No matter how broke I am, I will not compromise on

Butter
If I only had a few dollars left, I'd still buy butter.
Not margarine, not 20-80 spread, just real pure butter.

Anything else, I'll do without, or by a substitute, etc

What is your "I'm not going without" thing?

Me too enjoyed this thread

I feel for those you continue to suffer serious financial hardship. I haven’t ever and nor do I currently, but damned if I’m going to feel guilty about enjoying reading about premium brands that others cherish and posting about my love for organic berries

Cantthinkofausername1990 · 30/05/2019 17:57

Proper bread, not supermarket own brand bread

DarlingNikita · 30/05/2019 18:03

Ragwort, oh no, I often buy porridge to give to my local food bank! I don't get oats though; I buy the ready ones that you just add boiling water to,, the ones with fruit or syrup. I always figure that if someone hasn't got access to/money for electric or gas for cooking, it's an easier way of making something hot and (fairly) nutritious. I hope I haven't been donating stuff no one wants...?

TheGirlWhoLived · 30/05/2019 18:04

Being stoney broke on my arse until my first payday from a new job; we are finding odd ‘back of the cupboard’ tins and making do without lunch etc until next week... like lots of pp’s! Being broke really isn’t very subjective. You are either broke (no food, no money, no electric left, wondering about how to lug two small children 8 miles into town and back for the food bank; assuming you can get a referral)
Or you aren’t broke (revitalise moisturiser is running low, dh has bought the ghastly cheap spread again, I’ve had to pop to the shop for emergency lurpak)

When you cross your fingers that a bad cough doesn’t lead to a temperature because you can’t afford any calpol then I’d say that’s probably more alarming.

the thing I absolutely couldn’t do without is scan and shop Grin
I too had a very small amount of money to spread across too many days, but working out my budget on things to the penny means that we’ll get by.

Assuming that I don’t blow my £4.32 on butter that is

Honeybee85 · 30/05/2019 18:07

Buying fruits and veggies.
Toilet paper.
Decent sun cream.
Deodorant and perfume.

VerbenaGirl · 30/05/2019 18:14

I can be fairly thrifty, but No7 concealer is a must have for me. Fine without on a good skin day, but have too many non-good skin days.

Amibeingdaft81 · 30/05/2019 18:16

I always make a post of buying branded items when I donate to food banks. I just imagine that for some, with children, it will appeal

Amibeingdaft81 · 30/05/2019 18:16

point

Lulu49 · 30/05/2019 18:34

You all sound very spoilt.

clarehhh · 30/05/2019 18:36

FoodologistGirl · 30/05/2019 18:37

Free range eggs and chicken.

EleanorReally · 30/05/2019 18:48

free range eggs
waitrose loo paper

if i can't get lurpak, or norpak, I go without

Amibeingdaft81 · 30/05/2019 18:52

@Lulu49

Yep, I’ll take that on the chin!

BillThePony · 30/05/2019 18:53

Foundation
Mascara
Concealer

Butter
Yorkshire Tea
Fairy Platinum

And never cheap sausages

Twillow · 30/05/2019 18:55

Blimey. I don't much like margarine either but I'd bloody eat it if I was broke. And as for the posters mentioning organic eggs, chutney and perfume...talk about 1st world problems!
I literally can't think of anything I wouldn't compromise on, many of which I already do being not broke but struggling/juggling.
I suppose what you would go without in order to have your organic chutney is another matter.

wichitalinemanswoman · 30/05/2019 18:56

St Ives face wash
Weleda skin cream
Aero mint chocolate
Lipstick
Oasis clothes Grin

darkriver19886 · 30/05/2019 18:56

Diet coke. Cheap versions won't do.

Witchend · 30/05/2019 18:59

Real cola.

EvaHarknessRose · 30/05/2019 19:04

I’m just struggling to get past that Avocadosbeforemortgages upthread didn’t say 🥑 avocados. I guess your user name is social commentary then 😂.

@ChopinIn10Minuets "I won't have the supermarket own brand stuff that has potato starch and heaven knows what else"
You might want a read of the ingredients for your 'proper' Sacla Pesto here, or are potato flakes acceptable?
www.sacla.co.uk/products/pesto/pesto-jars/no1-classic-basil-pesto/

I watched in the supermarket the other day as 2 middle-aged middle-class-looking ladies pondered over tinned tomatoes. One said snootily that she always bought the big brand ones as they're so much nicer. The other one said she couldn't care less actually, she buys the cheapest ones and finds them perfectly good. The first ladies face was a treat and she went all 'Ooh, er really, oh maybe I'll try them then..."

cuppycakey · 30/05/2019 19:15

Another vote for Yorkshire teabags.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 30/05/2019 19:16

Theres always one.. Maybe the lady struggles with spelling.

FitMum87 · 30/05/2019 19:33

My partner and I have both been piss poor before we met each other. I had 70p left and used 40p of it to buy a squash in a heated pub just to get out of the cold.

He had flour and water as a meal as there was no other food and no money.

If I was piss poor again there’s nothing I couldn’t do without but we would feed our children first and foremost and make do with what we can. Thankfully these days there is a lot of support for clothes, items, household bits and food. Or at least I. Our area.

We are financially ok now and we both agreed we wouldn’t buy eggs that weren’t free range because of the cruelty issues.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 30/05/2019 19:33

President Butter - DH goes to France often and brings loads back - it is cheaper there!

Free range chicken breasts - others are so tough!

Colour and style at the hairdressers - no way am I going grey!

Wine!
