Please can someone name this plant?

It came in a selection of mixed herbs with their labels all muddled up, and by a process of elimination I decided it was lovage. But I don’t think it is.

Please can someone name this plant?

Cowslip.

HAve you tried rubbing the leaves and see if the scent gives anything away?

The leaves look pretty big?

Babdoc · 29/05/2019 09:39

Those rough textured leaves look like lemon balm. Rub a leaf - what does it smell of?

llangennith · 29/05/2019 09:44

Some sort of mint?

LibertyGables · 29/05/2019 09:46

Could it be borage?

freshstartnewme · 29/05/2019 09:51

Simon

Looks more like a Dave to me Grin

EBearhug · 29/05/2019 10:00

Definitely not lovage or anything in that family.

It looks quite big compared to the others, but the flowers aren't quite out yet - that will make it easier to identify. My money is on borage.

longwayoff · 29/05/2019 10:09

It's got buds ready to open, ask again when it flowers

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 29/05/2019 10:10

I think it rather suits Geraldine myself.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/05/2019 10:20

Comfrey

Like this?

goose1964 · 29/05/2019 10:25

I'd guess either cowslip or primrose

BertrandRussell · 29/05/2019 10:27

Sorry- she’s called Maud.

I was out smelling the leaves (they of nothing but leaf) when a passing stranger told me it’s borage. That’s 3 votes for borage. Any more for any more? All I know about borage is that you can put the flowers in Pimms.....

Borage (herb robert?) has pretty blue flowers. I think?

Osquito · 29/05/2019 10:31

Definitely borage, I have it all over my garden - very fuzzy/prickly leaves and grows super fast. Beautiful blue (or pink) flowers for pollinators and putting in cocktails.

Osquito · 29/05/2019 10:34

Btw it self seeds like mad so either get rid of spent flower heads or put in a spot where it’s ok to spread. I’ve weeded out several seedlings nearly every day this spring.

BertrandRussell · 29/05/2019 10:41

Oh blimey- so I should take it out of the herb boat I am creating??

I have a garden where nothing grows- so something that self seeds and survives would be my dream plant.

I have never seen anything grow so fast-you can practically see it!

Borage can get quite tall, 30-45 cm, the leaves are rough and a bit hairy, the blue flowers are very pretty and smell cucumber-ish. You can put them in drinks and salads.
Bees love them too.
I don't think it's lemon balm, the leaves are more delicate and smell distinctly lemony. It could be comfrey.

Tartyflette · 29/05/2019 10:50

It's not lovage. If it came in a packet of mixed seeds it is indeed most likely to be borage and not comfrey.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/05/2019 10:50

Comfrey and borage very similar but you’ll know when it flowers, blue for borage or pinky/white/pale lilac for comfrey.

Tartyflette · 29/05/2019 10:54

I'd also put the flowers in a g&t, esp Hendrick's gin, or to pretty up a plain soda or fizzy water, ditto vodka tonic, jugs of plain water for the table, almost any clear or light coloured drink!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/05/2019 11:02

Comfrey or borage, great for bees and compost teas.

llangennith · 29/05/2019 13:59

I've always thought of borage as a weed.
