I don't like the new Boots advert

The one where they sing along to I'm coming out...

I don't like the way a slimmer woman sort of looks the up and down as they are walking towards the sea, the boots adverts are meant to be all about female empowerment, it seems to me, so why show another woman looking at them like that?
It ruins the advert for me

I hate it when the two women dance around in the sea, even they look uncomfortable doing it.

PissOffPeppa · 29/05/2019 00:23

I hate it. HATE IT. Who decided to have that awful out-of-tune squealing? It sounds horrific.

cantfindname · 29/05/2019 00:28

And I thought it was just me. I hate it too.

What a naff advert. Doesn’t inspire me to look like any of them or use any of the products!

Looks like it was made on a reality tv show where they bung a load of models together and put them in groups and they have half an hour to make an advert.

Patroclus · 29/05/2019 02:16

Clearly they didnt get enough abuse for that horendous christmas effort and decided to repeat it.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 29/05/2019 02:22

I thought it was alright actually (but don't live in the UK so obviously I don't actually see it on TV). It's nice to see women who aren't really skinny and not model beautiful on an advert.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 29/05/2019 02:57

I think she’s meant to be wishing she had their confidence. The ad is awlful through and the bit where she sings ‘load of chat’ (because they couldn’t say ‘crap’) is especially cringe.

Also they are two very toned, good looking, proportionate, big chested women - they still look like models!

EnidButton · 29/05/2019 04:05

Am I going blind...they're both slim aren't they? I was expecting plus sized models from the comments.

Skittlesandbeer · 29/05/2019 04:20

I agree the slim woman is showing envy- at their friendship and confidence. Not disdain.

I didn’t hate this advert. Didn’t show them exfoliating, fake tanning, conditioning, epilating or any other messy, yukky, expensive services needed to look like they do... nice in theory, but they’re not plus size. Small side of average, with unaverage good skin and muscle tone.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 29/05/2019 04:51

enid They're not plus sized but they're not typical advert skinny either. Their stomachs wobble when they walk which we don't see often in adverts.

DesperadoDan · 29/05/2019 04:57

I do not like that advert at all, I don’t like the way they have portrayed the slimmer woman as being jealous. The whole thing is cringeworthy.
I didn’t think Boots could do worse than their Christmas advert but they have.

Graphista · 29/05/2019 04:58

Another hater. A misguided and poor attempt at being "body positive" which they'd have achieved much more effectively by doing a "normal" advert just with models of all different sizes and shapes - they could even have included a disabled model.

NoYo · 29/05/2019 05:43

It's the out of tune singing which annoys me most.
"it's just a load of chat" Seriously?!

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/05/2019 05:58

Also they are two very toned, good looking, proportionate, big chested women - they still look like models

^^ This. When they portray 'normal' women like this, they still always have a fairly flat and toned stomach and thighs, which many women don't.

It's like all the furniture adverts where the couples are always different races. It's obvious they're falling over themselves to be inclusive, but the couples featured are still always attractive, slim and able bodied, so unrepresentative of the population at large.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 29/05/2019 06:16

I like it. And the women are not slim or small, they are average. Which is just the point. Promoting body positivity at the healthy weight.

HollySniffs · 29/05/2019 07:10

I don't like it either.

Pigeon-holing women into the slimmer bitchy ones (of course) and the fun "bubbly" larger ones (natch). And never the twain shall meet apparently.

Cringy lazy stereotyping.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 29/05/2019 07:14

I think they are average sized women so in that regard they do represent many women. Also, for those saying they're not plus size, doesn't plus size (in the modelling world)start at size12? I could be wrong.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 29/05/2019 07:35

On top of all pp comments, I really hate the naff shoehorning of the Boots logo in.

I mean, we get it, it's Boots. We can see that - from both the reveal at the end and general tone of the advert, and products shown etc. You don't need to force the icon in where it looks so contrived.

ssd · 29/05/2019 08:23

It's like it was thought up on a room full of men going 'we'll make an advert to show non skinny women can still have fun at the beach but we'll show anorher women, slim and distainful, looking at them as she's jealous / snooty/ whatever

Wouldn't it have beb better if the slimmer women by herself hi fived them walking to the see, or even joined in?
It's like we'll make an advert for normal women but we'll still include them being bitchy to each other

OP posts:
Grandadwasthatyou · 29/05/2019 08:30

Apart from anything else the singer is terrible.

Sunshineandshowers81 · 29/05/2019 08:33

I hate it. Pitting women against each other. Reminds me of things like 'real women have curves' which is just a way to put down slim women.

Hoppinggreen · 29/05/2019 08:34

It’s awful, from the “skinny bitch” to the “ look these perfectly normal women are being brave enough to wear bikinis “ and the stupid dancing on the sea.
Whole thing is bloody insulting

SolitudeAtAltitude · 29/05/2019 08:34

I did not see bitchiness?

ArgyMargy · 29/05/2019 08:35

It's not great. The women have put on sarongs which they then throw off to show how empowered they are, even though they had already decided not to be pressured into having the right "beach body" before getting on the plane.

Agree that having a slim woman looking enviously at jolly overweight women is not helping anyone.

ssd · 29/05/2019 08:37

Solicitude, it's the look the slimmer women by herself gives to the two main women as they walk past her, it's just unnecessary.
