all and would keep downgrading from Nescafé gold blend (I actually prefer instant over ‘proper’ coffee) and mid priced moisturisers until I could afford neither. They’re what I’d prioritise for myself.

We have dogs though, so they’re the true luxury. Food and vet bills . And uni dc.

CrazyAllAroundMe · 31/05/2019 06:21

@HotChocolateLover wow I thought it was just me. Piggy bacon. It's a thing! The smell as it starts cooking makes me want to vomit (asda is a culprit) has no nice bacon smell and bland taste but def piggy

Proper eggs. Morrisons /asda/tesco own brand free range I've tried but they're all small and pale tasteless yolks.. That's not a happy hen Sad Totally different from the farm/side of road honesty box sales

CherryPavlova · 31/05/2019 08:45

NorthEndGuy Do explain, please? Broke to me means very poor, without money, an empty purse and bank account (if you’ve even a bank account). I think you don’t know the meaning of broke!

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/05/2019 09:12

People on this thread definitely aren't including 'actually broke' in their definition of 'broke' if they still expect to have a daily coffee shop coffee, fizzy pop, and certain brands at that, or selections of artisan cheeses.

Lets hope none of you are ever food bank broke because, horror of horrors, you get given whatever they have available, which is chosen for practicality of storage and preparation and may be rather different to the type of food you are used to eating.

Allergictoironing · 31/05/2019 09:19

In my mind, being broke is more "do I have coffee of any kind at all" rather than "what brand of coffee do I buy". I would have real issues without butter for example, but I tend to get the Asda own brand block butter. About the only things I'm brand conscious about are tea and fizzy drinks - and the drinks is because I'm aspartame intolerant & the vast majority of makes contain that.

Oh and the cat's food of course, they would rather go hungry than eat anything other than their usual!

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/05/2019 09:22

Exactly. If you are that short of money, the money spent on coffee is likely to be better put towards actual food and you can just drink water, hot or cold according to preference and whether you have electricity, if on pre-pay.

Timide · 31/05/2019 09:25

Little pleasures for my child. We were very poor in my childhood. The whole country was. Yet my parents always knew how to make me happy with an ice cream or a balloon.
